Trust in news is declining globally and has been for some time a phenomenon that has been amplified in the context of a global pandemic, the rise in anti-media populism, and social and political unrest. Overall, public trust in journalism remains low (44% globally), according to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2021. Building on a growing body of research on predictors of (dis)trust among news audiences, this study examines survey data from the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2021 to explore distrust profiles—comparative profiles of users based on their relative distrust in news in general, news they consume, and news accessed through digital intermediaries like social and search—across distinct news environments: India, South Korea, and the US. We conclude that, across all three countries, there are large segments who either trust everything or distrust everything, suggesting a trust polarization phenomenon. Moreover, the results identify segments of swing trusters, users who trust some news and distrust other types but do not indicate a blanket tendency to trust or distrust everything. Normative expectations about the institution of journalism (i.e., folk theories) seem to be the most powerful factors in explaining the relative likelihood of membership in all profiles, where expectations regarding impartiality, concern about fake news, and fair coverage were important indicators of (dis)trust, with varying degrees depending on the media, political, and technological contexts in which they are situated. These findings suggest that to regain trust, journalists should consider how they can change people’s folk theories when it comes to news by comprehensively taking into account the unique trajectory of a given country’s media system.

• A perspective on BBC television news in India
Ruchi Kher Jaggi and Sushobhan Patankar

SAGE Publications
This provocation gives an overview of the BBC in India in terms of television news. It discusses the BBC's sensibilities in relation to the interests and perceptions of Indian audiences through two methods: one, a review of available secondary literature; and two, brief conversations with media professionals who have previously or currently work with the BBC in India. It briefly comments on the conflicting journey of the BBC in India but argues that despite the colonial legacy and the initial narrative of privileging the imperial voice, the BBC is largely viewed as a fair and impartial news source by Indian audiences.

• Interactive Documentary Filmmaking and Student Engagement With Community

SAGE Publications
This paper describes a curricular project in which a network of media educators, in making a case for the educational and social values of an interactive documentary, integrated it in a media degree program to encourage activism in students and promote civic engagement. The project provides valid and important results in an immediate sense, while also establishing the foundation for strengthening the media curriculum at educational institutions. For educators, this has positive implications, as along with the traditional content we teach, we also strive to increase the awareness of civic issues among our students to make them better citizens.

As per the statistics provided by Statista, Facebook holds 18% market share in the space of online and social media and has over 1, 590 million active users worldwide (Chaffey, 2016). This statistic is interesting to analyze in the Indian context where the total internet penetration is about 28% which means 375 million active internet users, according to the 2016 report by We Are Social. The same report states that 48% of the Indian population uses the internet every day and Facebook is the most active social media platform with 13% of the total users. In this group, users in the age group of 20–29 years comprise 51% of the total users, with a further bifurcation of 38% male users and 13% female users. The aforementioned statistics build a very crucial context for investigating social media behaviors of Indian youth in general. This is also significant to explore the most important topics or subjects that this group engages with on a social media platform like Facebook.
