    Atmospheric contaminants from marine-industrial environments could cause corrosion damage on steel A36 usually used in equipment and machinery. Therefore, it is desirable to study the corrosion phenomena in different microenvironments and formulate adequate protection measures. In this study, three microenvironments were selected and categorized according to ISO-12944-2 standard as C5-I and C5-M. Four multilayer-coating schemes were used on each exposure site to evaluate their performance. Corrosion products were analyzed using x-ray diffraction, Raman, and ultraviolet-visible techniques. The results showed that the best system was composed of a flake-filled-epoxy/polyamides/epoxy-siloxane. The results confirmed the influence of atmospheric contaminants on overall behavior from different locations.
  • Durability assessment of a tunnel structure with two-sided chloride ingress—A case study located in a tropical environment

    Reinforced concrete structures are the backbone of the transportation infrastructure. Their structural safety and functional performance are critical to sustaining a globalized economy. Corrosion of steel reinforcement is typically triggered by chloride contamination and carbonation, becoming a primary factor in reinforced concrete deterioration. This paper presents a durability assessment of a tunnel structure located in a tropical marine environment. The condition assessment included visual examination, crack survey, cover depth measurements, half‐cell potential mapping, and concrete coring. The chloride profiles showed that the tunnel walls are subjected to chloride attack from both surfaces, an unusual finding in the literature. A stochastic approach is implemented to estimate the probability of corrosion initiation for chlorides and carbonation, including an innovative model for two‐sided chloride diffusion. The results indicate that two‐sided chloride exposure significantly reduces the corrosion initiation time.

    The environmental impacts of natural aggregates (NA) and recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) production for use in road pavements have been evaluated in this study through an attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) from cradle to gate. Such effort is relevant considering the increasing interest of national agencies in applying recycled aggregates for construction and rehabilitation (C&R) of highway infrastructures. The study used site-specific data from two different aggregate production plants, stationary and mobile, both located in the northern region of Colombia. The stationary facility produces NA, and the mobile plant processes a combination of NA and RCA from the demolition of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements in the city of Barranquilla. The aggregates produced in the stationary facility are generally used as road base and subbase materials, and in the production of PCC, whereas the recycled mobile plant produces aggregate for subbase and road base mainly. Two scenarios were contemplated in the study. The first scenario involved extraction, hauling, and processing of NA. The second scenario involved aggregate (limestone) extraction, hauling, and recycling of RCA, and finally processing the combination of NA with RCA. The environmental impacts related to the production process of both stationary and mobile plants were evaluated using the computer program SimaPro 8.4.0 and the impact assessment method IMPACT 2002+. The results showed that diesel fuel is the principal energy used in both production processes, and is mainly responsible for the negative impact on respiratory inorganics, global warming, and nonrenewable energy. Results were very sensitive to transportation distances.
  • Mechanical properties of Cold Recycled Bituminous Mixes with Crumb Rubber

    Cold mix recycling technologies based on asphalt emulsion have been acknowledged for allowing to reduce the environmental burdens associated with road pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. In fact, mixing and placement are conducted at lower temperatures leading to energy savings, a reduction of asphalt aging, fume and odour releasing, and a general decrease of airborne emissions. However, there are still several concerns related to the high variability of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), the lack of standard mix-design procedures and the fair/low mechanical performance often achieved especially due to poor moisture resistance. On other side, the addition of crumb rubber into hot mix asphalts is considered an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective practice in several countries. Producing bituminous cold mixes containing crumb rubber to develop a “greener” paving material with a performance level comparable to that of conventional materials, represents a great challenge to materials engineering. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation concerning the mixdesign characteristics of cold 100%-recycled asphalt emulsion mixes, using crumb rubber to improve cold recycling engineered properties. Mechanical and volumetric properties were assessed through dynamic modulus and indirect tensile strength on dry and water-conditioned specimens.
  • Experimental evaluation of modified sulfur concrete for achieving sustainability in industry applications

    Portland cement concrete (PCC) has been the most widely used concrete in the construction industry. However, PCC has a short service life under some aggressive environments, leading to the need of costly repairs. The purpose of this research was to implement local materials to produce a modified sulfur concrete (MSC) with better performance in industrial applications. Several modified sulfur concrete mixtures were prepared using natural aggregates from the northern region of Colombia, and sulfur cement by combination of sulfur with a modifier, with the objective of achieving the best performance based on mechanical strength and chemical resistance. To achieve this purpose, an experimental program based on a k-factorial design was used to determine the optimal mix design based on the results of the compressive strength. The mixture presenting the best results was then examined further with standardized tests to determine its physical, mechanical, and chemical properties (compressive strength, abrasion resistance, bulk density, absorption, and chemical resistance). Final results showed that the sulfur concrete mixture is very resistant to chemical attack and an outstanding substitute for PCC. The results indicated that there is no significant loss in weight and no relevant variation in compressive strength after the specimens were immersed in sulfuric acid and sulfate solutions. In addition, similar results were obtained for the slabs located in chemicals plants whose conditions were assessed during a 60-day period of exposure.

    The enhancement of mechanical properties and long term performance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) should be considered as a goal in order to achieve a transport infrastructure really sustainable. However, this issue becomes a difficult task, if conventional HMA are used. In fact, performance of conventional HMA, usually presents poor long term performance and functional distresses related to high and low temperatures, which in turn implies higher maintenance costs and superior carbon footprints. To overcome this weaken, bitumen industry has been developing new polymer modifiers, additives to improve HMA behaviour. One of the techniques most used in developed countries to enhance HMA behaviour is the use of modified bitumen. Modifying the bitumen, and then producing modified HMA requires specific equipment and facilities that may be time-consuming, expensive and hard to manage. For instance, to warranty a successful modifying process, storage and handling of the modified bitumen are issues very complex to handle. On the other hand, producing a polymer modified HMA by adding polymers and additives directly during the bitumen/aggregate mixing process may offer very interesting advantages since the economical, production and sustainability standpoint. This paper aimed to determine the feasibility of the incorporation of fibres and plastomeric polymers into different types of HMA by means of the “dry process” (to add polymers during the mixing of aggregate and bitumen in the HMA plant) to produce polymer modified mixes. Thus, laboratory tests including Marshall Stability, Indirect Tensile Stiffness Modulus, repeated load test and Indirect Tensile Strength test were performed to assess the effect of the inclusion of fibres and plastomeric polymers on mechanical and volumetric properties of selected mixes. Results showed that the modification of bituminous mixtures following the “dry process” could be used to improve the performance and long term properties of HMA.
