Demographic and Clinicopathological Characteristics of Head Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Study Journal of Pakistan Association of Dermatologists, 2025
Oral squamous cell carcinoma knowledge, attitude, and practice assessment among iraqi dentists: a questionnaire-based study Muhanad Alshami, Rana Murtadha, Hussein Aslan Ain Shams Dental Journal Egypt, 2024 Aim: Oral squamous cell carcinoma ranks among the top cancers in the world. It is preventable and can be successfully treated when diagnosed at an early stage. It is often detected at advanced stages, resulting in aggressive therapies and poor prognosis. The lack of knowledge among dentists about early detection has been shown to contribute to delays in diagnosis and treatment. The study aims to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice towards oral cancer among Iraqi dentists. Materials and Methods: The study was a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study. The questionnaire comprises demographic data and 28 questions regarding knowledge (ten questions), attitude (ten questions), and practice (eight questions). The correct and wrong answers scores 1 and 0 respectively. The knowledge and attitude score are categorized as negative (≤ 5) and positive (> 5). The practice score divided into negative (≤ 4) and positive (> 4). Results: The participants were 449 dentists. The questions regarding common oral cancer and referring the suspected malignancy to a specialist gained the highest correct response. The knowledge regarding the early symptoms of oral cancer was not corrected by the highest percentage of participants. The only significant association between the demographic data and knowledge, attitude, and practice was between good attitude and long experience. Conclusion: This study identified deficiencies in knowledge, attitude, and practice about oral cancer. Therefore, it’s important to review undergraduate curricula and improve educational programs for dentists in terms of early diagnosis and prevention of oral cancer.

Knowledge, Practice, and Attitude Evaluation of Forensic Dentistry among Iraqi Dentists: Questionnaire-Based Study Roweda Al-Dulaimy, Harth Rashidi, Rania Alghurary, Rukaya Alsaraf, Ban Alfarag, Muhanad L Alshami Medical Journal of Babylon, 2023 Background: Forensic dentistry is a branch of forensic science that deals with the examination, analysis, and interpretation of dental evidence in legal investigations. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, practice, and attitudes of Iraqi dentists toward forensic dentistry. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was designed with four sections and distributed to dentists. The four sections were demographic, knowledge (assessed the dentists’ knowledge and consisted of 14 questions), practice (evaluated the dentists’ practices and consisted of six questions), and attitude (consisted of two questions to assess the dentists’ attitudes). For the knowledge, practice, and attitude sections, the answers were either “yes” (correct), “no,” or “I don’t know” (incorrect). The correct answer frequencies were calculated, and the mean scores of responses were compared among the different variables. Results: A total of 414 dentists responded, including 196 male dentists and 218 female dentists. The mean age of the responders was 32.57 years, and the responders were divided according to age into: 304 (≤40 years), and 110 dentists (˃40 years), according to qualifications into: 168 (postgraduate) and 246 (graduate), and according to experience years: 228 (≤10 years) and 186 (˃10 years). The questions related to using teeth as indicators of age received the highest number of correct answers, whereas the use of palatal rugae and lips in forensic dentistry received the lowest scores. Conclusion: Iraq dentists had limited knowledge, practice, and attitude about forensic dentistry. Therefore, it is important for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as official training courses, to focus more attention on forensic dentistry.

A Survey of Systemic Antibiotic Prescription Patterns Amongst Iraqi Dentists Zaid A. Al Marah, Ali A. Abdulkareem, Sarhang S. Gul, Muhanad L. Alshami International Dental Journal, 2022 OBJECTIVES The misuse of antibiotic prescriptions is a common behavior amongst dentists worldwide. Over-prescription of these agents is associated with multiple adverse effects and risk of developing bacterial resistance. The aim of this study was to assess systemic antibiotic prescription patterns amongst dentists in Iraq. METHODS A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in dental centres distributed in 12 Iraqi governates. The questionnaire was composed of two main sections: The first was dedicated to collecting demographic and work-related information, and the second section included questions seeking details about antibiotic prescriptions for different oral and dental conditions. RESULTS A total of 481 valid questionnaires were considered in the final analysis. The numbers of correct and incorrect patterns of prescribing antibiotics for different dental/oral conditions were almost equal (49.6% and 50.4%, respectively). Amongst independent variables investigated, qualification of the dentist and work domain were found to have significant associations with correct prescribing patterns (odds ratio, 1.166 and 1.197, respectively). The majority of dentists preferred amoxicillin as the first-choice antibiotic, followed by "Augmentin" (43.7% and 35.5%, respectively), whilst clarithromycin was the lowest on the list. Azithromycin was the most recommended antibiotic (55.9%) in cases of allergy to penicillin. CONCLUSIONS In general, antibiotics are prescribed for recommended conditions, but the prescription for nonrecommended conditions was also evident amongst Iraqi dentists. Correct pattern of antibiotic prescribing was significantly associated with specialists and those working in the academic field. Additionally, amoxicillin and its derivatives are the most preferred drugs.
