PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT OF OVAL-SHAPED MINI-CHANNEL HEAT SINKS USING hBN NANOFLUIDS An Experimental Thermo-Hydraulic Analysis Sriharan Govindasamy, Anandhi Palani, Suthan Ramakrishna Pillai, Manoj Elango, Raja Kannan, Nalini Rajaian Thermal Science, 2026 This study experimentally investigates the thermo-hydraulic performance of plain and oval-shaped mini-channel heat sinks using deionized water and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanofluids at concentrations of 0.05% and 0.10%. The influence of Reynolds number, channel geometry, and nanoparticle concentration on Nusselt number, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop, friction factor, and pumping power was quantified. Results showed that the oval mini-channel with 0.10% hBN nanofluid produced the highest thermal enhancement, achieving a 220% increase in Nusselt number and a 240% rise in heat transfer coefficient at Reynolds number 900 compared to plain deionized water. Increasing nanoparticle concentration from 0.05%-0.10% further improved the Nusselt number by 35%, indicating strong particle-driven thermal enhancement. Geometry effects alone contributed an additional 20% improvement, demonstrating the significance of flow restructuring via oval cross-sections. Pressure drop penalties remained moderate, increasing by 11.03% for the oval channel with 0.10% hBN and 7.40% for deionized water relative to plain channels. Overall, the combined effects of optimized channel geometry and hBN nanofluid significantly improved convective heat transfer with acceptable hydraulic losses, establishing oval mini-channels as a superior design for compact high-heat-flux thermal management systems.
Sustainable emission reduction in diesel engines using hybrid nanocatalyst and producer gas-assisted soapstock biodiesel Reda A. Haggam, Mohamed Bechir Ben Hamida, Amr Sayed Hassan Abdallah, Yuvarajan Devarajan, G. M. Lionus Leo, Ravikumar Jayabal, K. Raja, Prajith Prabhakar Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy, 2026 The integration of waste biodiesel, metal oxide nanocatalysts, and gaseous dual‐fuel combustion enhances compression ignition (CI) engine performance and reduces emissions. This investigation has been carried out on soapstock biodiesel (SB) produced from soapstock (waste material of vegetable oil processing), enhanced with a hybrid nanocatalyst of graphene oxide (GO) with titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles at 50 parts per million (ppm). Producer gas (PG), a fuel gas mixture produced through biomass gasification, is also used to facilitate combustion at 4 and 8 lpm in a CI engine. The nano‐enabled fuel blend, B50 (50 SB + 50 D) containing GO/TiO 2 at 50 ppm augmented with PG at 8 lpm also showed superior combustion, performance and emission results. Maximum cylinder pressure increased by 5.6% over diesel, while the heat release rate (HRR) rose by 9.75%, indicating enhanced combustion. The brake thermal efficiency (BTE), representing the capacity of utilizing the fuel energy to produce the mechanical work in the engine, increased by 6.45% and the brake specific energy consumption (BSEC), which is the energy consumption per unit brake power, decreased by 2.73%, indicating better fuel utilization. The analysis of emissions revealed decreases of 41.7% in carbon monoxide (CO), 29.8% in hydrocarbons (HC), and 20.9% in smoke opacity (the amount of soot in the exhaust). Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission was reduced by 6.67% with the nano‐assisted dual‐fuel operation. Results indicate that integrating nanocatalysts and producer gas with waste‐based biodiesel enhances CI engine performance, reduces emissions, and improves sustainability.
Experimental and machine learning based investigation of performance and emission characteristics of a CI engine using fusel oil blends Pathmanaban Pugazhendi, Gopinath Dhamodaran, Raju Munisamy, Murugu Nachippan Nachiappan, Nookaraju B.Ch, Raja Kannan Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2025 This study explores the performance, emission characteristics, and machine learning-based predictive modeling of a compression ignition engine operating on diesel–fusel oil blends. Experiments were carried out at ten engine speeds ranging from 1000 to 3250 rpm under full-load conditions using six blends containing 0%–37% fusel oil by volume. The brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) rose from 296 g/kW h for neat diesel to 358 g/kW h for the 37% blend at 2250 rpm, corresponding to a 20.9% increase, while a 22.7% rise was noted at 1000 rpm. Maximum power output declined from 6.0 kW (diesel) to 5.78 kW (37% blend) at 3250 rpm, accompanied by a 12% reduction in engine torque (ET) at higher fusel proportions. Emission measurements indicated a 15%–20% decrease in nitrogen oxides (NOx) with greater fusel content, whereas carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbon emissions increased by 35% and 18%, respectively. Five machine learning models—extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest (RF), support vector regression, artificial neural network, and multi-layer perceptron, were employed to predict engine parameters using 58 experimental data samples. Hyperparameter optimization through a fivefold cross-validated grid search revealed that XGBoost achieved the highest predictive accuracy, with R2 values exceeding 0.90 for seven of nine target outputs, including 0.94 for BSFC, 0.99 for engine power and NOx, and 0.96 for ET and CO. The RF model exhibited similar reliability, whereas neural networks were less consistent due to data limitations. This hybrid framework effectively minimizes experimental effort by ∼88% while maintaining over 90% prediction accuracy.
Optimization of the convergent-divergent nozzle tip and reducing the acoustic energy Kumaran T, Balaji Elangovan, Swetha S, Raja Kannan, Murugu Nachippan Nachiappan, Sarangapani Palani Turkish Journal of Engineering, 2025 One of the practical components that can be found in aircraft engines, the Delaval nozzle, works to improve the aircraft's performance in terms of its stability and its capacity to manoeuvre at different speeds of operation. This research concentrates on the acoustic behaviors shown by this nozzle during the transition from low rate to sonic speed. The modification of the nozzle tip at various degrees of inclination on the transition velocity is the procedure used to minimize the amount of acoustic energy emitted. The acoustic behavior is analyzed based on the FW-H acoustics model utilized, and the optimization problem is solved using the practical eddy simulation approach in CFD. The acoustic Power, measured in dB, is estimated at various angles on the nozzle tip, and the performance of the Delaval nozzle is used to show how the redesigned nozzle tip affects the nozzle's acoustic behavior.
