Fortification strategies of ancient settlements and natural challenges: the defensive walls of Kyrkhudzhra as an example of architectural adaptation S.Sh. Kubaev, A.M. Oltiboyev, N.Yu. Potapova Vestnik Archeologii Antropologii I Etnografii, 2026 This article examines the fortifications of the Kyrkhudzhra settlement, one of the most ancient archaeological sites in the Fergana Valley, dating back to the 6th–4th centuries BC. The research focuses on the evolution of defensive walls, which were constructed in three distinct building phases. In the first construction phase, the defensive structures were built using unbaked bricks, which reflects early architectural traditions. During the second phase, the existing walls were reinforced with layers of pakhsa, enhancing their thickness and durability. During the third phase, a second defensive wall was built parallel to the Syr Darya River. This structure primarily served as protection against floods triggered by earthquakes. This development highlights the environmental component of the defense system. The findings demonstrate that the fortification strategies at Kyrkhudzhra were adapted to address both military threats and natural hazards. A double-layered wall structure and the use of pakhsa and natural soil reflect advanced engineering knowledge. Furthermore, archaeological discoveries, including ceramic fragments, have provided insights into the chronology and cultural context of the site. The defensive walls of Kyrkhudzhra embody a unique synthesis of military and environmental protection functions, making them a significant case study for examining the architectural and engineering achievements of the Early Iron Age. Future research at the site offers opportunities to deepen our understanding of the adaptive strategies of ancient communities in Central Asia.
Traces of a Lost Book Culture: A New Interpretation of the Architectural Mysteries of Khwarezm Surat Kubaev, Sharifa Toshova, Munira Khatamova, and Stratum Plus, 2025 This article offers a refined perspective on the so-called “unusual rooms” identified at the archaeological sites of Kavat-Kala and Zamakhshar in Khwarezm. Incorporating findings from recent excavations, architectural analysis, comparative studies within the Islamic world, and references to medieval sources, the study posits that these spaces may have functioned as libraries or archival repositories. Earlier interpretations considered utilitarian purposes such as storage, dovecotes, or meeting halls. However, specific architectural elements — including symmetrical niches, benches (suffas), and intentional spatial layouts — suggest a design optimised for manuscript storage and use. This reinterpretation enhances our understanding of the intellectual milieu of medieval Khwarezm, highlighting its role as not only a political and economic centre but also a dynamic hub of scientific and cultural activity. The evidence points to a widespread written culture, with potential instances of both public and private libraries among the urban elite. Furthermore, the recurrence of similar room types across various estates implies either centralised planning or the intentional adoption of architectural forms linked to scholarly distinction. The research advances knowledge of educational practices, manuscript preservation, and knowledge transmission in Central Asia during the 12th—13th centuries, offering significant insights into the broader intellectual history of the Islamic world.
FROM STEPPE TO CITIES: THE ROLE OF CENTRAL ASIAN MEDIEVAL 'PSEUDOTRIPOLYE’ CERAMICS IN NOMADIC ADAPTATION TO URBAN LIFE Surat Sh. Kubaev, Sherbek A. Omаnov, Mukhriddin Pardaev, Munira M. Khatamova, Ulugbek L. Artikov, et al. Povolzhskaya Arkheologiya, 2025 Archaeological investigations, encompassing analyses of craft production including ceramics alongside written sources, are paramount for reconstructing the socio-economic and ethnic history of a region. The study of ceramic production processes provides valuable insights into the evolution of cultural practices over time. Ceramic artifacts, including their composition and decorative features, serve as crucial archaeological evidence reflecting ethnic interactions, migration patterns, and trade routes in specific contexts. This study aims to reassess the significance of ceramics as primary artifacts for understanding ethno-cultural transformations and adaptive processes in new territories. Special attention is focused on the culture of molded painted ceramics from the medieval period, which has long remained on the periphery of scientific interest. The origin of this type of ceramics is linked to nomadic pastoralists whose migrations have had a significant impact on the cultural landscape. The mobile lifestyle and technological skills of nomads, including metalworking and other craft practices, could have played a pivotal role in the formation of urban centers specializing in metalworking and other industrial sectors. Nomadic societies facilitated not only the implementation of new production technologies and methods, but also provided the supply of raw materials and labor for the development of urban craft centers.
Hairstyles of the Early Medieval Sogdiana (by the materials of carved wood from Kafirkala) М.N. Sultanova, S.Sh. Kubaev Vestnik Archeologii Antropologii I Etnografii, 2024 One of the unique archaeological finds is represented by a charred tree with carved images, found at the set-tlement of Kafirkala in the Samarkand Oblast. It consists of a panel itself and several parts. The panel of a rectan-gular shape (measuring 124×141 cm) is composed of two boards fastened together with iron brackets. On the front of the panel, a composition of 46 human figures arranged in four tiers is carved, whilst more than 20 other characters have been identified on the other parts of the surviving fragmentary wooden elements of the decora-tive design. In the centre of the two upper tiers of the panel, a large figure of a goddess seated on a throne in the form of a lion couchant was placed, which all the other characters are pivoted to. According to researchers, the panel depicts worship of the goddess Nana-Anahita or a gathering of Sogdians to conduct ceremonies. This pa-per is aimed at the study of hairstyles of the characters of the wooden décor of Kafir-kala as indicators of the cul-ture and living of the Sogdian population. The craftsman depicted about ten types of hairstyles which were known in Sogdiana in the Early Middle Ages. Previously, finds related to hair care (scissors, hairpins, comb) were re-corded in the territory of Central Asia, but evidence of the development of this practice from sites and art objects was a rare exception. The analysis of the characters in the composition of the carved wood from Kafirkala showed a variety of hairstyles that existed amongst the population of Sogdiana. The ten types of hairstyles identified origi-nate from ancient cultures of the Hellenistic world of Middle East, Ancient Egypt and Rome. This signifies the peculiar assimilation of different cultures in Sogdiana. At the same time, differences in the haircut styles of the characters of the Kafarkala panel from the hairstyles of the people of the Afrasiab and Penjikent murals of the 7th–8th centuries suggest that they were created relatively earlier. The fact that no long hairstyles, characteristic of the Turkic groups of the 7th–8th centuries, are shown in the Kafirkala panel provides the reason to attribute it to exam-ples of pre-Turkic Sogdian art.
IMAGE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS ON CERAMIC PRODUCTS OF CENTRAL ASIA Surat Sh. Kubaev and Povolzhskaya Arkheologiya, 2022 In the culture of the ancient world, the symbolism of plants was of particular importance. It is not for nothing that legends associated with plants have appeared in the myths of many peoples of the world. From the early Paleolithic era, in the economy of ancient people, a special place was given to collecting fruits and roots of plants. They also knew that plants were food for most wild animals, which provided the protein for the human body. In search of edible plants, they skillfully studied the surrounding fauna. Thus, the first knowledge appeared about the peculiar properties of plants in the world around them. These medicinal plants were eaten raw, or some of them were used to make "divine drinks" or "drinks of immortality", which at the beginning of their appearance also had medicinal or aperitif purposes, and also "lifted the spirits" of people. Therefore, in the visual arts, images of these plants are often found. If in antiquity rocks and stones were the main objects on which people created their first images, later ceramics began to play this role. During archaeological excavations at the Khantepa site located near the city of Karshi, the Republic of Uzbekistan, fragments of a vessel with plant ornament were found. The study of this find allowed us to draw attention to the symbolism of plants in the art of various cultures of the peoples of the world. New research proves once again that the temples of Central Asia were also the first medical institutions where the first medicines were manufactured.
