    This study focuses on the linguistic, stylistic, and orthographic features of personal correspondence written by members of artisan families between the late 18th century and the 1850s. Through a comparative analysis of manuscript sources, it reveals varying levels of adherence to the contemporary orthographic norm and examines the relationship between educational attainment, school attendance, and the writers’ written competencies. Particular attention is paid to gendered and social determinants that shaped the form and function of letters within both familial and broader societal contexts.

  • Education of Artisans' Daughters in the 19thCentury: Possibilities of Correspondence Research

    Studie se zabývá příslušníky maloměstských řemeslnických rodin, tj. nižších středních vrstev, přičemž středem pozornosti je jejich korespondence. Osobní dopisy těchto osob jsou totiž přímým dokladem úrovně jejich vzdě­lání a zároveň reprezentují vzdělanost řemeslnictva jako sociální skupiny. Korespondence žen a dívek byla analyzována jako zdroj informací (obsahová analýza) a zároveň i po formální stránce. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že manželky a dcery řemeslníků měly nečekaně dobré znalosti pravopisu, dodržovaly zdvořilostní úzus písemného projevu obvyklý v jejich sociálním prostředí a disponovaly slušnými formulačními dovednostmi; rovněž ukazují dopisy jako bohatý zdroj pro výzkum vzdělanostní úrovně této sociální skupiny.
