Sustainable irrigation practices for root and tuber crops Goutam Kumar Dash, Saraswati Pati, Sourav Paramanik, Dinkar J. Gaikwad, Soumya Kumar Sahoo, Jagdish Jena, Awadhesh Kumar Sustainable Production of Root and Tuber Crops, 2025 Concerns about groundwater quality and aquifer depletion have intensified due to intensive agricultural practices, particularly in root and tuber crop production. Efficient water and nitrogen use significantly affects crop growth, yield, and quality; yet low precipitation and high variability pose challenges. Implementing light-to-moderate deficit irrigation (10%–30% of full irrigation) can enhance water and nitrogen use efficiencies, yielding better outcomes depending on climate, variety, soil type, and water availability. Increasing yield and water efficiency is crucial for food security in water-scarce areas. Research indicates that combining ridge-furrow planting, film mulching, and supplemental irrigation can boost both yield and efficiency. Effective irrigation management techniques include sprinkler and drip irrigation, irrigation scheduling based on soil moisture, local crop coefficients, and crop modeling systems. Furthermore, reducing nitrogen application rates through deficit irrigation practices can improve tuber yield and quality while lowering production costs and nitrate leaching.
Comparative performance of lettuce cultivars Batavia and Romain in nutrient film technique under hydroponics system CHANDRASEKHAR SAHU, DINKAR JAGANNATH GAIKWAD, SATYABRATA NANDA, GOUTAM KUMAR DASH, SAGAR MAITRA, SUBASH CHANDRA MUNDA, SANJANA MULLAPUDI Crop Research, 2025 Due to the impact of climate change, modern agriculture faces growing challenges demanding innovative and sustainable solutions like soilless farming. Hydroponic systems, particularly the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), have gained attention for their efficiency in water, nutrient and space management. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a widely consumed leafy vegetable known for its health-promoting nutrients and bioactive compounds, making it a key candidate for hydroponic cultivation. The experiment was conducted at Centurion University of Technology and Management, Paralakhemundi, Odisha, India, using an A-frame vertical NFT system with four tiers designed to hold 64 mesh pots. After preparation of the nursery in pro-trays, lettuce seedlings of Batavia and Romain were transferred into the NFT channels and grown in a circulating nutrient solution with slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) and electrical conductivity (1.0–2.4 dS/m) throughout the crop cycle. The cultivar Romain exhibited superior growth characteristics, including increased leaf area, plant height, root length, and chlorophyll content. Conversely, Batavia displayed higher fresh leaf weight, indicating its potential for applications prioritizing fresh weight. Notably, Romain's leaves showed marginally higher nitrogen content, which correlated with its enhanced biomass and chlorophyll concentration.
Genetic variability and character association study on cooking quality attributing traits and DUS characters of rice genotypes in Southern Odisha R Anjan, N P S Maddukuri, K G Vishal, H Ebenezar, K D Goutam, M Pandhi, R Sanghamitra Plant Science Today, 2025 Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food crop of global importance, with grain quality traits playing a crucial role in consumer preference. Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) testing, alongside the evaluation of cooking quality parameters to assess the extent of genetic variability and to determine character association study among cooking attributing traits. So, a study was conducted during the Kharif season (2024-25) at the Post Graduate Research Farm of Centurion University of Technology and Management, Odisha, to evaluate 45 rice genotypes for DUS and cooking quality traits using Randomised Complete Block Design with three replications. Analysis of variances revealed significant variance for kernel length, kernel length after cooking, seed protein content and amylose content. High heritability and high genetic advance as a percentage of the mean (GAM) were noted for all the characters, indicating the presence of additive gene action. Path coefficient analysis revealed that kernel length had the highest positive direct effect on kernel linear elongation ratio, while kernel length after cooking showed a very high negative effect. Positive correlations between kernel linear elongation ratio and seed protein content, amylose content and kernel length affirm their influence. Ketki Joha and Shilkote recorded with maximum kernel breadth and kernel breadth after cooking, respectively. Highest protein content exhibited by Bygon manjira, amylose content raised high for PB1886, kernel linear elongation ratio shown by Nefbi julsi. Kernel length and amylose content emerged as the pivotal, highly heritable traits defining rice cooking quality, offering clear prospects for breeding premium grain quality.
