“Vous parlez anglais?” “Pas du tout”: cross-cultural challenges faced by Chinese inpatriates in France Mingzhi Huang, Christopher Richardson, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim Journal of Global Mobility, 2025 PurposeChina is playing an increasingly prominent role in global business. However, there has been relatively little research on Chinese inpatriates working in Western countries, particularly in non-Anglo cultural contexts. This study attempts to explore the process of cross-cultural adjustment (CCA) and integration into corporate headquarters of Chinese inpatriates working in France, including the favorable factors that accelerate this process.Design/methodology/approachBased on a qualitative, single-case study of Group X, a pseudonym for a French multinational enterprise, the authors drew on semi-structured interviews with 18 Chinese inpatriates and investigated their CCA and integration process at the French headquarters of their employer.FindingsThe CCA and integration process of Chinese inpatriates at the French headquarters includes three stages: honeymoon and/or crisis period, adjustment and/or integration period and mutual growth period. Chinese inpatriates mainly face language barriers and Sino-French cross-cultural challenges. They overcome these challenges by learning the language and culture of the host country and using co-cultural and cross-cultural Guanxi. Experiences vary, with some Chinese inpatriates bypassing the honeymoon and/or crisis stage and entering directly into the adjustment and/or integration stage and some even leapfrogging both initial phases to attain a stage of mutual growth. Favorable factors for this CCA and integration acceleration include experience of living abroad, the host country language proficiency, organizational service support and the English working environment.Originality/valueThe study enhances the theoretical framework of Chinese expatriates’ psychological adjustment process through two key contributions. First, it enriches the three stages by incorporating new aspects, namely the honeymoon facet at the crisis stage, the integration into the headquarters facet at the self-adjust stage and the promoting organizational growth facet at self-growth stage. Second, it adds precision to the horizontal timeline by incorporating two additional initial points for the adjustment and integration process. Until now, Chinese inpatriates and the French context have received little attention, and this research takes a step forward by illuminating the CCA and integration process of Chinese inpatriates in this non-Anglophone country.
Perceived Human Resource Management Practices and Intention to Stay in Private Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia: The Role of Organizational Citizenship Behaviour Hafinas Halid, Daisy Mui Hung Kee, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim Global Business Review, 2024 Addressing the problem of lecturer turnover in Malaysia, this study investigated the motivations behind the intention of employees to stay in private higher education institutions (PHEIs) in Malaysia, with a focus on the relationship between the perceived practices of human resource management (HRM) and the intention to remain at Malaysia’s PHEIs. Based on the social exchange theory (SET), this article proposed that the perceived HRM practices at those institutions are uniquely positioned to support employee intention to stay, particularly with the intervention of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB). Data from 323 lecturers working at PHEIs in Malaysia confirm this model. Based on the analysis, this study revealed that recruitment and selection; training and development; and rewards and recognition all had a meaningful relationship with the intention to stay. In contrast, notably, performance appraisal did not have any significant relationship with the intention to stay.
Factors Influencing the Intention to Use Human Resource Information Systems Among Employees of SMEs in Iraq Al Qaysi Hamid Hazim Majid, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Ai Ping Teoh, Alhamzah Alnoor Data and Metadata, 2024 Introduction:In light of technological development and digital transformation, today's Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) rely heavily on their ability to use technology to succeed. Employees' acceptance or rejection of modern technology and the factors affecting it are crucial topics for SMEs. Methods:This study investigates the moderating roles of Technology Readiness (TR), Experience (EX), Trust, and Voluntariness of Use (VU) on the relationship between Effort Expectancy (EE), Performance Expectancy (PE), Social Influence (SI), Task-Technology Fit (TTF), Facilitating Condition (FC), and the Intention to Use (ITO) Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) among employees of SMEs in Iraq. Data from 304 employees of Iraqi SMEs will be collected. Statistical analysis will be performed using SPSS and Partial Least Squares (PLS). Results:This research provides insight into the reasons behind employees' resistance to adopting HRIS, supporting the organization's policy of developing employee skills and training them in information technology systems. Discussion:Additionally, evaluating the acceptance of information technology systems can develop the framework for technical services in companies, including human resource units. Furthermore, defining the model's architecture will update stakeholder knowledge and enhance human resource management services in Iraq
Perception of nudge interventions to mitigate medication errors risk in healthcare service delivery Keng Sheng Chew, Say Keat Ooi, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Shirly Siew-Ling Wong, Vanitha Kandasamy, Shin-Shin Teo BMC Health Services Research, 2023 Background Conventional cognitive interventions to reduce medication errors have been found to be less effective as behavioural change does not always follow intention change. Nudge interventions, which subtly steer one’s choices, have recently been introduced. Methods Conducted from February to May 2023, this study aimed to determine the relationships between perceived effectiveness and perceived ease of implementation of six nudge interventions to reduce medication errors, i.e., provider champion, provider’s commitment, peer comparison, provider education, patient education and departmental feedback, and the moderating effects of seniority of job positions and clinical experience on nudge acceptability. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling was used for data analysis. Results and discussion All six nudge strategies had significant positive relationships between perceived effectiveness and acceptability. In three out of six interventions, perceived ease of implementation was shown to have positive relationships with perceived acceptability. Only seniority of job position had a significant moderating effect on perceived ease of implementation in peer comparison intervention. Interventions that personally involve senior doctors appeared to have higher predictive accuracy than those that do not, indicating that high power-distance culture influence intervention acceptability. Conclusion For successful nudge implementations, both intrinsic properties of the interventions and the broader sociocultural context is necessary.
