Immediate Effects of Kinesio and Dynamic Tapes on Postural Stability and Time to Stabilization in Women With Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Ali Yalfani, Shirin Rasouli, Zahra Raeisi Physical Treatments, 2025 Purpose: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common condition characterized by pain in the front of the knee. Patellar taping can be an effective intervention for reducing painful symptoms. Methods: A total of 39 women with PFPS (aged 20-30 years) participated in this randomized crossover trial. The CoP oscillations during the single-leg stance test and TTS after descending the step were evaluated and recorded on three separate days under the following conditions: without tape (WT or control), with DT and with KT. This was done using a foot pressure measurement system. The data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance with a significance level of P≤0.05. Results: Comparing three different conditions demonstrated that the CoP sway, including the mediolateral and anteroposterior oscillations, sway area, path length, and average velocity of oscillations significantly decreased in the eyes-open and eyes-closed states during the DT condition as compared to the WT (P<0.05). Furthermore, the TTS significantly decreased in the DT condition compared to the WT (P<0.001) and KT (P=0.007) conditions. KT reduced CoP variables only in the EsC condition (P<0.05). Conclusion: DT was more effective than KT and this intervention enhances postural control in women with PFPS. Given its positive effects, it is recommended that future research investigate the long-term impact of utilizing this intervention.
Effects of Comprehensive Physical Exercises Combined With Cognitive Functional Therapy on Women With Low Back Pain Mahsa Asgari, Zahra Raeisi Iranian Rehabilitation Journal, 2024 Objectives: This study examined how women with low back pain (LBP) responded to comprehensive physical exercises (CPEs) combined with cognitive functional therapy (CFT) in terms of pain, disability and postural sway (PS). Methods: A total of 45 women with non-specific chronic LBP (NSCLBP) participated in this quasi-experimental study. The participants were randomly assigned to the CPEs, CPEs combined with CFT and control group (CG) (15 participants per group). The McGill pain questionnaire, Roland-Morris disability questionnaire, and Zebris platform were used to assess pain, disability and PS in anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions with eyes open and closed. For eight weeks, the participants engaged in both CPEs and CPEs combined with CFT. The CG continued their usual routine. The multivariate analysis of variance statistical test with repeated measures design was used to analyze the data (P<0.05). Results: The results revealed that after eight weeks, the patient’s pain and disability significantly decreased in both intervention groups compared to the CG (P<0.001). The CPEs combined with CFT (P<0.001) and the CPEs group (P<0.001) compared to the CG showed a significant decline in AP sways with eyes open. The AP with EC and ML with eyes open demonstrated a significant reduction in the CPEs group with CFT versus the CPEs and CG (P<0.05). The ML oscillations with eyes closed revealed a significant reduction in the CPEs group compared to the CG (P=0.005). Discussion: The CPEs combined with the CFT group showed better results in postural control ability, especially when the eyes were closed which may be a consequence of CFT. Therefore, it is recommended to use CPEs combined with CFT to reduce pain, disability and PS in women with NSCLBP.
The effects of virtual reality training on postural sway and physical function performance on older women with chronic low back pain: A double-blind randomized clinical trial Ali Yalfani, Mitra Abedi, Zahra Raeisi, Azadeh Asgarpour Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, 2024 BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is known as an important debilitating health condition among older women. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of eight-week virtual reality training (VRT) exercises on postural sway and physical function performance (PFP) among older women suffering from CLBP. METHODS: Twenty-seven older women presenting with CLBP were randomized into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was instructed to perform 30-minute VRT exercises three times a week for eight weeks. Plantar pressure variables [sway velocity (SV) and anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) fluctuations of the center of pressure (CoP)], 30-second chair stand test (30CST), and timed up and go (TUG) test were recorded. RESULTS: The VRT group exhibited significant decreases in SV (p= 0.002), AP (p= 0.008), and ML (p= 0.02) fluctuations. Also, the performance of the VRT group in the 30CST and TUG tests significantly improved after the exercises (P< 0.001). CONCLUSION: According to the results, VRT and the program used in this study should be used to enhance balance and PFP in older women with CLBP who mostly prefer activities that are accessible and feasible in low-risk environments.
Effects of Combined Exercises and Short Foot Exercise With and Without Isometric Hip Abduction In Women With Flatfoot Aftab Zarali, Zahra Raeisi, and Physical Treatments, 2023 Purpose: This study aims to examine the effect of 6 weeks of combined exercises (CE), short foot exercise (SFE), and SFE with isometric hip abduction (IHA) on dynamic balance (DB), joint position sense (JPS), and strength in women with flexible flatfoot (FF). Methods: A total of 40 women with flexible flatfoot (FF) participated in this semi-experimental study and were randomly assigned to three groups as follows: CE (n=14), SFE (n=13), and IHA (n=13). Six weeks of exercise were split into 3 sessions under supervision and 3 sessions at home were completed by the participants. The Y balance test, goniometer, and dynamometer were used to assess DB, JPS, and strength before and after the exercises, respectively. The mixed-model repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance statistical test was used to analyze the data with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results revealed that after performing the exercises, there was a significant difference in the DB in the SFE group in two posteromedial and posterolateral directions; meanwhile, in the IHA group this difference was in three directions, while in the CE group, it was in the posterolateral direction (P<0.05). After the exercises, no significant difference was observed in either group’s JPS or plantar flexors and dorsal flexors strength (P>0.05). Between the groups, there was no difference in any of the other variables (P>0.05). Conclusion: Considering that the DB changes in the IHA group were more than in the other two groups, these exercises are suggested to improve the DB in women with FF.
Bilateral symmetry of vertical time to stabilization in postural sway after double-leg landing in elite athletes with unilateral chronic ankle sprain Ali Yalfani, Zahra Raeisi Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, 2022 Background Lower limb asymmetry among athlete with unilateral chronic ankle instability (CAI) during bilateral landing can be a potential source of ankle sprain reinjury. The aim of study was to investigate the effect of bilateral symmetry of vertical time to stabilization (vTTS) in postural sway after double-leg landing (DLL) in elite athletes with unilateral CAI. Methods Twenty professional players with unilateral CAI and ten healthy controls were assigned to three groups (soccer, basketball, and control groups, n = 10 each). The postural balance during DLL tasks was assessed based on center of pressure (CoP) and vTTS. Multiple analysis of variance was conducted to statistically analyse the CoP and vTTS which followed by Bonferroni’s post hoc test (P < 0.05). Results The vTTS of the injured foot was significantly longer in the soccer and basketball players than in the control players (P = 0.006, p < 0.001 respectively). The intragroup comparison showed a significant difference in the vTTS of CAI and uninjured feet among the basketball players (mean difference = 1.3 s). The basketball group exhibited a worse balance in CoP oscillations results between groups. Conclusions The findings suggested that symmetry between double-leg vTTS values, may be important as much as the sooner vTTS in reduced CoP oscillations and enhanced balance after DLL. Balancing exercises should achieve sooner vTTS in soccer players and symmetry in the double-leg vTTS of basketball players with unilateral CAI while maintaining static balance during dynamic-to-static postural changes to reduce recurrent ankle sprain.
