An important sector of the Ukrainian economy is agriculture, which is based on the fertility of agricultural land, in particular, the land of the western region of Ukraine. Analysis of the structure, fertility of agricultural land, and its monetary valuation can provide insight into its productivity and potential for agricultural development. The purpose of the study is to analyse the structure and fertility indicators of agricultural land in the west of Ukraine, demonstrate their main characteristics, and compare land prices in the western regions of Ukraine. In the study, the materials of the land directory of Ukraine and regional reports on the state of the environment of the west of Ukraine were used, involving analysis and comparison of the state of land resources by the content of humus, mobile compounds of phosphorus and potassium, easily hydrolysed nitrogen, their material and monetary assessment. After analysing the structure of the land fund of the west of Ukraine (13125.5 thousand hectares), it was identified that agricultural land accounts for more than half of the total area (56.1%), and forests and other wooded zones – about a third of the total area (32.8%). Built-up land, open wetlands, open land without vegetation cover or with little vegetation cover, and other land account for less than 10%. Among agricultural land, the largest share is arable land, a little less is hayfields and pastures, and the least is perennial plantations and fallows. The total value of agricultural land in the western administrative regions is markedly different. The highest land value is in Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil regions (1.71 and 1.09 billion USD), and the smallest – in Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia (489.90 and 317.21 million USD). 1420223 shares were leased on the territory of western Ukraine. The largest number of them was leased in Khmelnitsky and Ternopil regions (25.2 and 20.7%), and the smallest – in Zakarpattia (1.0%). Thus, the total area of land cultivated by farmers is 330.8 thousand hectares, the largest in the Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi regions (23.3 and 22.7%). The findings of the study will contribute to the adoption of managerial decisions on conducting efficient agriculture and the preservation of soil fertility of agricultural lands in the region under study. Monetary assessment of these territories is useful for the country’s population in the context of changes in the law on the land market in Ukraine, and in the implementation of an environmentally balanced agricultural policy

The paper presents the findings of a study of species diversity of forests in the Kharkivska Oblast. The study was conducted on the territory of ten forestry enterprises and the State Enterprise Kharkiv Forest Research Station and the Homilsha Woods National Nature Park on an area of 282.3 thousand ha (area is subordinated to the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine). The purpose of the study was to analyse the species diversity and typological structure of forests in the Kharkivska Oblast. The study of species diversity was carried out based on analysis of the subcompartment database of the VO Ukrderzhlisproekt. The plantations were classified by the trophotope on the territory of the research facility in accordance with the main methodological provisions of the Ukrainian forestry and forest typology. A diagrammatic map of forests and dominant species (common oak and Scots pine) was compiled using the MapInfo Professional 12.5 software package and a vector map of 12 forestries in the Kharkivska Oblast. It has been established that 56 species of trees grow in the Kharkivska Oblast. Among these tree species, the predominant ones are common oak (53.4%) and Scots pine (32.7%). The distribution of plantations by trophotope is characterised by certain features. For example, dubrava conditions prevail in the stands (65.6% of the total area covered by forest vegetation), subor forests are 3.5 times less represented, and sudubravas and pine forests are the least common. Among the forest types, the most common are fresh maple-linden dubravas (43.7%) and fresh oak-pine subors (18.9%). The practical significance of the study is that the analysis of species diversity and typological structure of forests must be taken into account during the planning, organisation, and conduct of forestry activities in the Kharkivska Oblast

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the distribution of prevailing forest types within the catchment areas of the biggest rivers in the north-east of Ukraine. During the allocation of the catchment areas of the studied rivers, the MapInfo Professional 12.5 program and the vector map of Ukraine were used. The research covered the forest area (more than 502,000 ha) of the state forest enterprises managed by the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine. The studied area located on the tributaries of the Sula, Psel, Vorskla and Siversky Donets rivers within the Poltava, Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kyiv and Cherkasy administrative regions of Ukraine. The analysis of the forest fund was carried out based on the electronic subcompartment database of the Ukrderzhlisproekt Production Association, using the application software and geoinformation technologies. It was revealed that a large variety of forest types in the tributaries of the Sula, Psel, Vorskla and Siversky Donets rivers as well as the prevalence of fresh fertile maple-lime oak and fresh fairly infertile oak-pine forest types (in 75 tributaries of Psel, Vorskla and Siversky Donets rivers) and fresh fertile maple-lime oak and fresh fertile hornbeam oak forest types (in 20 tributaries of the Sula River) are due to the relief, hydrological and soil-climatic conditions of the studied area, as well as anthropogenic factor. Assuming homogeneous natural conditions, an insignificant number of forest types are formed (up to five). For a large variety of natural conditions, there are at least six forest types that should be taken into account during forest management, along with the characteristics of the catchment areas of tributaries. The analysed data on the total number of forest types in the catchments of rivers would be appropriate to use in the future when creating a single list of forest types for the Left-Bank Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. The prevalence of certain forest types within the catchment areas of tributaries of the Sula, Psel, Vorskla and Siversky Donets rivers directly depends on the soil and climatic conditions, geomorphological structure, relief and anthropogenic influence in the forests. The results should be used in forest management activities to preserve and restore the species diversity of forests within the river catchments.

Abstract The aim of the study was to analyze the origin of oak stands within the catchments of the Vorskla’s tributaries and to describe their state. Covering 60,900 ha, pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) stands prevail and cover 51.1% of the total forest area of 119,200 ha in the catchment areas of the River Vorskla’s tributaries. The way oak stands are distributed in regards to trophotopes points at favourable conditions for their growth, as 81.7% of the area is a fresh fertile oak forest site type. Forest stands aged 41–80 years (39.8 % of the total area) and 81–120 years (50.4%) are prevailing. Natural oak stands cover almost 66.5% and planted ones grow at 33.5%. Distribution of oak stands in regards to the functional categories of forests shows a significant predominance of the protective forests. They cover 46.6% of the total area. The commercial forests cover 23.0%, the recreational ones make 18.8% and the forests with conservational, academic, historical and cultural purpose cover 11.6 %. Distribution patterns of oak forests in the catchments of the River Vorskla’s tributaries should be considered in the forest management in order to conserve their biodiversity and enhancing the performance of important environmental, protective, recreational and other functions. The article contains results of the study on the natural regeneration of Quercus robur and other wood species under the canopy of oak stands and on felling sites. The further research perspectives are a thorough study of the stand characteristics and the typological structure of forests in terms of certain wood species in the catchments of rivers all over Ukraine. It will help developing principles for the catchment and landscape zonation.
