Introduction: The aim of the study was to analyze the changes in the indices of the autonomic nervous system and the adaptive capacity of Ukrainian Super League handball players prior to significant competitions. Material and methods: This research involved 39 handball players from the Ukrainian Super League aged 18–22 years old. The study examined the overall tone of the autonomic nervous system (ANS ) measuring electrodermal activity of the athletes. Reactivity of the ANS of players was monitored by the method of R. Baevskyy, the efficiency of competitive activity in handball was analyzed by the integral index of technical and tactical handball skills. Results: Before the competition, the reaction in the sympathoadrenal system was launched for vagotonics as the intended response to the upcoming games. The measured indicators marked mental stress and activation of the sympathoadrenal system for the sympathotonics group. The аtonics group provided the emotional ground due to the balanced influence of paraand sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Conclusions: The index of functional changes in all participants detected a satisfactory level of adaptation. The highest sympathetic activity was observed for аtonics, the lowest – for vagotonics. The best results were documented for athletes who did not have autonomic dysfunction and those who had a slight predominance of the sympathetic component of the autonomic regulation.

    Informa UK Limited
ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an individualized physical rehabilitation programs aimed at improving respiratory function in women with post-mastectomy syndrome. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial 50 women with post-mastectomy syndrome were enrolled in the experimental group (EG, n = 25) or the comparison group (CG, n = 25). The program for the EG included: aqua aerobics (i.e. aqua jogging, aqua building, and aqua stretching); conditional swimming; and recreational aerobics. The program for the CG included: conditional swimming and Pilates exercises. Both intervention groups attended individualized physical rehabilitation programs three times per week for 48 weeks. The primary outcome measure was spirometry of the patients measured before, 6 and 12 months after the intervention. Results: This study demonstrated that most of the respiratory function parameters increased significantly in both groups over the year of exercise training. After the year of training the individualized physical rehabilitation program for the EG was significantly better (p < 0.01) as compared with the CG, except for inspiratory reserve volume and maximal voluntary ventilation, which were not statistically different. Conclusions: The results of the study suggest that individual programs of physical rehabilitation could be considered effective for the improvement of respiratory function of the patients with post-mastectomy syndrome. The results obtained could serve as a basis for more widespread clinical program development.

Introduction. The aim of the study was to compare the effectiveness of two individualized physical interventions on the upper limb condition after radical mastectomy. Methods. overall, 68 patients after breast cancer surgery participated in 12-week outpatient rehabilitation. They were randomly enrolled for water individualized physical intervention (water exercise group, n = 34) and Pilates physical intervention (Pilates group, n = 34). Upper limb force (dynamometry), size of upper limb lymphedema (circumference), and active range of motion (goniometry) on the affected side were determined before and after 36 individualized physical rehabilitation sessions. Results. After 12-week physical rehabilitation, the average values of active range of flexion and abduction were statistically significantly higher in the water exercise group compared with the Pilates group by 8.73 degrees (p < 0.01) and 6.87 degrees (p < 0.01), respectively. The size of lymphedema in the area of forearm and hand was significantly lower in the water exercise group compared with the Pilates group by 0.46 cm (p < 0.05) and 0.44 cm (p < 0.05), respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in upper limb force between the studied groups at the end of the 12-week intervention. Conclusions. The results have confirmed that elaborated individualized physical interventions might be considered as effective methods for range of motion improvement and decrease in breast cancer-related lymphedema in patients with post-mastectomy syndrome. The 3-month water exercises were more effective in improving mobility and muscle force of the upper limb and decreasing lymphedema than Pilates exercises.

BACKGROUND the problem of rehabilitation and improvement of the life quality of women with the postmastectomy syndrome holds an important place in the modern concept of the treatment of breast cancer. AIM The objective of the present study was to determine the purposefulness of the early application of the available means and methods of physical rehabilitation for the improvement of the life quality in the women presenting with postmastectomy syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 135 women with the postmastectomy syndrome who had undergone radical mastectomy as described by Madden followed by postoperative radiotherapy. Fifty women were examined and treated as in-patients whereas the remaining 85 ones were out-patients under regular medical check-up The average age of the treated patients was 60.27±0.79 years. The in-patients were randomly subdivided into two groups: the main one (n=25) and the group of comparison (n=25). At the stage of dispensary observations, the women were also allocated to two groups: the first (n=45) and the second main groups (n=40), depending on the choice of the personality-oriented program for physical rehabilitation. The analysis of the quality of life was carried out in the beginning of the out-patient rehabilitation treatment, then within 6 and 12 months after its initiation making use of the standardized Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT-B + 4) questionnaire. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The benefits of the early physical rehabilitation of the in-patients first became apparent within six months after the onset of training as follows from the significantly better performance of the physical, social, emotional functions estimated taking into consideration the subscales of breast cancer and hand disorders in the women comprising the main group of the patients in comparison with those in the first and second main groups: the difference amounted to 2.34 (p<0.05), 1,88 (р<0.01), 2,52 (р<0.001), 3,52 (р<0.001) and 4,09 (р<0.001) points respectively. In a year, only the improvement of the social and emotional state persisted. CONCLUSION The proposed personality-oriented program of physical rehabilitation can be used in the clinical practice of the relevant specialized departments for the improvement of the quality of life of the women presenting with postmastectomy syndrome.

Introduction: Surgical treatment and radiotherapy can prolong the life expectancy of women with breast cancer but also might have side effects on heart rate variability. Currently breast cancer treatment has contributed to significant improvements in survival rate, but negative effects on the psycho-emotional state and functionality of the autonomic nervous system of these interventions in women is high. We aimed to investigate the heart rate variability features in breast cancer survivors who have varied attitudes towards the disease. Material and methods: Heart rate variability analysis, determination of various attitudes towards the disease, and mathematical statistical methods. The survey of 110 breast cancer survivors was conducted utilizing Type of Attitude Toward The Disease questionnaire. The women were executed radical mastectomy and adjuvant radiation treatment for breast cancer. Patients aged between 56 and 60 years. Results: The results of our study showed that patients with a rational type of attitude towards disease had statistically (p<0.05) better parameters of heart rate variability. Values of standard deviation of the N-N interval, root mean square of successive differences, total power, high-frequency range, and stress index were much better in patients with rational type of attitude as compared with the women who had intrapsychic and interpsychic attitudes. Conclusions: These data show that identified features of various attitudes towards the disease in breast cancer survivors clarify the necessity for particular attention to their heart rate variability parameters. heart rate, attitude, woman, breast cancer, mastectomy Features of heart rate variability in breast cancer survivors with various types of attitude to the disease Cechy zmienności rytmu zatokowego u osób po nowotworze piersi z różnym nastawieniem do choroby Evgen Prystupa 1 A,B, Tetiana Odynets 2* C,D, Yuriy Briskin 2 E, Iryna Svistelnyk 3 F 1 Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Culture, Lviv State University
