• Climate-Resilient Traditional Architecture: A Case of Dharamshala, India

Journal of Architectural Planning Research and Studies, 2025
The settlement typology of any region is determined by various climatic, cultural, and topographical dynamics. In mountainous regions, rapid and unregulated urban development often results in the emergence of an organic urban fabric that fails to meet the environmental needs of the area.It is important to thoroughly examine and analyse the traditional wisdom and techniques employed in designing buildings and settlements in mountainous regions. This study focuses on the exploration and understanding of traditional architecture in the hills of Dharamshala, India having composite climatic conditions. It aims at studying the role of traditional buildings, which are made of stone and mud having sloping roofs with bamboo and natural stone slates, in the context of resilience in disaster prone areas. The scope of this research is to establish the effectiveness of traditional building materials in maintaining the indoor comfort temperature in this region. A descriptive-interpretative approach was utilized to comprehensively understand and document the traditional designs and methods. Results show that half of the housing stock is still vernacular in form and traditional houses have 3℃-4℃ lower indoor temperatures in the hot season as compared to outdoor temperatures due to passive construction styles.

• A review of influential factors for core city area development processes
Akansha Soni, Puneet Sharma
Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal, 2024
Old urban settlements showcase a distinct cultural and social image in their core areas. These core areas have played a vital role in the city development process for centuries. With rapid urbanisation the core areas of these cities are losing their identity and importance. Their economic viability and sociocultural significance are diminishing gradually. Various revival and renewal projects have been undertaken to bring back the lost social and visual character of these areas. This paper presents a critical review of core city area development processes implemented in the last decade, 2011–20. The paper identifies a number of factors that have influenced the development strategies of core city areas. The results of this review are represented using a comprehensive matrix. The major factors that are considered are the social, economic, environmental, cultural and heritage, governance, built environment and accessibility aspects of the development strategies. The social and built environment aspects were found to be the most important factors to take into consideration when undertaking core area development processes in cities.

• Analysis of urban intervention processes carried out in core areas of Indian cities

Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal, 2023
Core city areas have a distinct character and are culturally vibrant. The impact of rapid urbanisation on the core area has resulted in its decay. It is easily visible in the quality of life of people residing in these areas. Henceforth, there is a need to overcome this imbalance generated over time. This study aims to identify and analyse the various urban intervention processes implemented in core areas. The paper is divided into three sections. The first section broadly discusses the theoretical understanding of various urban intervention processes and their major governing factors. The second section gives a brief view of urban intervention policies introduced in India, and the last section is an overview of various urban intervention projects studied as case examples for formulating the future parameters.
• Reclaiming and Rejuvenating Urban Water Bodies: Case of Mullassery Canal, Kochi, Kerala

Infrastructure Development Theory Practice and Policy Sustainability and Resilience 2021 Conference Compendium, 2022
Water bodies play an important role in shaping the environmental, social and economic aspects of communities in an urban setting. Recent rapid urbanization and population growth has resulted in enormous degradation of such natural resources. Unchecked encroachment and pollution are continuously threatening the ecosystem services provided by these water bodies. Mullassery Canal, a tidal canal that flows through the city of Kochi in Kerala, India is one such example. This paper attempts to establish a framework for rejuvenation of urban water bodies for sustainable city development. First section of the paper explores various methods employed for improving deteriorated water bodies through various case examples. The second section lists out factors instrumental in restoration of the canal and prioritizes the first course of action through AHP. Subsequently, the evaluation and identification of the most vulnerable segment of the canal is performed through field study, interviews and visual analysis so as to begin the restoration process with that segment. The last section illustrates the reclamation and rejuvenation process through daylighting/de-culverting and the design interventions involving Low Impact Development (LID). The results indicate the suitability of employing daylighting process in addressing the most pressing concerns regarding the restoration of the canal. The proposed interventions are also instrumental in enhancing the environmental, social and economic qualities of the area.
• Tira Sujanpur: An Adobe of Katoch Dynasty
Venu Shree, Puneet Sharma
Journal of the Institution of Engineers India Series A, 2015
Image of any ancient settlement can be interpreted through a continuous study of its Historical and Architectural developments. The best way to map this image is to analyze and explore old monuments, palaces and religious places of that city. This work is an attempt to showcase the glorious era of Art and Architecture which flourished during Katoch dynasty in north Himalayan region of India during 18th century. • New urbanism- an approach towards developing Indian contemporary cities
Sandeep Sharma, Puneet Sharma
Large Structures and Infrastructures for Environmentally Constrained and Urbanised Areas, 2010

This paper is an attempt to analyse and place the concept of new urbanism in context of India. There is great need of concept new urbanism for revival of our lost art of ‘place-making’ and also for re-ordering of the built environment in the present context of fast urban growth. In the first half, thrust is on understanding of the principles and ideas of new urbanism. Second half studies how these ideas have been implemented by briefly illustrated few case studies in the paper. In the later half research focuses where & how this new approach can be fitted in cites of Indian subcontinent. As per the existing social, economical & religious factors few questions comes in the mind which actually sets the foundation for the further studies.
