Life Cycle Assessment of Biofuel Production from Sugarcane Bagasse Nurul Farhana Nasri, Marlia Mohd Hanafiah, Siti Norliyana Harun, Jing Wen Chong, Faez M. Hassan E3s Web of Conferences, 2025 Fossil fuels dominate global energy supply, accounting for over 80% of total consumption. Biofuels derived from renewable resources emerge as a promising alternative to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study evaluated the environmental impact and hotspots of biofuel production from sugarcane bagasse using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The LCA was performed using SimaPro version 9.0 software, utilizing the ReCiPe 2016 methodology in a ’cradle-to-gate’ framework. The functional unit in this study was 252 kg of bioethanol produced from 1 ton of sugarcane bagasse. The findings revealed that biofuel production from sugarcane significantly impacts terrestrial ecotoxicity (10.44 kg 1,4-DCB), human non-carcinogenic toxicity (2.61 kg 1,4-DCB), and global warming (2.60 kg CO2 eq). The characterization factors for human health damage, ecosystem damage, and resource depletion were 3.68E-04 DALY, 3.04E-05 species.year, and 6.91E06 USD2013, respectively. These results offered valuable insights into the environmental footprint of biofuel production from sugarcane bagasse, providing essential information for policymakers and industry stakeholders to develop more sustainable energy strategies in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mapping heavy metal contamination in soils around Ikpeshi marble mining sites in Southern Nigeria using the regression kriging spatial prediction approach Sule Tunde Usman Nurudeena, Marlia Mohd Hanafiah, Amadi Akobundu Nwanosike, Faez M. Hassan, Rab Nawaz, et al. Soil and Environment, 2025 Determining the geospatial distribution and level of heavy metals (HMs) pollution in the soil is crucial for the management and restoration of heavy metal-polluted soils around mining sites. This study analyzed the content of heavy metals (HMs) such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) in soils around the Ikpeshi marble mining sites in Southern Nigeria. The degree of contamination and several pollution indices, including enrichment, contamination, and geo-accumulation index, were calculated to assess the soil contamination level around the marble-mining sites. Average concentrations of As, Cd, and Cu exceeded Clarke’s and crustal values, indicating significant contamination near mining sites. Cd ranged from 0.01–12.8 mg kg⁻¹ (mean 4.7 mg kg⁻¹), and Cu from 0.09–84.6 mg kg⁻¹ (mean 31.0 mg kg⁻¹). Metal concentrations decreased with distance from mining activities, confirming their anthropogenic origin. Overall, soils were highly to extremely contaminated with Cd, highly contaminated with Cu and As, moderately contaminated with Pb and Zn, and uncontaminated with Fe, Ni, and Mn. Contamination ranked as Cd > Cu > As > Pb > Zn > Fe > Ni > Mn. This study offers a strong scientific foundation for the clean-up and management of heavy metal-contaminated soils in marble mining regions of Nigeria.
SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF Al-DOPED ZnO THIN FILMS AS ANTI-REFLECTION COATINGS FOR SOLAR CELL APPLICATIONS H. I. ABDULGAFOUR, FATEN SH. ZAINULABDEEN, GHADA S. KARAM, HAYIM CH. MAGID, AUS A. NAJIM, et al. Surface Review and Letters, 2024 In this work, we have synthesized ZnO:Al thin films by pulsed laser deposition technique and investigated their microstructural and optical properties. The XRD study confirmed a polycrystalline structure of wurtzite ZnO in all films. Further, Al doping has improved the crystallinity and decreased the crystal size and volume of the unit cell. The surface morphology was homogeneous with nanoscopic crystals clustered to form granular nanoparticles. The optical properties significantly improved by increasing the Al doping concentration. The produced thin films are excellent candidates for use as an anti-reflection layer in solar cells due to their outstanding properties.
Characteristics of consumer towards development of sustainable e-waste management in Malaysia D D Sofian, M M Hanafiah, K S Woon, F M Hassan Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2023 The problem of rising electronic waste or known as e-waste generation has not only been faced worldwide, but has also had a significant impact on Malaysia, since it has become a serious environmental concern and contribute to the effect on human health, especially in major urban area. Many initiatives have been done to address the concern of improper e-waste management. Thus, this study intends to determine household characteristics of consumer behaviour toward managing e-waste in an environmentally sound manner as a first step in alleviating the problem. Putrajaya a government administrative centre, was chosen as the case study to represent Malaysia’s paradigm of sustainable urban cities. A constructive questionnaire was distributed to 50 Putrajaya households using random sampling, and the data was analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 28 and Microsoft Excel. It was discovered that >40% of respondents have good understanding about e-waste management based on their levels of awareness, knowledge, and perception that have significant influence on attitudes toward e-waste management. Furthermore, views regarding e-waste management on impact of recycling behaviour were also determined. On the other hand, the consumers demonstrate a good attribute (80%) in terms of their willingness to make changes toward a sustainable e-waste management. This study provides important information to policymakers, allowing them to take the required steps to increase recycling among Putrajaya homes while also considerably improving e-waste management.
Incorporation of Digital Elevation Model, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and Landsat-8 Data for Land Use Land Cover Mapping Jwan Al-Doski, Faez M. Hassan, Hussein Abdelwahab Mossa, Aus A. Najim Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, 2022 Ancillary data are crucial in land use land cover (LULC) mapping process. This study goal is to investigate if adding Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and digital elevation model (DEM) data as ancillary data to the Landsat-8 spectral imagery (acquired on 14 April 2016) in the support vector machine (SVM ) classification process improves LULC mapping accuracy in GuaMusang, Malaysia. ENVI software was used to preprocess a single Landsat-8 image, convert it to reflectance, and calculate NDVI. ASTER-GDEM data were used to generate the DEM. The logical channel method was used to combine NDVI and DEM with Landsat-8 bands and limit the impact of shadows during SVM classification. The SVM accuracy was tested and evaluated on ancillary data and Landsat-8 spectral-based collection. The results revealed that the user's accuracy and producer's accuracy improved by 15.1% and 2.1%, for primary forest and by 17.93% and 28.86% for secondary forest, respectively. The classification reliability of the majority of LULC categories has increased significantly. Compared to SVM spectral-based set, the overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of the SVM ancillary-based set improved by 8.77% and 0.12, respectively. In conclusion, this article demonstrated that integrating DEM and NDVI data improves Landsat-8 image classification precision.
