MicroRNAs in Oral Bio-Fluids as Predictive Biomarkers of Orthodontic Tooth Movement: A Systematic Review Nikita Mohelay, Puneet Batra, Aditya Talwar Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research, 2026 This systematic review was designed to assess scientific evidence of the association of microRNA expression during orthodontic tooth movement through various time points. A systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA checklist. A search strategy was developed in electronic databases including Med Line, Scopus, EBSCO Host and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global until June 2025. Eligibility criteria included studies that investigated microRNA expression in saliva/GCF during orthodontic treatment. The risk of bias of the included studies was analysed using the QUADAS‐2 and RoB‐2 tools. The search retrieved 2800 records, of which nine studies were selected. Minor variations in GCF collection were noted, while stimulated saliva was collected in one study. RT‐PCR and the Fluro meter accounted for the majority of miRNA estimation. Thirteen miRNAs were identified as target biomarkers for OTM regulation. Despite the high risk of bias, the evidence from the current systematic review indicates that microRNAs can be considered as potential biomarkers of orthodontic tooth movement in oral biofluids. 3-Dimensional Evaluation of Two PNAM Techniques (Modified Grayson & AlignerNAM) on Facial Soft Tissue Morphology: A Randomised Clinical Trial Alisha K. H., Puneet Batra, Achint Juneja, Aditya Talwar, Stuti Mohan, S. C. Sood Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal, 2025 Objective Evaluate facial changes after Presurgical Naso-Alveolar Molding (PNAM) in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients treated with Modified Grayson Technique and AlignerNAM (with DynaCleft nasal elevator) using a 3D facial scan. Design Randomised clinical trial. Setting Institutional study. Participants: 20 UCLP patients allocated to two groups (10 patients each). Interventions Group A patients underwent PNAM with Modified Grayson Technique and Group B patients underwent AlignerNAM (with DynaCleft nasal elevator). Their 3D facial scans were obtained by using an iOSbased application (Bellus3D FaceApp) mounted on a novel frame. These .stl files were analysed using 3D software (GOM INSPECT) at three-time intervals; before intervention (T0), after intervention (T1) and one month after lip repair surgery (T2). Main Outcome Measure(s) Changes in facial and nasolabial morphology. Results Both techniques brought significant improvement in the columellar length, nasal tip projection, columella angle, nasal tip angle and a significant reduction in cleft width. At T1, a statistically significant difference in angular and linear measurements was present in both groups. At T2, no statistically significant difference in linear parameters was observed between the two groups except for the outer lateral height of the non-cleft side, basal lateral height of the non-cleft side, and philtrum width. Similar pattern was observed in angular measurements with no statistically significant difference between the two groups except in nasolabial angle, anterior nasal base triangle III, and anterior nasal root triangle. Conclusions Aligner NAM and Modified Grayson technique are equally effective PNAM methods with similar clinical results in nasolabial morphology after lip repair surgery.
Clinical Efficacy of Nasoalveolar Moulding Using Aligner NAM During Presurgical Infant Orthopaedics (PSIO) in Infants With Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate (UCLP): A Retrospective Study Batra Puneet, Bruno Frazao Gribel, Talwar Aditya, Arora Garima Orthodontics and Craniofacial Research, 2025 ObjectiveThe study compares and evaluates planned virtual outcomes with actual post‐treatment outcomes to assess the accuracy and predictability of clinical results during presurgical infant orthopaedics (PSIO) with AlignerNAM in infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate.SettingInstitutional study. Participants: 14 UCLP patients.Materials and MethodsDigital models for infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who had undergone PSIO with AlignerNAM between 1 and 6 weeks were obtained at three stages—pretreatment (To), planned (Tp) and post‐treatment (T1). Linear and angular measurements were made on these using the OrthoAnalyser software (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark). A paired t‐test and Bland–Altman analysis assessed the accuracy between predicted and achieved movements, while inter‐ and intra‐rater reliabilities were also calculated using digital records of seven patients.ResultsThe study found no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the clinical outcome (post‐treatment) values and the predicted values (obtained from the virtual post‐treatment simulation/planned movement). The sagittal reduction in the cleft defect demonstrated the highest accuracy (97.71%), followed by the transverse reduction (95.1%). Overall, linear measurements achieved an accuracy of 94.57% and angular measurements an accuracy of 93.64%. All measurements were within the limits of agreement based on the Bland–Altman plots. The widths of limits of agreement were narrow and similar for both linear and angular measurements showing high levels of agreement.ConclusionAlignerNAM showed high accuracy in reducing cleft size and aligning alveolar segments in UCLP patients, achieving accuracy rates above 90% in both linear and angular dimensions. AlignerNAM appliance is a suitable alternative to conventional PSIO techniques.
A Comparative Evaluation of Surface and Elemental Changes in Stainless Steel and Titanium Orthodontic Miniscrew Implants: A Multiarm Randomized Controlled Trial Aditya Talwar, Shweta R. Bhat, Isha Duggal, Rakesh Kontham International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants, 2025 OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to compare and quantify the surface changes seen in two most commonly used orthodontic miniscrew implants (MSI) materials; titanium and stainless steel after their clinical use. METHODS 40 MSIs (20 titanium and 20 stainless steel) were retrieved from the maxillary arch of 20 subjects (13 females and 7 males) in the age group of 18 - 27 years (mean age=22.4 ± 3.83 years) after their intended use. 40 (20 titanium and 20 stainless steel) asreceived MSIs were used as control. All the MSIs were analyzed under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for the characterization of their morphological condition (blunting of tip, surface defects and corrosion). Furthermore, Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis was carried out to study the changes in surface characterization. RESULTS When imaged using SEM, as-received Titanium and Stainless Steel MSIs demonstrated a relatively smooth surface with no surface defects. However, the retrieved titanium and stainless-steel implants showed increased surface defects (both corrosion and cracks) with the difference being statistically significant. The retrieved Titanium MSIs (115.31±24.38μm) showed 4 times more blunting compared to the retrieved Stainless-steel MSIs (29.74±8.56 μm), with the latter showing 2-3 times more surface corrosion. CONCLUSION Clinical usage had pronounced effects on both Titanium and Stainless steel MSI alloys in terms of changes in the surface characteristics. While stainless steel MSIs are more susceptible to surface corrosion, Titanium MSIs exhibit greater alterations in the form of tipblunting and cracks in screw threads.
