    Prediction of the peak discharges is of great significance for water resource management and flood mitigation strategies. In this study, the performance of the deseasonalised ARIMA modelling technique was tested to evaluate its suitability for streamflow prediction in flood-prone Kashmir Valley. Monthly peak flow modelling and forecast was performed for the following three key discharge stations of the River Jhelum: Sangam, Ram Munshi Bagh, and Asham. Based on the results, the models were found to perform reasonably well for simulation and forecasting of the monthly peak flows. The values of root mean square error (RMSE) were 75.19, 85.51, and 92.15 cumecs, and MAPE values were 31.94, 29.81, and 32.96% for Sangam, Ram Munshi Bagh, and Asham stations. Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values for these stations were 0.89, 0.85, and 0.86. The results showed that the models could recognise the patterns in the observed time series and recognise the basic relations. The models will contribute towards designing an efficient decision support tool for flood planning and management in the flood-prone valley.

    Water distribution networks are crucial for supplying consumers with quality and adequate water. A water distribution system comprises connected hydraulic components which ensure water supply and distribution to meet demand. Optimization of water distribution networks is carried out to minimize resource utilization and expenditure or maximize the system’s efficiency and higher benefits. Genetic algorithms signify an effective search technique for non-linear optimization problems and have gained acceptance among water resources planners and managers. This paper reviews various developments in the optimization of water distribution systems using the technique of genetic algorithms. These developments are pertinent to creating novel systems for distributing water and the expansion, reinforcement, and rehabilitation process for prevailing water supply mechanisms.     Climate change has emerged as a challenging issue in the recent years. Climate change has affected nearly all aspects of human life and its impacts are projected to increase in the future. It has caused a very perceptible impact on all natural systems, including the water cycle. Climate change has brought about an intensification of the water cycle and increased the frequency of hydrological extremes like floods and droughts. Drought is one of the main natural disasters that puts the livelihoods and socioeconomic development of people and communities in jeopardy. The intensity and severity of droughts has increased due to climate change and the effects are projected to exacerbate in the future posing a threat to global water resources. Under conditions of global warming, the water demands of different sectors will increase, putting stress on already limited water resources. In this chapter the impact of climate change on the water cycle, droughts, and finally availability of water resources have been discussed. It can be stated that under the scenario of climate change and global warming, extreme hydrological events are likely to increase in the future. These will intensify droughts, which would in turn severely impact the availability of water resources. Effective management practices are therefore required for mitigating the effects of climate change and droughts in order to ensure sustainability of water resources.

    Floods are the most recurrent of all natural disasters in Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir, India, affecting both society and economy. Despite various efforts to prevent loss of lives and assets during floods, a crucial component of flood management, i.e. how the inhabitants perceive flood risk, is not well-known in the region. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in flood-prone regions of the Valley to gain information on how public understands the risk of flooding in their area, their flood preparedness, knowledge about floods and the trust in various institutions for managing floods and disseminating flood warnings. Respondent demographics was then linked with their answers to establish potential correlations. Responses illustrate that the respondents consider floods as the most important natural disaster in the Valley and most of them mention that the risk is increasing. Results show that the respondents have average knowledge regarding floods, flood protection measures and emergency actions in case of floods. At the individual level, they had not taken adequate steps for safeguarding themselves or their families against floods. The characteristics of respondents namely age, gender, income, education level and previous experience with floods showed statistically significant correlations with the responses. In general, the findings of the study call for better education of the inhabitants regarding flood risks and management actions as well as improvement of existing methods of flood forecasting and warning in the region.
