  • Utilization of reservoir sediments for engineering applications
    Channabasavaraj Wollur, Sowmya H. N., Reshma E. K., Shivananda P.
Proceedings of Institution of Civil Engineers Waste and Resource Management, 2024
In this paper, a detailed characterisation of Tungabhadra (TB) reservoir sediment, such as physical, chemical, geotechnical, morphological and mineralogical attribute, is performed to identify the suitability of dredged sediment as engineering material. Characteristics of sediment is, however, compared with Indian Standard codes for specific engineering applications. Through this study, it is depicted that sediment obtained from the TB Dam reservoirs as such cannot be used for engineering purpose (such as a fill material for highway construction, as sand for concreting and plastering and as foundry sand and other applications); these sediments need prior treatment before using them for the above-mentioned applications. However, it can also be noted that to enhance the strength properties of sediment, air-cooled blast furnace slag (ABS) can be used as a stabiliser. On the other hand, ABS is treated as waste material in steel industry. Thus, it is concluded from this study that TB Dam sediment can be used for many engineering applications provided proper screening and stabilisation technique is adopted. Thus, the cost of dredging is converted into profit by selling the TB Dam sediments for engineering applications.

  • Impact of sulfate contamination on swelling behavior of lime-stabilized clays
SW Dean, SM Rao, P Shivananda
    Journal of ASTM International, 2005
Lime treatment is commonly resorted to improve the geotechnical properties of expansive clays and soft clays. Lime treatment, however, has a detrimental effect on soil behavior if adequate amounts of sulfate are present in soil. Sulfate induced heave of soils stabilized with calcium-based stabilizers occurs due to the presence of primary and secondary sources of sulfate in soils. The occurrence of native sulfate in natural soils constitutes primary sulfate source. Sulfates present in construction wastes, industrial wastes, and spilled chemicals constitute the secondary sulfate source. The present study performs laboratory experiments to examine the impact of sulfate contamination from spillage of sulfate rich chemicals on the heave characteristics of lime-stabilized expansive clays. The objective was realized by infiltrating laboratory prepared sodium sulfate solutions (sulfate concentrations ranged from 13 500 ppm to 27 000 ppm) on the heave characteristics of lime-stabilized specimens that were practically free of natural sulfate (sulfate content of natural soil = 0.05 %). Experimental results illustrated that lime-stabilized expansive clays experiencing sulfate contamination are susceptible to heave from sulfate attack. Mass balance reactions were performed to gain insight into mechanisms of sulfate interactions with lime-stabilized specimens.

  • Role of osmotic suction in swelling of salt-amended clays
    Sudhakar M Rao, P Shivananda
    Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2005
The present study examines the influence of extraneous salt addition on pore-fluid osmotic suction of a clay soil. The dependence of swell potentials of the salt-amended clay specimens on initial pore-fluid osmotic suction is also examined. The osmotic suctions predicted by Van't Hoff's equation are in excess or smaller than the values calculated from the pore water electrical conductivity, depending on whether the Van't Hoff factor in the Van't Hoff equation is included or not. Experimental results suggest that the salt-amended specimens absorbed water and swelled in response to matric suction and chemical concentration gradients on inundation with water in oedometer cells. Salt also diffused from the soil pores of salt-amended specimens to the reservoir water in oedometer cells in response to chemical concentration gradients. Reduction in effective stress from osmotic flow into the soil specimen and increase in interparticle repulsion from reduction in pore-water salt concentration rendered the total swell potentials of salt-amended specimens independent of initial pore-fluid osmotic suction. The initial pre-fluid osmotic suction does, however, significantly affect the rate of swelling.Key words: clays, chemical properties, swell potential, suction.
