Evaluation of telomere length, reactive oxygen species, and apoptosis in spermatozoa of patients with oligospermia Ria Margiana, Reena Gupta, Watheq Mohammed Al‐Jewari, Ahmed Hjazi, Hashem O. Alsaab, et al. Cell Biochemistry and Function, 2024 50% of cases of infertility are caused by male factor, which acquired or congenital problems may bring on. Male infertility can be caused by oligospermia and asthenozoospermia, which are common. Since the same mutations that cause azoospermia in some people also cause oligozoospermia in others, oligozoospermia may be thought of as a less severe form of azoospermia. Studies have demonstrated telomere length, catalase activity, super oxide dismutase (SOD), and DNA fragmentation can be influential factors for male infertility. The amount of apoptosis, oxidative stress factors, telomere length, and DNA fragmentation were some aspects of healthy sperm that we chose to look into in this study and compare to oligospermia individuals. Oligospermia patients (n = 24) and fertile men (n = 27) semen samples were collected, and the apoptosis rate of sperms in both groups was analyzed (Flow cytometry). Also, gene expression of apoptotic and antiapoptotic markers and telomere length were examined (real‐time polymerase chain reaction). The sperm DNA fragmentation kit was used to determine DNA fragmentation and to evaluate catalase and SOD activity; the specific kits and methods were utilized. Higher expression levels of caspase3 (p = .0042), caspase8 (p = .0145), caspase9 (p = .0275), and BAX (p = .0202) mRNA were observed in patients who had oligospermia. In contrast, lower mRNA expression of BCL‐2 (p = .0009) was detected in this group. In addition, telomere length was decreased in the oligospermia group (p < .0001) compared to the health group. Moreover, the frequency of apoptosis is induced in patients (p = .0026). The catalase activity is low (p = .0008), but the SOD activity is high (p = .0015) in the patient group. As a result of our findings, we may list the sperm cell apoptosis rate, telomere length, the degree of sperm DNA fragmentation, and lastly, the measurement of significant and efficient oxidative stress markers like SOD and catalase in semen plasma among the principal diagnostic characteristics for oligospermia. Future studies will be better able to treat oligospermia by showing whether these indicators are rising or falling.
Evaluating knowledge, habits, and beliefs regarding dietary supplements as a protective measure against COVID-19 in Malaysia and Iraq: A postsecond wave cross-sectional analysis Ali Haider Mohammed, Bassam Abdul Rasool Hassan, Ali Blebil, Juman Dujaili, Abdulrasool M. Wayyes, et al. Health Science Reports, 2024 Background and AimsThe Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic brought to the forefront various public health approaches, including the consumption of dietary supplements (DS) as a protective measure. With misinformation regarding the virus and the associated benefits of DS prevalent, this study aimed to understand knowledge, habits, and beliefs related to DS usage as a protective measure during the pandemic in Malaysia and Iraq, two countries with deep‐rooted traditions in herbal and supplement usage.MethodsA cross‐sectional research study was conducted between September 2021 and March 2022 using a validated online survey. The participants included Malaysians and Iraqis aged 18 years and above who currently consume DS. Using the SurveyMonkey® platform, data were collected from 2425 respondents (response rate = 60.6%), with analysis carried out using SPSS version 28.ResultsDemographically, the sample had an almost equal distribution of Malaysians (51%) and Iraqis (49%), with a mean age of 30.61. The majority had tertiary education (78.6%), and only a fraction had been infected with COVID‐19 (26.2%). Concerning knowledge, a significant portion exhibited poor understanding (84.2%) of DS's functioning and implications. Regarding habits, many respondents consumed multivitamins (75.2%), with influence largely coming from peers (23.5%) and product leaflets (46.7%). Belief‐wise, about half (49.2%) utilized herbal or supplemental products as a protective measure during the pandemic, with vitamin C with zinc being the most commonly used (45.4%).ConclusionThe study underlines a significant inclination towards DS usage in Malaysia and Iraq, influenced by societal connections and available information. While many believe in the protective capacities of DS against COVID‐19, a substantial knowledge gap persists. It emphasizes the need for evidence‐based awareness campaigns and policies to guide public health decisions.
Knowledge and attitude towards antibiotic use and resistance among Arab population: A questionnaire-based study of 11 countries from the Middle East and North Africa Bassam Abdul Rasool Hassan, Ali Haider Mohammed, Watheq Mohammed AL-Jewari, Ali Blebil, Juman Dujaili, et al. Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research, 2023 Objectives Antibiotic usage has evolved over the years among the Arab population, and it has also gone under misuse resulting in the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Therefore, the current study aimed to address this issue by evaluating the level of knowledge and attitude of Arab population towards antibiotic usage and AMR to develop a pathway to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out among Arab population, including 11 countries from the Middle East and North Africa. A validated and translated questionnaire, consisting of 34 questions, was adopted to achieve the study objectives. Two phases of data collection (online and offline) were performed, and SPSS was used for data analysis. Key findings Three thousand three hundred and nineteen participants were successfully recruited, and the mean age was 37.6 ± 11.73. Approximately 63% of participants wrongly answered they should stop antibiotics when they feel better, and 73.3% of them thought antibiotics could treat cold and flu. Nearly half of the respondents indicated that they were uncertain of how antibiotic resistance affects the body (48.1%), and they were unaware if it could affect them or their families (63.1%). While the majority of the respondents were prescribed antibiotics by a doctor, over half of them were not given any advice on how to take them. Our data showed a significant relationship between respondents’ demographic data (e.g. country, age and education) and their knowledge and attitude. Conclusions Participants had poor knowledge of antibiotics and AMR; thus, efforts are needed to conduct health campaigns in public places and create and implement programmes aiming to raise knowledge and awareness of people in the Arab regions. These could aid to curb the risk of antibiotic resistance and increase the chance of successful treatment for infectious diseases.
