    Este estudio tiene como objetivo principal evaluar el alcance del mal olor procedente del relleno sanitario El Verde (León, Guanajuato, México) en sus alrededores, así como estimar el potencial de molestia derivado de la exposición a dicho olor. Para ello, se emplea una metodología basada en la combinación de tres dimensiones básicas del olor: intensidad, duración y frecuencia, que se integran en dos índices. El primero, de “consistencia”, confronta la intensidad y la duración; el segundo, de “molestia”, pondera al anterior mediante la frecuencia. La principal fuente de información fue una encuesta directa a la población, cuyos datos se integraron en un sistema de información geográfica (SIG). Los resultados, representados cartográficamente, muestran que el mal olor se percibe incluso a una distancia aproximada de 7 km. Asimismo, se advierte una notable desigualdad en la distribución del indicador de molestia, con un mayor impacto en el área urbana de León, ubicada al este del relleno sanitario. Posteriormente, se analizan las posibles causas de este resultado, considerando tanto factores físicos como humanos. Los hallazgos resaltan la necesidad de coordinar acciones entre diferentes áreas administrativas para abordar de manera más efectiva el impacto del mal olor asociado a esta instalación.
  • Traditional Agrarian Landscapes and Climate Resilience in the Rural–Urban Transition Between the Sierra de las Nieves and the Western Costa del Sol (Andalusia, Spain)

    The study examines the recent transformation of traditional agricultural landscapes in the transition zone between Sierra de las Nieves and the Western Costa del Sol (Andalusia, Spain), one of the European regions where urban development pressure has reached its peak in replacing agricultural land with residential and tourism uses. Through a diachronic analysis of historical orthophotos (1956–2025), statistical sources (Agricultural Census, SIGPAC), and fieldwork, land-use changes and their impact on ecological functionality and territorial resilience are quantified. Results reveal a widespread loss of agricultural land—exceeding 68% overall—particularly severe in Benahavís, where more than 70% of farmland has disappeared, largely converted to urban areas. In contrast, in Istán and Ojén, the predominant trend is the renaturalization of abandoned agricultural land. These dynamics illustrate a coastal–inland territorial model that epitomizes the Mediterranean “territorial consumption” process, in which tourism-driven urbanization fragments traditional agroforestry mosaics. The study concludes that, despite their regression, traditional agricultural landscapes continue to play a key role in water regulation, soil conservation, and wildfire risk mitigation. Their restoration and maintenance are proposed as a replicable strategy for climate change adaptation and for reconciling territorial sustainability with economic development in other Mediterranean regions under intense urban pressure.
  • Perception of forest fire risk and its impact on housing valuation: the transition between the Sierra de las Nieves and the Costa del Sol (Málaga, Spain)

    En el contexto del cambio climático global, la virulencia de los incendios forestales se prevé cada vez mayor en base a las proyecciones estimadas de calentamiento global en el arco mediterráneo. En este contexto, se plantea un análisis de la percepción de los riesgos naturales, prestando especial atención a los incendios forestales y a cómo su efecto en el paisaje puede afectar a la satisfacción con la vivienda o a la elección de un bien inmueble. La metodología plantea un análisis cualitativo, a través de encuestas, para conocer la percepción del riesgo de incendio forestal de los residentes en los municipios de Benahavís, Istán y Ojén, situados en la transición entre la Costa del Sol Occidental y la Sierra de las Nieves, en la provincia de Málaga. Se concluye que la percepción del riesgo es generalmente elevada y creciente, aunque su influencia resulta ser de menor grado a la de considerar el entorno natural como amenidad medioambiental. Los incendios y su impacto en el paisaje tienen un efecto negativo en la valoración del lugar de residencia, pero esa consecuencia desfavorable se reduce cuando el paisaje se recupera, aunque se perciba un elevado riesgo de un nuevo episodio.
  • Reddit Place: A window into understanding nationalist perspectives in the 21st century

