Effect of Welding Parameters on Microstructure, Mechanical and Corrosion Behavior of AZ31B Mg Alloy Friction Stir Welds N. Hima Silpa, B. Lakshmi Saranya, D. Balaji Naik, K. Srinivasa Rao, D. Vijay Praveen, et al. Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Systems, 2025 Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is ideal for magnesium alloys due to its minimal distortion and enhanced mechanical properties, without needing filler material. It’s environmentally friendly and applicable in industries like aerospace and automotive, making it valuable for weight-critical applications. In the present study, the influence of FSW factors, specifically the effects of axial force, welding speed and rotational speed on the AZ31B magnesium alloy’s hardness and corrosion potential, was investigated. Experiments were conducted according to the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) by using Central Composite Design (CCD) considering Welding Speed, Tool tilt Angle, Tool Rotational Speed and Axial Force as FSW input parameters. Further, the results were analyzed using Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) to identify the optimal combination of high hardness and better corrosion resistance. The results show that the optimal parametric set that influences the responses includes a tool tilt angle of 1.5, an axial force of 6 kN, welding speed of 55 mm/min and rotational speed of 600 rpm.

Krugon Archives of Metallurgy and Materials, 2025 Composite materials offer a versatile and customizable solution for various industries, allowing for innovative designs and improved performance. Magnesium-based composites offer a compelling combination of lightweight, high strength, and other desirable properties, making them valuable materials for a variety of applications. The present study is focused on the microstructural, mechanical and wear characterization of the magnesium based hybrid composites which are developed with different combinations of Al2O3 and B4C microparticulates through stir casting route. The microstructural study reveals the diversity in the particle phase distribution. Composite with 2% Al2O3 and 6% B4C have shown higher hardness (78.5 HV0.2 and 67.3 HV0.2, respectively) and yield strength (273 MPa and 219 MPa, respectively) as compared to the other compositions. Furthermore, pin on disc test was conducted on the developed composites to study the wear and friction behavior. Test results revealed that the composite with 2% Al2O3 and 6% B4C has better wear resistance due to its superior mechanical properties as compared to the other developed composites. The results demonstrated the positive role of reinforcements in the AZ91D alloy, which can be a promising material for manufacturing structures and components in the automotive sector.

Advances in Science and Technology, 2022 The current research paper was focused on investigating the influence of wire electrical discharge machining parameters on machining responses of AA-6082/MoS2/Al2O3 Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites (HMMCs). In this paper, Taguchi L18 (2^1 ×3^4) orthogonal array was adopted to conduct the experiments. From the experimental investigations, it was observed that the electrode wire type, pulse on time, and pulse off time have shown a remarkable effect on the machining responses. Advances in Science and Technology, 2022 Upgrading of reinforcements with suitable combinations in Aluminum-based hybrid metal matrix composites became a key area of research in the current manufacturing era. These advanced materials have enriched Properties like specific strength, wear resistance, and low thermal expansion. With these perceptions, the current research paper was focused on AA-2024/MoS2/Al2O3 HMMCs. Taguchi L18 orthogonal array was adopted to design the experiments. Hybrid composites containing MoS2 and Al2O3 reinforcements were fabricated by the stir casting method. The pin on disk tribometer was used for finding the wear rate and coefficient of friction of prepared composites by considering sliding speed, applied load, and sliding time as wear parameters. Further, the influence of wear parameters on Wear Rate and Coefficient of Friction (COF) was presented. Consequently, the significance of the parameters on wear rate and COF are analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA).
