Exploring Anatomical and Chemical Markers to Characterize and Differentiate Among Bidens Species Carolina Sabedotti, Isabella da Silveira, Izabel Pietczak Migacz, Luiza Stolz Cruz, Ana Carolina Terso Ventura, Paulo Vitor Farago, Claudio Augusto Mondin, Vijayasankar Raman, Edy Sousa de Brito, Paulo Riceli Vasconcelos Ribeiro, Flávio Luís Beltrame, Jane Manfron Revista Brasileira De Farmacognosia, 2026 Bidens pilosa L., Bidens alba (L.) DC., and Bidens subalternans DC., Asteraceae, are often misidentified because of their morphological similarities. The present study provides a comparative analysis of the morpho-anatomical characteristics, histochemical, and chemical fingerprints obtained by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry for these three species. Light microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize diagnostic structures. Histochemical assays and LC-MS were applied to obtain chemical information from leaf, stem, and root extracts, and multivariate chemometrics including principal component analysis were used to classify the datasets. The morpho-anatomical and histochemical analysis allowed the identification and differentiation of the three species; also, the LC-MS analysis revealed that the main compounds in Bidens extracts are phenolics, and using chemometrics methods was possible to discriminate by species and plant parts. Together, these complementary approaches provide a robust basis for distinguishing closely related Bidens species and support more reliable pharmacognostic identification. Graphical Abstract

Although crossflow microfiltration is well established for fruit juices, its application to whole coconut water and the influence of membrane material on flow, fouling behavior, and retention of bioactive compounds remains poorly understood. Addressing this gap is critical for optimizing clarification processes while preserving nutritional and functional quality. Here, three membrane types (silicon carbide – SiC, aluminum oxide - Al 2 O 3 , and polypropylene - PP) are tested under identical operating conditions (ΔP TM , temperature, crossflow velocity, and membrane area) and are benchmarked for permeate flux, fouling propensity, and retention of key bioactive compounds. The results indicate that ceramic membranes deliver superior clarification performance, with SiC exhibiting the highest permeate flux (>300 L h -1 m -2 ), surpassing PP and Al 2 O 3 by ≈400% and ≈90%, respectively. The SiC system also shows the lowest specific energy consumption (0.48 ± 0.02 kWh m -3 ) and minimal alteration of coconut water’s natural composition. In closed-loop mode, ceramic modules exhibit concentration polarization as the primary resistive contribution, whereas polypropylene is dominated by fouling and shows the highest irreversible resistance among the membranes. Chemometric analyses (NMR and ICP-OES) reveal that the SiC permeate maintains an organic and mineral composition closest to that of whole coconut water. Considering permeate flux, energy efficiency, and product quality together, SiC membranes represent a technically and economically viable option for potential industrial-scale clarification of coconut water. • Crossflow microfiltration clarifies whole coconut water while preserving bioactives. • The SiC system has the highest flux and lowest energy use (>300 L h -1 m -2 ; ≈0.48 kWh m -3 ). • Flux decline is dominated by cake resistance rather than pore blocking. • Chemometrics (HCA-PCA) links chemical composition to fouling/resistance metrics. • The clarified SiC system shows minimal changes in sugars, organic acids, and minerals.
Metabolomics-Driven Identification of Resistance Biomarkers in Dwarf Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) under Black Mold Stress João G. da Cruz, Jhonyson A. C. Guedes, Gisele S. da Silva, Lorena M. Zocolo Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, 2026 This study employed an integrated untargeted metabolomics approach to identify resistanceassociated biomarkers in dwarf cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) genotypes under black mold stress-a severe foliar disease caused by Pilgeriella anacardii Arx & Müller. Metabolomic profiling was performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MSE) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This methodology enabled a comprehensive analysis of four dwarf cashew genotypes with varying resistance to P. anacardii: ‘CCP 76’ and ‘BRS 189’ were susceptible, ‘BRS 226’ was intermediate, and ‘BRS 265’ was resistant. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) revealed clear metabolic segregation between resistant, susceptible, and intermediate genotypes, with high predictive power (R2 Y ≥ 0.98; Q2 ≥ 0.95). Resistant clones (BRS 265 and BRS 226) showed pronounced metabolic reprogramming, marked by increased accumulation of flavonoid glycosides (quercetin-3-D-glucoside, isoquercetin), flavan-3-ols ((+)-catechin, gallocatechin), galloylated glucose derivatives (penta- and tetra-O-galloyl-glucosides), and biflavonoids (amentoflavone, agathisflavone). These compounds function as antioxidants, membrane disruptors, metal chelators, enzyme inhibitors, and immune response modulators. Pathway enrichment analysis highlighted the activation of flavonoid and flavonol biosynthesis as central to resistance. Elevated sucrose levels in resistant genotypes suggest a role in energy supply and systemic signaling. Altogether, this metabolomic fingerprint supports a complex biochemical defense strategy and offers robust biomarkers for marker-assisted selection.
Green Coconut Biorefinery: RSM and ANN–GA Optimization of Coconut Water Microfiltration with IntegratedTechno-Economic Analysis José Diogo da Rocha Viana, Moacir Jean Rodrigues, Arthur Claudio Rodrigues de Souza, Raimundo Marcelino da Silva Neto, Paulo Riceli Vasconcelos Ribeiro, José Carlos Cunha Petrus, Ana Paula Dionísio Foods, 2026 The coconut water market continues to expand, but industrial supply is constrained by the high perishability of fresh coconut water and the need for stabilization routes that preserve quality. This study optimized crossflow microfiltration of coconut water using a silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membrane, high permeability, chemical/thermal robustness, and cleanability, and assessed the techno-economic feasibility of a green coconut biorefinery producing microfiltered coconut water and coconut pulp. Pressure and temperature were modeled and optimized using a face-centered design (FCD) and artificial neural networks coupled with a genetic algorithm (ANN–GA), considering permeate flux and fouling index (p < 0.05). Both approaches converged to the same operating point, and experimental validation at 75 kPa and 30 °C achieved 605.32 ± 15.34 L h−1 m−2 and 82.79 ± 1.35% at VRR = 1. Sample-level fit statistics favored ANN (higher R2 and lower sample-level errors), whereas condition-wise grouped cross-validation (leave-one-condition-out) indicated higher predictivity and lower RMSECV for the quadratic FCD/RSM models across experimental conditions, highlighting response-dependent generalization within the investigated domain. Fouling analysis indicated concentration polarization as the main resistance contribution and a flux-decline behavior best described by the intermediate blocking mechanism. A SuperPro Designer® simulation over a 20-year project life indicated economic feasibility under baseline assumptions (Internal rate of return—IRR = 23.80%, Net present value—NPV = US$733,761, payback = 2.96 years), with profitability remaining attractive under ±10% selling-price variation. Overall, the process optimization and modeling outcomes align with the economic case, reinforcing the potential of this biorefinery concept for industrial deployment.