Unveiling the obstacles encountered by women doctors in the Pakistani healthcare system: A qualitative investigation Ali Raza, Junaimah Jauhar, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Ubedullah Memon, Sheema Matloob Plos One, 2023 In Pakistan, women outnumber men in medical colleges with 80 percent enrollment, yet many fail to practice medicine following graduation. Pakistan Medical Council (PMC) states 50 percent of graduated women doctors either did not practice or left employment in a short period. Thus, the non-servicing women doctors are assumed as the one of the major causes for the overall doctors’ shortage in the country. Addressing this enduring matter, this study aims to explore and understand the factors that discourage women doctors from practicing medicine in Pakistani hospitals. The study employed qualitative exploratory inquiry with an interpretive paradigm to attain a deeper understanding of the problem. 59-semi structured interviews were conducted by non-working women doctors across the entirety of Pakistan. The narratives were then analyzed by thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti 22. The findings have resulted in the three major themes, i.e., workplace challenges, socio-cultural obstructions, and familial restrictions that possibly obstruct women from practicing medicine in hospitals. The findings suggested that accepting traditional cultural values, including entrenched gender roles in society, deters women from practicing medicine. The prevailing patriarchal societal system includes stereotypes against working women; early marriages hinder women from practicing medicine. The prevailing societal system upholds the influence of in-laws and a husband for women doctor professional employment. As a result, severe work-life conflict was reported where most women doctors ended up in their profession in the middle of struggling between socially rooted gender roles as homemakers and their professional careers—furthermore, the study found various workplace issues that posit an additional burden on already struggling women doctors. Issues include poor recruitment and selection process, transfer constraints, excessive workload with inadequate salary, harassment, gender discrimination, unsafe work environment, and little support from the administration highly contribute to the shortage of women doctors in Pakistan.
Determinants of continuous intention to use e-government services: an extension of technology continuance theory Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Ghazanfar Ali Abbasi, Mohammad Iranmanesh, Nwakaji Christopher, Azlan Amran Journal of Systems and Information Technology, 2023 Purpose Despite the fact that the success of e-government services is contingent on their continuous usage, the continuance intention to use e-government services has received extremely little scholarly attention. This study aims to investigate the determinants of the residents’ continuous intention to use e-government services. Design/methodology/approach The research model was developed based on the integration of technology continuance theory along with trust, transparency and habit constructs. The authors adopted a survey approach to collect the data. The data were collected using an online questionnaire from 260 residents of Penang in Malaysia. Findings Results revealed that transparency has a positive effect on both perceived usefulness and trust. Contrary to earlier studies on e-government, perceived ease of use was found to have no significant relationship with residents' perceived usefulness. Similarly, the results also demonstrated that habit was not significantly related to users’ continuous intention to use e-government services. This study also applied importance-performance analysis map analysis and discovered that perceived usefulness has the highest impact on continuous intention to use e-government services, whereas satisfaction was found to have the least effect. Originality/value This study used an integrative framework and presented an in-depth knowledge of the basic aspects that contribute to the post-adoption usage process and resident satisfaction, trust and attitude towards e-government services.
