Prison Entrepreneurship Education: A Systematic Literature Review Paula Anjos, Rui Quaresma, Conceição Leal da Costa Proceedings of the European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship Ecie, 2025 This article presents a systematic literature review (SLR) on prison entrepreneurship education, aiming to explore existing knowledge about prison education systems that promote entrepreneurial skills recognized by prisoners. Criminal recidivism is a complex, worldwide social problem for which there seems to be no optimal solution, only preventive measures. Its prevention promotes a social benefit for society as a whole. Lack of employment continues to be a factor in the social reintegration of prisoners, increasing the likelihood of recidivism. The few studies that portray the effect of programs involving entrepreneurship and education in prisons indicate that they are successful in being accepted by the prison population based on their proposed educational opportunities. However, this analysis is not conclusive when it comes to the recognition of opportunities by prisoners, and there is a need for more studies to be carried out to gauge an informed response and support the development of new policies to help meet this social need for successful social reintegration. However, in many countries, the educational offer of entrepreneurship programs does not cover all prisoners. This SLR includes results on entrepreneurship education in prisons regarding the recognition of entrepreneurial skills. It also partially explains the effects of entrepreneurship education in the prison system. The results of this SLR highlight the need for more comprehensive public policies and more effective entrepreneurial educational practices. It is necessary to ensure that all citizens deprived of their liberty have access to entrepreneurship education and that these initiatives align with the employment opportunities available in the labor market. Considering the existing limitations in research in this area, namely the small number of academic studies involving prisoners, combined with the difficulty for researchers to “enter” prison systems, we believe that this study is significant, given that the associated issues of criminal recidivism versus social reintegration affect society as a whole.

Innovation Ambidexterity and Firm Performance: The Moderating Effects of Contextual Factors Rui Fragoso, Vanessa Scazziota, Luiz Guerrazzi, Rui Quaresma, Jorge Casas Novas Entrepreneurship Research Journal, 2024 The purpose of this paper is to assess the moderating effects of motivating and contextual factors on the relationship of innovation ambidexterity and firm performance. A theoretical framework was developed and tested using survey data from a sample of the Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey (GUESSS). The results suggest a positive effect of ambidexterity on firm performance, which is positively moderated by motivating factors, the number of co-owners and normative and cognitive institutions, such as power distance and university environment and program learning, respectively. The study provides important insights for policymakers to promote entrepreneurial education and clues for future research, as well as extends existing theory by offering insights on the moderator effects of individual and contextual factors on the relationship between ambidexterity and firm performance, assuming the benefits of the synergic effects of exploration and exploitation.
The influence of institutional and in-group collectivism practices on next-generation engagement in the family business Pedro Torres, Mário Augusto, Rui Quaresma International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research, 2023 PurposeThis research aims to investigate the influence of country culture on the next generation's intention to become managerial leaders of the family business, focussing on institutional and in-group collectivism practices. The authors investigate not only the direct effect of these collectivism practices on next-generation engagement, but also the extent to which institutional and/or in-group collectivism moderate the relationship between parental support and next-generation engagement and the extent to which institutional and/or in-group collectivism moderate the relationship between self-efficacy and next-generation engagement.Design/methodology/approachUsing cross-national data from the Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students' Survey (GUESSS) and the Global Leadership and Organisational Behaviour Effectiveness (GLOBE), hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) is employed to test the hypotheses using a sample of 33,390 observations collected in 20 countries.FindingsThe main findings show that both institutional and in-group collectivism practices may increase next-generation engagement levels. Furthermore, these cultural practices can amplify the relationship between family business self-efficacy and next-generation engagement. However, institutional collectivism can slightly reduce the positive effect of parental support on family offspring's intention to become leaders of the family business. The results also reveal that parental support has a stronger direct effect on next-generation engagement than family business self-efficacy.Originality/valueThis study examines the influence of cultural practices on next-generation engagement, focussing on collectivism practices. The study distinguishes between institutional collectivism and in-group collectivism. Unlike past research, a direct effect of parental support on next-generation engagement is considered. The study also uses a particular type of self-efficacy: family business self-efficacy. In addition, a multi-level method is employed, which is rarely used in this context.
Contact Tracing Applications in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic: Proposals for Acceptance of its Use Pedro Ramires, Sara Romeiro, Rui Quaresma, Paulo da Silva Atas Da Conferencia Da Associacao Portuguesa De Sistemas De Informacao, 2023 COVID-19 has been the biggest threat humanity has faced since World War II. The rapidity of its spread generated a general feeling of uncertainty and fear. National governments had to adopt measures in a context of total ignorance of the threat. The development of contact tracing applications has emerged as the fastest option to contain the spread of the virus. However, its acceptance has been reduced. This study intends to understand the reasons for the resistance in the use of those applications and to identify proposals so that in future situations the use of applications of contact tracing can be generalized. This is a qualitative study using a literature review in accordance with the procedures. The literature review allowed us to identify, on the one hand, three dimensions in the approach to the theme: technical, legal, and political. In the particular case of COVID-19, the political dimension stood out compared to the others.

IT Ethics Perceptions and Behavior: An International Comparison Milos Ulman, C. G. Marreiros, R. Quaresma, A. L. Harris Journal of Computer Information Systems, 2021 The paper discusses differences in IT ethics perceptions and behavior of college students. The study is one of the few that examine multicultural differences in IT ethics on a convenience sample of 1,648 individuals from seven countries in three continents. We adopted an Ethics Decision-Making Model with Cultural Impacts and applied it on the examination of relations between IT ethics perceptions, behavior, nationality and culture operationalized through Hofstede’s scores. We collected data through an online questionnaire where respondents evaluated 21 scenarios describing various IT ethical issues in the form of a narrative, and seven items on individual’s behavior toward IT ethics issues. The individuals’ perceptions of IT ethics and their behavior differed significantly, and most of these differences were associated with nationality and culture. Associations between perceptions and behavior were also uncovered, which leads to the importance of understanding perceptions in order to change less ethical behavior regarding IT use.
