Pertanika Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science, 2023
Bee pollen is a complete food containing comprehensive nutrients and therapeutic properties that could eliminate free radicals. Three stingless bee species native to Malaysia were used to prepare bee pollen ethanolic extracts (BPE): Geniotrigona thoracica, Heterotrigona itama, and Tetrigona apicalis. The methodology used in this study was a trypan blue exclusion assay for cell proliferation activity in cultured breast adenocarcinoma human cell lines (MCF-7) and mammary epithelial human cell lines (MCF-10A). In addition, the therapeutic index (TI) was analyzed to assess the relative antiproliferative activity of BPE on cancer versus normal cells. Geniotrigona thoracica, BPE exhibited the highest therapeutic index (TI = 3.12) compared to H. itama (TI = 1.16) and T. apicalis (TI = 0.90) BPE. Each species represents different bioactive compounds due to different pollen foraging activities. Therefore, the highest TI species (G. thoracica) could be a potential candidate to be developed as a potential chemotherapeutic agent.

    Journal of Apicultural Science, 2018
The pollen of stingless bees is derived from flower pollen mixed with bee digestive enzymes and preserved with honey and nectar. In this study, the volatile compounds present in ethanolic bee pollen extracts (BPEs) from three species of the Malaysian stingless bee were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Hydrocarbons, sugars and its derivatives, fatty acids, amino acids, alcohol, uridine, aldehyde and an unknown carbamate were detected. Mannitol, the main sugar compounds, represented 54.34% in Trigona thoracica, 39.11% in Trigona apicalis and 33.05% in Trigona itama. Propanoic acid and hexadecanoic acid were the main hydrocarbons present in the extract of Trigona apicalis (4.04%) and Trigona thoracica pollen (1.28%) respectively. The polyunsaturated fatty acids linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid were found in small amounts in all BPEs (0.07-1.11%). The chemical compounds found in BPEs had biological activities, thus bee pollen may be useful in traditional medicine and as a health supplement.

    Journal of Apicultural Research, 2017
Bee pollen consists of flower pollen mixed with bee digestive enzymes and preserved with some honey and nectar. It contains high antioxidant activity due to the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids. This study was aimed at investigating the chemical profiles of bee pollen extracts from three species of Malaysian stingless bee, Trigona (Tetrigona) apicalis, Trigona (Heterotrigona) itama and Trigona (Geniotrigona) thoracica. Chemical profiles analyzed were total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant assay. T. apicalis showed the highest TPC value (135.93 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g) followed by T. thoracica (103.62 ± 0.04 mg GAE/g) and T. itama (33.46 ± 0.02 mg GAE/g). The concentration of flavonoids in this study showed that T. thoracica had the highest TFC (31.80 ± 0.13 mg QE/g), followed by T. apicalis (25.72 ± 0.17 mg QE/g) and T. itama (15.28 ± 0.04 mg QE/g). In antioxidant measurement, T. thoracica gave higher percentage of DPPH inhibition with the EC50 was 0.86 ± 0.01 mg/ml. This was followed by T. apicalis at concentration of 1.05 ± 0.01 mg/ml and T. itama at 3.24 ± 0.03 mg/ml. In conclusion, bee pollen extract from T. thoracica showed the highest TFC and DPPH inhibition whereas T. apicalis showed the highest TPC value. Due to the diversity and complexity of the bee pollen, further investigations should be performed to further evaluate the chemical profiles of polyphenolic composition, which may be important for its health promoting effects.
  • Interrelationship of clinicopathological features of breast cancer among different ethnic groups
Nizuwan A, Nurdianah HF, Musa MY
    Jurnal Teknologi, 2016
Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that can be classified using a variety of clinical and pathological features. In Malaysia, breast cancer remains the most prevalence malignancy among women which vary substantially by racial/ ethnic group. A pilot study was conducted to determine clinical characteristics of breast cancer (BrCa) and the association with demographic factors from a set of data retrieved from Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI), Universiti Sains Malaysia (n = 236). In this study, 55.1% of the patients were Malay followed by Chinese (33.9%) and Indian (11.0%). By using Pearson Chi-Square test, it was reported that ethnicity was significantly associated with age at diagnosis (p = 0.001) and family history (p = 0.034). In addition, interrelationships (p value < 0.05) existed between: (1) ethnics with age at diagnosis (2) ER with PR, TNM staging and grading (3) PR with tumor grading. In summary, interrelationships status of BrCa clinicopathological features can be used to better understand BrCa in predicting prognosis for the patients.

To evaluate the antioxidant and antiproliferative effect of methanolic bee pollen extract (BPE) of Malaysian stingless bee [Lepidotrigona terminata (L. terminata)] and its synergistic effect with cisplatin (a chemotherapeutic drug) on MCF-7 cancer cell line. The antioxidant activity of BPE from L. terminata was measured by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) assay. Antiproliferative activity at different concentrations of BPE and cisplatin was determined through using MTT assay on MCF-7 and L929 cell lines. An interaction effect (synergistic, additive and antagonistic) between BPE and cisplatin was determined by CompuSyn software based on MTT assay data. The EC50 (50% decrement of DPPH inhibition) of BPE was 0.5 mg/mL. L. terminata BPE exhibited antiproliferative activity on both cancer and normal cell lines. The IC50 (concentration of drug that was required for 50% of cell inhibition in vitro) of BPE on MCF-7 was 15 mg/mL whereas in normal cell line L929 was 26 mg/mL. The IC50 for cisplatin on MCF-7 was 20 μmol/L. The combination effect of BPE and cisplatin on MCF-7 cells showed that BPE at 15 mg/mL was able to potentiate the inhibitory effect of cisplatin at all different concentrations (2.5–20.0 mg/mL). The average of cancer cells inhibition which was potentiated by BPE was around 50%. A combination index values of less than 1 reported in the CompuSyn software further proved the synergistic effect between BPE and cisplatin, suggesting that BPE was working synergistically with cisplatin. Our study therefore suggested that BPE of Malaysian stingless bee, L. terminata is a potential chemopreventive agent and can be used as a supplementary treatment for chemotherapy drugs. BPE might be able to be used to potentiate the effect of chemotherapy drugs with the possibility to reduce the required dose of the drugs. The molecular mechanisms of how the BPE exerts antiproliferative activity will be a much interesting area to look for in future studies.
  • Seropositive status of dengue virus infection among blood donors in North Malaysia

Asian Journal of Transfusion Science, 2014
Dengue virus (DENV) infection is a tropical disease causing morbidity and mortality. It is endemic in certain regions of Malaysia causing major public health problems. [1] It is transmitted largely through vector mosquito Aedes aegypti. The viremia among blood donors was reported from the endemic area of South American region. [2] In order to assess the magnitude of viremia among our blood donors, we screened serum samples from 360 random donors selected in a consecutive manner from blood donations during an outbreak of the disease from December 2009 to January 2010. Sample size was determined using online software sample size calculator for prevalence studies. [3] Commercial kits (PanBio, Australia) were used for detection of anti-DENV.
