Mental health laws in Africa: Perspectives from Cabo Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria Deborah Oyine Aluh, Wisdom Joe Igbokwe, Emmanuel Nii-Boye Quarshie, Ana Moniz, Berrick Otieno, et al. Cambridge Prisms Global Mental Health, 2026 Mental health legislation across Africa has evolved significantly from colonial-era frameworks. An adapted version of the FOSTREN* (Fostering and Strengthening Approaches to Reducing Coercion in European Mental Health Services) instrument, which is a comprehensive assessment tool based on the World Health Organisation Mental Health Legislation Checklist and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, was used to analyse mental health laws from Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Cabo Verde and Kenya. The comparative analysis showed varying alignment with international human rights standards, reflecting complex interactions between global frameworks and local realities. All the mental health laws analysed show movement towards rights-based approaches, although implementation challenges related to resource constraints, service delivery capacity and cultural integration remain significant barriers. Ghana’s formal integration of complementary and alternative medicine into its mental health framework, which requires cooperation between the Mental Health Authority and Traditional and Alternative Medicine Council, and the inclusion of people with lived experience of mental health conditions in review panels are examples of innovative approaches that show promise for regional adoption. While some form of supported decision-making is available, none of the countries offer advanced care directives. The study highlights that legislative reform alone is insufficient without addressing contextual factors like poverty, healthcare financing and integration of traditional healing practices in developing rights-based mental health care systems.
Women psychiatrists in Iraq: breaking barriers in career development Noor Ali Hasan, Maha Sulaiman Younis, AbdulRahman A. Saied Middle East Current Psychiatry, 2025 Iraqi psychiatrists pioneered the commencement of mental health services eight decades ago and became the cornerstone of its development over the years despite the profound challenges of wars, conflicts, shortages of resources, and social stigma towards psychiatry in general. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the contributions that women make to mental health services, even though they are underrepresented in positions of leadership in psychiatry. We conducted a comprehensive review of existing literature and the archives of educational psychiatric institutes, personal communication with the psychiatrists in charge, and scrutinized the search engines for the latest data. Pathways to academia were identified as limited by financial support, engagement and coordination between academia and clinical services, and flexible working. The total number of psychiatrists has increased recently, with the remarkable contribution of younger women psychiatrists who provide psychiatric care and aspire to better professional productivity. Iraq can create a more effective and inclusive mental health treatment system by tackling structural, budgetary, and cultural obstacles. The contribution of female psychiatrists must be recognized and supported as the need for mental health services becomes increasingly critical.
The impact of the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquakes on the mental health of children Sirwan Khalid Ahmed, AbdulRahman A Saied, Abdulqadir J Nashwan International Journal of Social Psychiatry, 2025 The seismic events that struck southern Turkey and Syria in February 2023, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6 respectively, have significantly impacted the well-being of millions, particularly children and adolescents. This correspondence highlights the psychological repercussions faced by minors in the aftermath of the earthquakes, including anxiety, PTSD, and depression. Despite efforts to provide humanitarian aid, there remains a critical gap in addressing the psychosocial needs of affected children. With limited mental health resources in both countries, innovative approaches such as Psychological First Aid (PFA) interventions and telepsychiatry are advocated for efficient and scalable support. Additionally, safeguarding children from abuse and ensuring access to education and stable environments are paramount in post-disaster recovery efforts. This correspondence underscores the urgency for a holistic response to mitigate the long-term impact of seismic events on the vulnerable population in Turkey and Syria.