Stature Estimation among Iraqis Based on Anthropometrics of the Hands Using Multivariable Regression Sinan Subhi Farhan, Ahmed Al-Imam, Watheq Mohammed Al-Jewari Al Rafidain Journal of Medical Sciences, 2023 Background: Estimating stature is of exceptional value in personal identification and the forensic sciences. At the same time, the literature lacks standardized methods for height estimation. Objectives: To estimate the stature of Iraqi individuals based on the morphometric parameters of both hands. Methods: 101 students recruited from Al-Rafidain University College collected data concerning ethnicity, gender, weight, and height and measured fourteen morphometric parameters for each hand, including the hand length (RHL; LHL), palm length (RPL; LPL), hand breadth (RHB; LHB), maximum handbreadth (RHB; LHB), and the length of each finger (RD1,2,3,4,5; LD1,2,3,4,5). A multivariable linear regression is used to predict stature based on the former variables. Results: The sample included males (48.5%) and females (51.5%) aged 18–23 years of Arabic (95%) and Kurdish (5%) ethnicity. The average weight (65.68±1.32) and height (169.52±1.13) were calculated. Regression analysis (accuracy=74.8%, p<0.001) and the male cohort (65%, p<0.001) possessed higher statistical accuracy than females (47.2%, p<0.001). Stature estimation within the total sample and males assumed similarities concerning parameters allocated to both hands that principally included the length of the right hand, right middle finger, left palm, and left little finger. In contrast, females' stature estimation corresponded to morphometric parameters strictly related to the left hand, including the length of the hand, palm, ring finger, and little finger. The results also aligned with the neural network analyses and qualitative data from ChatGPT version 3.5. Conclusion: Multivariable predictive models that are crucial in personal identification for forensic purposes were predicted, such as catastrophic scenarios due to disfiguring accidents, organized crime, and mass graves that frequently occurred in Iraq during the past two decades. Our results could also interest reconstructive hand surgery experts.
Multi-drug Resistant bacterial causes of Meningitis in different age groups Mahmoud. I. S, Altaif. K. I, Hailat I. A, Al-Jewari W. M, Wayyes A Research Journal of Pharmacy and Technology, 2022 This work is aimed to find the common bacteria which causes meningitis in different age groups of patients attending AL-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital and AL-Khadymia Pediatrics Hospital in Baghdad City. It is also targeted to determine the Pattern of the susceptibilities of the bacterial isolates from CSF samples to the commonly used antimicrobials in these two hospitals. Each CSF sample was collected under aseptic conditions by a well trained staff. Transferred soon to the laboratory, All CSF samples were subjected to well-known established microbiological techniques for the final diagnosis of the bacterial isolates. For Antimicrobial susceptibility tests, each bacterial isolate was subjected to the modified Kirby – Bauer method to find out whether an isolate is sensitive or resistant to a certain drug (antibiotic) based on the size of the zone – of growth inhibition as that of the manufacture information. Based on gender, it has been found that S. pneumonia represented the highest number among female group. From the age point of view, it has been found that S. pneumonia and H. influenza represented the highest percentage for the age groups of (5-7) and (8-10) years respectively. From the results of the antimicrobial susceptibility test the overall picture is that of multi – drug resistance of the bacterial isolates e.g H. influenza and N.meningitidis are completely (100%) resistant to Imipenem.

Association of visceral adiposity index, lipid profile, and serum leptin with glucose intolerance risks in Iraqi obese patients: A cross-sectional study SaadAbdulrahman Hussain, WaelWaleed Mustafa, SamerShukur Moahammed, WathiqMohammed Al-Jewari, HusseinSaad Abdulrahman Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences, 2020 Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using visceral adiposity index (VAI), serum leptin, and lipid profile as indicators of impaired glucose tolerance in Iraqi obese patients. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in Iraqi obese patients of both sexes. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), VAI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), serum leptin, and 2-h glucose tolerance test (2-h GT) were determined and compared with those of healthy non-obese control group. A correlation analysis was performed to determine the strength of association between the studied markers. Data were adjusted to determine gender differences in this regard. Statistical Analysis: Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Shapiro–Wilk analyses, Mann–Whitney U test, and unpaired t test were used for the two-group comparisons once applicable. Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation analyses were used to measure the relationship levels between the studied variables. Results: A total of 144 obese patients were included; the mean age was 37.11 ± 8.2 years and 92 (63.9%) were females. Compared with non-obese subjects, the participants had significantly higher levels of BMI, WC, WHR, VAI, TG, leptin, and 2-h GTObese male subjects had significantly higher values of body weight, WC, HC, VAI, and TG compared with obese females. Elevated 2-h GT was significantly associated with VAI (r = 0.291, P = 0.0004), TG (r = 0.319, P = 0.0001), and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (r = 0.435, P < 0.0001) in the obese patients only. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that VAI, TG, and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio can be suggested as potential markers for the risk assessment of impaired glucose tolerance in Iraqi obese patients.