    En la primavera de 2022 tuvo lugar la segunda edición de un evento internacional colaborativo en línea de Pixel Art, Reddit Place, dentro de la red social Reddit. Durante los cuatro días de actividad se representaron numerosas manifestaciones nacionalistas de distinta índole y escala, que se ofrecieron como un interesante laboratorio de exploración de este concepto identitario en el siglo XXI. La metodología utilizada en el estudio ha consistido en la digitalización de la imagen resultante y en la clasificación de las expresiones patrióticas que aparecen en ella, considerando la escala territorial, la inclusión de memes y las relaciones internacionales que se expresan, para su posterior cuantificación. Los resultados no se pueden tomar como plenamente representativos del Zeitgeist mundial, pero ofrecen una ventana para la reflexión y el planteamiento de hipótesis en torno al papel del nacionalismo en el siglo XXI y la evolución de los símbolos en los que se apoya.
  • Mapping Tools for Flood Risk Rescue and Assistance Management

    The assessment of vulnerability to the danger of flooding, with a focus on the need for rescue and assistance from the population, is still in an exploratory scientific phase. The main objective of this research is to propose a methodology based on the issues of rescue and assistance in the face of the risk of floods and to provide a tool for its management. A series of maps is presented, indicating those territorial elements that require rescue and surveillance in a prioritized manner in a visual and accessible way for public administration. Four methodological cartographic proposals have been designed as follows: (1) a map of territory sectors with special rescue needs (dependent population and/or buildings without shelter); a map of the impact on transportation infrastructure and vulnerable areas of buildings (2); a map of vulnerability to possible disorder and looting caused by flooding events (3); and a map of the increase in the cost of deployment for rescue and assistance systems (4). As an experimental zone to test the effectiveness of these proposals, a peri-urban area of the municipality of Málaga (Spain) is chosen, which has an extensive history of severe floods. The results confirm the applied and preventive nature of the tool, which can be incorporated into flood risk management plans and local flood risk action plans developed by public administrations. The main finding of the research is the technical advancement that comes with a precise understanding of vulnerability and its resulting issues for better flood risk management.
  • Landscape Value in the Spanish Costa del Sol’s Real Estate Market: The Case of Marbella

    Housing prices are influenced by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. This study aims to highlight the economic impact of the perceived landscape on single-family houses prices in a Spanish Mediterranean urban area (Marbella). Considering the landscape an important added value in real estate markets, this study also explores the landscape elements that contribute the most to the value of housing. A particularly positive influence of mixed views (urban elements and Mediterranean scrub) and sea views is detected in the analysis. Sea views are highly requested in the local housing market, but due to the graded topographical layout of Marbella, it is not very difficult to have sea views for houses. The low importance of views on natural land areas is worth noting when one of the attractions of this municipality is that of a highly valued Mediterranean natural environment. Views on the old town centre are somewhere in between: although the old town centre is highly regarded, with a generally good state of preservation, the sampled properties have poorer quality perspectives, with reduced visual basins and views centred on the foreground, usually the houses opposite.
  • Mapping method for the integrated analysis of gentrification and touristification: the case of Málaga (Spain)

    Since the 1960s, the productive model of Málaga has been pointed toward tourism. The redevelopment of the historic centre of the city and the increasing specialization of some areas in services linked to tourism have created several negative consequences on the habitability and the identity of those areas. This work aims at developing a methodology that allows measuring, individually, the spatial influence and intensity of gentrification and touristification. The final goal is join together both urban processes in a map, also including the evolution of their variables over time. The method allows delimiting areas where both processes overlap. The results show a strong gentrification and touristification in the historic centre of Málaga, also observed along the main road axis and the coastline. In addition, touristification is higher in the areas adjacent to the historic centre whereas gentrification is observed in squares with special architectural characteristics.

  • Mapping the Risk of COVID-19 Contagion at Urban Scale

    From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, several methods have been developed to assess the risk of COVID-19 transmission using spatial units of analysis based on administrative limits (e.g., neighborhoods, census sections, and districts). The main objective of this study is to create a method to assess the risk of contagion within an interurban scale, considering buildings as the smallest unit of analysis. The general risk equation has been the basis to develop the method, individually assessing its components (i.e., hazard, vulnerability, and exposure). Several mapping tools that address the management of the risk of contagion have been proposed, and the main result was the detection of a pattern of contagion and the identification of areas where the risk of contagion was greater. Additionally, the comparison of the risk of a contagion pattern and the population size at an intraurban scale allowed for inferring the specific vulnerability of the population to contagion. The results also showed that there was a direct relation between the risk of contagion and population density, as well as the presence of areas especially vulnerable to contagion.
