Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Toward Sustainable Waste Management: A Study Among Youth in Higher Education Institutions Siti Izaidah Azmi, Nur Syazwana Hamzah, Radieah Mohd Nor, Suzyrman Sibly Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2026 One of the important worldwide challenges is waste management. As the population grows, the trend of increasing waste generation continues. Poor waste management can affect the environment for centuries. Thus, young people, who will become future engineers, leaders, decision-makers, and change agents, have an essential role in shaping sustainable waste management practices. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the level of waste management-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among 400 students in higher education institutions (HEIs). The findings demonstrated that respondents had favourable opinions and an adequate understanding of waste management. Additionally, their knowledge and attitudes are strongly related to their waste management practices. According to these results, enhancing students’ attitudes rather than their knowledge may be a more effective way to improve waste management practices. By highlighting the need to incorporate sustainability education into curricula, improve campus waste infrastructure, and encourage behavioural initiatives that enable students to adopt sustainable practices, the study offers practical implications for HEIs and policymakers.
Reviewing Agricultural Challenges and Solutions for Empowering Smallholders in the Middle East Ansam Ghanayem, Radieah Mohd Nor Research on World Agricultural Economy, 2025 Smallholder agriculture is vital in rural livelihoods, managing up to 75% of the world’s agricultural land. However, in the Middle East, smallholder farmers face complex interrelated challenges, most notably climate change, water and irrigation, and economic pressures. These factors mutually exacerbate and increase the vulnerability of smallholder farmers, reducing productivity, yield stability, and lack of access to nutritious food, especially for vulnerable groups. Previous research has focused on individual challenges and region-specific data, leaving little room for comprehensive insights into the interactions between these factors. This study aims to analyse the interrelated challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the Middle East, quantify their impact on food security and livelihoods, and propose sustainable strategies to improve agricultural resilience and sustainability. The method used was a systematic review, following relevant guidelines such as PRISMA to ensure a transparent and rigorous process. The results showed that Iran and Saudi Arabia contributed the largest data. The main challenges are low irrigation system efficiency, rising input costs, and limited access to agricultural innovations. These challenges impact five livelihood assets: human, physical, social, financial, and natural, collectively affecting food security. The analysis shows the need for collaboration between the agriculture and technology sectors, including using AI-based applications and hardware to improve production efficiency, manage water, and reduce costs. Recommendations include integrating government policies, field practices, and new technologies as key to better food security, and training farmers in utilizing agricultural innovations for sustainable livelihoods in the region.
Formulating Strategies for Improving Food Security among Smallholder Farmers in The Middle Jordan Valley (Ghawr) Ansam Abdullah Ghanayem, Radieah Mohd Nor, Amani A Al-Assaf Research on World Agricultural Economy, 2025 The challenges faced by smallholder farmers are a critical issue for sustainable development, particularly in food security. Smallholder farmers in the Middle Jordan Valley face multiple constraints such as land degradation, climate change, limited market access, and inadequate resources. These pressures have led to migration out of agriculture, exacerbated by weak policies and regional conflicts. This study aims to analyse the factors affecting smallholder farmers’ food security, including key challenges, agricultural practices, and drivers of migration, and to explore strategies to strengthen food security in the region. This study used a qualitative approach with a survey method among smallholder farmers in the Middle Jordan Valley. The results showed that key challenges include high input costs, crop diseases, mounting debt, complex export policies, and water constraints due to extreme climates. The analysis identified two quadrants of push factors: Quadrant 1 covers short-term impacts such as financial, nutritional, and health pressures, while Quadrant 2 contains long-term impacts such as youth dissatisfaction with the agricultural sector due to unsupportive policies. This study provides policy recommendations to maintain the sustainability of agriculture in the Middle Jordan Valley. The proposed measures include the development of water-efficient irrigation strategies, implementing environmentally friendly agricultural practices, and reforming export policy, strengthening local market access, providing agricultural input subsidies, strengthening farmer cooperatives, and income diversification programs and new skills education. These recommendations aim to improve the welfare of small farmers and attract the younger generation's interest in continuing to contribute to the agricultural sector.

A Look into the Impact of Syrian Refugees on Women-Owned Micro and Small Enterprises in Jordan Lubna Mohd. Thaher and World Journal of Entrepreneurship Management and Sustainable Development, 2022 Jordan has experienced an unprecedented refugee crisis since 2011, adding to the country' s burdens due to the scarcity of resources and previous waves of asylum seekers. Although micro and small enterprises (MSEs) aim to empower women, specifically regarding achieving the UN' s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, there is very little research focus on this type of enterprise and how refugees impact MSEs' sustainability. Purpose: This paper investigates how Syrian refugees impact Jordanian women-owned MSEs' sustainability. Design: The study used case studies and qualitative interviews with 24 female entrepreneurs whose enterprises did or did not achieve sustainability; five experts were also interviewed. Findings: No significant negative impact of refugees on women' s MSEs was found. Original: This study offers a unique perspective by filling an academic gap in the research on the influence refugees have on women' s MSEs. Implications: Further studies are recommended to build a solid database of female entrepreneurs.