JOB RESOURCE AND JOB PERFORMANCE AMONG PHYSICIANS IN THE JORDANIAN HEALTH SECTOR: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF JOB SATISFACTION Samer Jibril Qaralleh, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Christopher Richardson International Journal of Professional Business Review, 2023

Purpose: Individuals, groups, and organizations are all affected by job performance. Many challenges face the organization such as job performance across the globe as well as in Jordan. The present study aims to investigate how job resources affect a hospital physician’s performance, as well as the role of job satisfaction in mediating these relationships.
Theoretical framework: The key idea behind this research will be the focus on job demands-resources theory (JD-R). However, a lack of studies that explore the JDR, and job performance in the Jordan context.
methodology: The information was gathered through a questionnaire of 346 physicians who work at Jordan's Ministry of Health. In this paper, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to assess and evaluate the offered hypotheses.
Findings: The study found that five core elements of job resources (skill variety, task identity, performance feedback, autonomy, and job security) have a significant positive correlation with job satisfaction, while one core element (task significance) was insignificant. Furthermore, job resources were shown to have a significant indirect relationship with job performance, with job satisfaction acting as a mediator.
Research, Practical & Social implications: The findings of this paper show that the JDR can accurately forecast physicians. The findings can be used as a foundation for future research in this field. The findings of the study will help the Jordanian government design policies to support and encourage physicians in the current work environment.
Originality: This paper is a ground-breaking effort to see if job demands resources may be used as a theoretical framework to predict physician performance.

Determinants of Intention to Use e-Wallet: Personal Innovativeness and Propensity to Trust as Moderators Madugoda Gunaratnege Senali, Mohammad Iranmanesh, Fatin Nadzirah Ismail, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Mana Khoshkam, Maryam Mirzaei International Journal of Human Computer Interaction, 2023 This study aims to investigate the determinants of intention to use e-wallets. Drawing on the technology acceptance model (TAM), the conceptual framework was developed. The study extends the TAM in the context of e-wallets, by testing the influences of product-related factors namely perceived compatibility, perceived risk, and perceived emotions and investigating the moderating impacts of personal innovativeness and propensity to trust. To conduct an empirical study, the data were collected from Malaysian individuals with no experience with e-wallets using an online survey. Data from 374 participants were obtained and analyzed using the partial least squares technique. The results showed that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived risk, and perceived emotions significantly influence intention to adopt e-wallet. Although personal innovativeness negatively moderates the effect of perceived compatibility on intention to adopt, it moderates positively the influence of perceived emotion. Propensity to trust moderates positively the impacts of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use and moderates negatively the influence of compatibility on intention to use e-wallets. The study extends the literature by extending the TAM in the e-wallet context and testing the moderating effect of personal innovativeness and propensity to trust. The findings enable e-wallet service providers, marketers, and policymakers to consider target market and personal-related factors in developing an e-wallet platform and promoting its usage.
The impact of business process reengineering on organizational performance during the coronavirus pandemic: moderating role of strategic thinking Nur Shahira Shahul Hameed, Yashar Salamzadeh, Noor Fareen Abdul Rahim, Aidin Salamzadeh Foresight, 2022 Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of business process reengineering on organizational performance in the Malaysian electronics manufacturing industry during the coronavirus pandemic. It also studied the moderating effect of strategic thinking on the relationship between these two concepts. Design/methodology/approach Data of 103 samples are obtained from a survey of the electronics manufacturing companies listed in the Federation of Malaysia Manufacturers’ directory. Data is analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. Findings The results show that business process reengineering dimensions, i.e. top management commitment, organizational readiness for change, information technology capabilities and people management have significant positive impacts on organizational performance; whereas organizational structure and other abovementioned dimensions were found to have a much stronger impact on organizational performance whilst strategic thinking exists in the organization. Practical implications As the studied firms have been affected by the pandemic, the results will be useful for managers of the firms in the Malaysian electronics manufacturing industry by highlighting the dimensions of business process reengineering that can have a positive and significant impact on the organizational performance and by advising them to incorporate strategic thinking. Originality/value The results extend the literature on business process reengineering dimensions, which impact organizational performance by empirically testing the relationship of those dimensions on the performance, with strategic thinking as a moderating variable in Malaysian electronics manufacturing companies. From the knowledge, studying strategic thinking as a moderator in the relationship between business process reengineering and organizational performance in electronics manufacturing companies in Malaysia is unique, especially during a global crisis, i.e. the pandemic.
