  • Virtual Escapes: A Pedagogical Strategy for Developing Emotional Competence in Nursing Students
Lisa Gomes, Maria Cassar, Roderick Bugeja, Inês Oliveira, João Cainé, et al.
    Creative Nursing, 2026
Emotional competence, the ability to manage interpersonal relationships through understanding one's and others’ emotions, encompasses two dimensions: cognitive and behavioral. In nursing practice, the combination of these dimensions allows for better performance in highly complex clinical situations. Nursing education does not always emphasize these competences. This pilot study explored the potential of an escape room, a Serious Games (SGs) prototype with virtual reality (VR), as a pedagogical strategy for eliciting emotions in a safe learning environment. Participants’ immersion in the game provided an opportunity to identify, manage, and process emotions. Data were gathered by a questionnaire and by observation of performance. The findings revealed that participants felt various emotions (n = 51) while playing the game. The least frequent reported emotions were hope, shame, and contempt. Admiration, pride, satisfaction, and fear were the most frequently reported emotions. These findings suggest that using a SGs prototype with VR as a pedagogical tool holds significant potential in emotion elicitation in a safe learning environment, implying its value as a construct of emotional competence. Further research to verify educational value is recommended.
  • Anxiety and Depression Symptoms Among Spanish Nurses During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study
Aida Gámez-Fernández, Lisa Gomes, Cristina Sánchez-Lorenzo, Carmen Baldonedo-Mosteiro, Sara Franco-Correia, et al.
    Nursing Forum, 2025
The COVID‐19 pandemic has caused serious psychological consequences in the general population and particularly in health professionals. Among these, a group that is considered at risk is nurses who found themselves working on the front lines. Aim This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among Spanish nurses during the COVID‐19 pandemic and to determine the correlation between anxiety, depression and associated factors. Design A cross‐sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted. Methods The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used for the evaluation of anxiety and depression symptoms. The study was carried out during the months of February to May 2021. An online form was used due to the difficulties in carrying out in‐person research as a result of health restrictions. Information about the study, sociodemographic variables, variables related to COVID‐19 and the HADS was sent. Results Of the total sample, 73.1% presented any anxiety symptoms and 44.1% presented any depression symptoms. Conclusions Anxiety symptoms were associated with female sex, living with parents, schedule changes, perceiving high exposure, fear, no sport/recreation and stressful work; depression associated with stressful work and absence of fear; and depression cooccurred with anxiety. Depression symptoms were associated with stressful work and absence of fear. These data should be valuable for the dissemination of occupational health policies regarding anxiety and depression detection and further psychological support of nurses and promote both physical and psychological well‐being among this professional group.

Inês Oliveira, Vítor Carvalho, Filomena Soares, Paulo Novais, Eva Oliveira, et al.
    Information Switzerland, 2023
In recent years, the role of emotions in digital games has gained prominence. Studies confirm emotions’ substantial impact on gaming, influencing interactions, effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. Combining gaming dynamics, Virtual Reality (VR) and the immersive Escape Room genre offers a potent avenue through which to evoke emotions and create a captivating player experience. The primary objective of this study is to explore VR game design specifically for the elicitation of emotions, in combination with the Escape Room genre. We also seek to understand how players perceive and respond to emotional stimuli within the game. Our study involved two distinct groups of participants: Nursing and Games. We employed a questionnaire to collect data on emotions experienced by participants, the game elements triggering these emotions, and their overall user experience. This study demonstrates the potential of VR technology and the Escape Room genre as a powerful means of eliciting emotions in players. “Escape VR: The Guilt” serves as a successful example of how immersive VR gaming can evoke emotions and captivate players.
  • SBAR Method for Improving Well-Being in the Internal Medicine Unit: Quasi-Experimental Research
María Cristina Martínez-Fernández, Sara Castiñeiras-Martín, Cristina Liébana-Presa, Elena Fernández-Martínez, Lisa Gomes, et al.
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2022
SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a tool for standardizing and improving interprofessional communication. This study aims to explore the impact of SBAR in healthcare professionals’ wellbeing, through concepts such as job satisfaction, engagement, resilience, and job performance, in the internal medicine unit of a university hospital in the province of León (Spain). This is an observational, descriptive, longitudinal case study with a pre- and post-intervention approach. Questionnaires were distributed to a group of doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistants before and after the implementation of the SBAR tool in the ward. The use of SBAR was monitored to ensure staff compliance. Data statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS program. Resilience levels increased significantly post-intervention. Job satisfaction and engagement levels remained neutral, slightly decreasing post-intervention. Besides’ being a useful tool to improve communication, SBAR was effective in improving resilience among staff. Several aspects related to hospital management may have had an impact on job satisfaction and engagement results.
  • Descriptive Study of Friendship Networks in Adolescents and Their Relationship with Self-Efficacy and Alcohol Consumption Using Social Network Analysis
Enedina Quiroga-Sánchez, Alberto González García, Natalia Arias-Ramos, Cristina Liébana-Presa, Pilar Marques-Sánchez, et al.
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2022
Alcohol is a widely used legal drug. Self-efficacy takes on great importance in an adolescent’s development. Levels of self-efficacy can contribute to the decision-making process of the adolescent. In this phase, a group of friends becomes increasingly important. Alcohol is present in different social aspects. Adolescents use alcohol as a social facilitator or as part of the development of their autonomy. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the structure of the friendship network, self-efficacy, and alcohol consumption in adolescents. Methods: We used an online platform with validated self-reported questionnaires to collect the data. The sample consisted of 195 adolescents aged between 16 and 18, from different educational centers in Bierzo (Spain). Results: It was found that 43.6% of the adolescents in our research were high-risk consumers. Significant differences were obtained in terms of self-efficacy and different network metrics. These networks were represented by considering the levels of alcohol consumption. In the friendship network, we observed how the central adolescents presented higher levels of self-efficacy and lower alcohol consumption. Conclusions: Self-efficacy is established as a predictor of coping and not consuming alcohol and adolescence as a crucial moment to implement prevention strategies. Social Network Analysis is a useful tool that provides an image of the context in which adolescents find themselves.
