  • Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices and Education Needs of Dentists on Domestic Violence: A Systematic Review
Sthefanie del Carmen Perez Puello, Vitor Rafael Gomes, Brunna Verna Castro Gondinho, Júlia Vitório Octaviani, Eva Zafra Aparici, et al.
Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice, 2026
The objective of the present systematic review was to evaluate the scientific evidence on the knowledge, attitudes, practices level (KAP) and education needs among dentists in the identification of clinical signs and notification of domestic violence (DV). Electronic searches were performed in PubMed/Medline, ScienceDirect, EBSCOHost, Scopus databases, and grey literature using the keywords ‘Domestic Violence’, ‘Abused Women’, ‘Dentistry’, ‘Oral health’, ‘Women's Health Services’ and ‘Health Knowledge, Attitudes, Practice’. Cross‐sectional or longitudinal studies, without restriction on publication year, published in English, using calibrated or validated questionnaires to assess the dentist KAP level and education needs for identification of clinical signs and notification of DV were considered. The Ottawa Scale was applied to assess the risk of bias. In the final analysis, 5 studies were included, conducted in the United States, France, Brazil and Pakistan. The total sample was 1735 general and specialist dentists. All studies showed that the participants had a low level of CAP in identifying clinical signs and reporting DV. In addition, 27% reported having identified at least one case in clinical practice. Most of participants stated that they had not received training on care for victims of DV. The studies had a low risk of bias. Scientific evidence suggests that dentists have a low level of KAP in the identification of clinical signs and notification of DV and have a high need for education in this area.
  • Qualitative study on experiences reported by people with complex wounds in Primary Health Care
Dalila Reis Barbosa, Caio Vieira de Barros Arato, Rodrigo Almeida Bastos, Norma Sueli Gonçalves Reche, Michelli Caroliny de Oliveira, et al.
    Revista Brasileira De Enfermagem, 2026
Objectives: to explore expressed and unexpressed senses and meanings that may reveal subjective elements necessary for patients’ emotional management. Methods a clinical-qualitative approach was used within the Brazilian Health System with individuals who have had chronic wounds for more than six months. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews, audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim using a semi-structured script. The sample was calculated based on theoretical saturation. The corpus was analyzed using the “Seven Steps” technique, and the theoretical framework supporting the analysis and discussion was health psychology. Results eight interviews were conducted with patients treated at Family Health Units. The meanings and significances characterized three categories: distress beyond physical pain; communication between patient and professional; and religiosity as a coping strategy. Final Considerations living with difficult-to-heal wounds compromises adherence to treatment and self-care.
  • Challenges and perceptions of dental undergraduate students regarding active learning in clinical practice: A qualitative study
Maria de Lara Araújo Rodrigues, Bruna Navarro Camargo da Silva, Marcella Alves dos Anjos, Eduarda Betiati Menegazzo, Álex Moreira Herval, et al.
    Plos One, 2025
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the challenges faced by dental students during clinical practice and to understand their perceptions of how active learning methodologies contribute to fostering critical and reflective participation in problem-solving throughout the teaching-learning process. Methods This qualitative study applied the action research method in a descriptive and interpretive manner, implementing active learning methodologies in the adolescent clinic of the Federal University of Uberlândia (Brazil). This clinic is among the fundamental elements in the Public Health System. This research included 33 students in the final term of the dentistry course (10th term), divided into three groups of 9–13 students each, and regularly enrolled in clinic practice. The data was collected in three 90-minute workshops with each group. This study used Minayo’s methodological framework and the arc method by Spanish educator Charles Maguerez to conduct the action research. This research comprised five steps: 1. Clinical experience; 2. Identification of challenges; 3. Theorization of challenges based on scientific evidence; 4. Development of action strategies; 5. Application of strategies in clinical practice. The theoretical framework was Paulo Freire’s problematization methodology. Data analysis followed the thematic content analysis technique. Results After comprehensive data analysis, the main challenges concerned the work process, productivity, and infrastructure. The formulated strategies included the establishment of a procedures table, implementation of minimum age regulations for companions in the waiting area, adjustment of clinic hours, enhancement of auxiliary professional training, and maintenance of dental equipment. Conclusion The groups’ experience with active methods qualified them to identify and address relevant practice challenges. It allowed study participants to lead their teaching-learning process and develop action strategies to transform the work process. Reflecting on implementing these strategies in clinical practice transformed the students’ reality and promoted more dynamic and meaningful learning. However, solving challenges, such as infrastructure, requires a continuous commitment of financial resources and institutional support.

Aim: To investigate the effects of using social media application associated with active learning methodologies on adherence to dental treatment among young adults. Methods: This study controlled intervention was conducted in the city of Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, in 2017, with 40 participants (age range from 19 to 24 years) randomized into Control (n=20) and Intervention Groups (n=20). For ten months the intervention group was invited to participate in a WhatsApp® group. This group used the pedagogical method of problematization with a discussion of oral health-related topics, while the Control Group was only instructed to seek dental treatment. The outcome was treatment adherence, evaluated by the mean period of time elapsed from beginning with follow-up of the study through to the time of the first consultation (Initial Time), and the time counted in days from the first consultation to conclusion of the treatment (Final Time) in both groups. Fisher’s exact test was used to compare adherence between the Groups and the Student’s-t test was used for initial and final times. Results: The results revealed that 66.7% of the Intervention Group and 23.5% of the Control Group adhered to treatment (p<0.05). The number of decayed teeth was higher in the Control Group (p<0.05). Self-efficacy was higher in the Intervention Group (p<0.05). Conclusions: WhatsApp® associated with active learning methodologies increased adherence to dental treatment.

  • Perceptions of the oral health of their patients reported by Brazilian medical residents in psychiatry

Persons with severe mental disorders have higher chances of presenting oral health problems than persons in the general population. Mental disorders are considered public-health problems worldwide. Interpreting statements on oral health made by medical students receiving instruction in psychiatry is essential to provide elements for reflection on their difficulties, barriers or limited knowledge in managing their patients’ oral health. Based on the presupposition that doctors provide their patients with no instruction or support concerning oral complaints, because these do not symbolize the same challenges as those emerging from severe mental disorders. The aim of this study was to interpret symbolic meanings of statements expressed by medical residents in psychiatry at a specialized university outpatient clinic, about their patients’ oral health. Qualitative research using the Qualitative-Clinical method was conducted, adopting the theoretical reference of medical psychology. Data were analyzed by the Clinical-Qualitative Content method and the Seven-Step technique. Based on 06 interviews analyzed, the following categories emerged: “What do I do? Psychiatrists’ dilemmas about not understanding their role in patients’ oral health; and “Dentists do not participate in Balint’ so-called “collusion in anonymity”. It was concluded that among others, the paradigm consisted of a sociological composition, therefore it was stronger than personal decisions that might eventually oppose the barriers to interdisciplinary work posed by the institutional model, which were intertwined with paradigmatic barriers. Thus, specialist training should include a dental perspective, so that oral examinations would always be included in the physical examinations, from an interdisciplinary perspective of the integrity of health-care.