A comprehensive dataset of roadkill locations is essential to evaluate the factors contributing to roadkill risk and to enhance our comprehension of its impact on wildlife populations and socioeconomic dimensions. We undertook a compilation of roadkill records, encompassing both published and unpublished data gathered from road surveys or opportunistic sources. GLOBAL ROADKILL DATA includes 208,570 roadkill records of terrestrial vertebrates from 54 countries across six continents, encompassing data collected between 1971 and 2024. This dataset serves to minimise the collection of redundant data and acts as a valuable resource for local and macro scale analysis regarding rates of roadkill, road- and landscape-related features associated with risk of roadkill, vulnerability of species to road traffic, and populations at risk of local extinction. The objective of this dataset is to promote scientific progress in infrastructure ecology and terrestrial vertebrate conservation while limiting the socio-economic costs.
Phytochemical Composition and Evaluation of Acute Toxicity, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activities of Spondias mombin L. and Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão Ethanolic Extracts Against Vibrio parahaemolyticus Luiz G. Pereira Chemistry and Biodiversity, 2025 Plant‐derived natural products are emerging as promising sources of bioactive compounds against parasites and microorganisms. This study investigated the phytochemical composition, antibacterial and antioxidant activities, and acute toxicity of ethanolic extracts from Spondias mombin L. and Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão. Extracts were analyzed by ultra‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS). Antibacterial activity was tested against Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains, whereas antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH assay. Acute toxicity was evaluated with Artemia salina nauplii. The M. urundeuva extract contained hydrolyzable tannins, gallic acid derivatives, anacardic acids, and agathisflavone, along with phenolic acids and dimeric chalcones, including urundeuvine B, in the stem bark. Only procyanidins were detected in S. mombin extracts. Both extracts exhibited moderate antibacterial activity and promising antioxidant potential, relevant for neutralizing oxidative bacterial defenses through scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), thereby supporting cellular redox homeostasis. The M. urundeuva extract showed the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, 0.625–1.25 mg/mL) and, together with S. mombin, demonstrated bactericidal activity surpassing ampicillin. Low acute toxicity was observed for both extracts (LC50 > 1000 µg/mL), reinforcing their potential safety. These findings suggest that these plant extracts are promising natural alternatives for controlling V. parahaemolyticus in aquaculture systems.

Aqueous extracts from five Brazilian medicinal plants (Lippia origanoides Kunth, Amburana cearensis (Allemão) A.C. Smith, Justicia pectoralis Jacq., Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, and Spondias mombin L.) were evaluated for α-glucosidase and intestinal disaccharidase inhibition; next, they were chemically profiled by UPLC-HRMS. Extracts of L. origanoides, A. cearensis, and J. pectoralis exhibited the strongest activities, attributed to flavonoids, iridoid and cinnamic acid derivatives, phenolic acids, and saponins. Molecular docking identified hyperoside, eudesmic acid and isoquercitrin as their main α-glucosidase inhibitors, respectively. In vitro testing confirmed that isoquercitrin effectively inhibited α-glucosidase (IC50 = 0.09 mg mL−1), showing stronger activity than acarbose. ADME simulations indicated low gastrointestinal absorption but favorable intestinal enzyme-targeted properties, consistent with their pharmacological profiles. Acute toxicity in zebrafish showed low toxicity for L. origanoides and A. cearensis and moderate levels for J. pectoralis, supporting their overall safety. These findings highlight these species as promising sources of bioactive compounds for developing safe, plant-based antidiabetic agents.
