Structural, AC conductivity, dielectric and catalytic behavior of calcium oxide nanoparticles derived from waste eggshells B. J. Madhu, H. Bhagyalakshmi, B. Shruthi, M. Veerabhadraswamy SN Applied Sciences, 2021 Calcium Oxide (CaO) nanoparticles have been synthesized from waste eggshells (ES) as a source of calcium by solution combustion technique using muffle furnace and microwave oven. CaO nanoparticles obtained using muffle furnace (CaO-F) and via microwave oven (CaO-M) were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, AC conductivity and dielectric studies to correlate the physico-chemical behavior. The frequency dependence of AC conductivity, the permittivity (ε′) and dielectric loss tangent (D) studies have been undertaken in the frequency range 50 Hz–5 MHz at room temperature. AC conductivity was found to enhance with an increase in the frequency. The ε′ was found to decrease initially with the frequency and finally reaching a constant value at higher frequencies. The frequency dependence of D was found to exhibit a resonance peak in the studied frequency region. Catalytic activity of CaO-M was correlated with its dielectric behavior.

Polystyrene-ZnO (PS/ZnO) nanocomposite films are synthesized by solution casting procedure. PS/ZnO films are analyzed by XRD, FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The addition of ZnO into the PS film is found to decrease the optical band gap (OBG) from 4.07 eV to 1.86 eV. Frequency dependence of dielectric constant (ε′), loss tangent (tanδ), ac conductivity (σac) and electromagnetic (EM) interference shielding effectiveness (SE) studies have been undertaken on the pure PS and PS/ZnO films. Insertion of ZnO into pure PS polymer matrix is found to enhance ε′, tanδ, σac, and SE considerably. The ε′ and tanδ were reduced with an enhancement in the frequency. σac of PS/ZnO nanocomposites was enhanced with rise in frequency and electrical conduction process in PS/ZnO film is in agreement with an electron-hopping model. EM interference SE is reduced with rise in the frequency. PS/ZnO films were proven as a favorable functional substance for the absorbing of EM waves at lower frequencies.

Synthesis, spectroscopic analysis and electrochemical performance of modified β-nickel hydroxide electrode with CuO B. Shruthi, B.J. Madhu, V. Bheema Raju, S. Vynatheya, B.Veena Devi, G.V. Jayashree, C.R. Ravikumar Journal of Science Advanced Materials and Devices, 2017 In the present work, a modified β-nickel hydroxide (β-Ni(OH)2) electrode material with CuO has been prepared using a co-precipitation method. The structure and property of the modified β-Ni(OH)2 with CuO were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform infra-red (FT-IR), Raman and thermal gravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) techniques. The results of the FT-IR spectroscopy and TG-DTA indicate that the modified β-Ni(OH)2 electrode materials contain intercalated water molecules and anions. A pasted–type electrode was prepared using nickel hydroxide powder as the main active material on a nickel sheet as a current collector. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies were undertaken to assess the electrochemical behavior of pure β-Ni(OH)2 and modified β-Ni(OH)2 electrode with CuO in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. The addition of CuO into β-nickel hydroxide was found to enhance the reversibility of the electrode reaction and also increase the separation of the oxidation current peak of the active material from the oxygen evolution current. The modified nickel hydroxide with CuO was also found to exhibit a higher proton diffusion coefficient and a lower charge transfer resistance. These findings suggest that the modified β-Ni(OH)2 with CuO possesses an enhanced electrochemical response and thus can be recognized as a promising candidate for battery electrode applications.

Shruthi Macromolecular Symposia, 2016 Summary A conducting polymer, polyaniline (PANI)/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple and inexpensive one-step in-situ polymerization of Aniline monomer with Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles, where Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared via simple solution combustion method using stoichiometric composition of nickel nitrate, zinc nitrate and ferric nitrates as oxidizers and urea as a fuel. PANI/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and Thermal gravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Frequency dependence of dielectric constant (ϵ′), dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) and a. c. conductivity (σac) studies have been undertaken on the PANI/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanocomposites in the frequency range 100 Hz–5 MHz at room temperature. Dielectric properties such as dielectric constant (ϵ′) and dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) are found to decrease with the increase in the frequency. Further, a. c. conductivity (σac) of the PANI/Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanocomposites was found to increase with an increase in the frequency. Observed variation in the a. c. conductivity with the frequency has been understood on the basis of electron hopping model.
