Botanical Assistant, BOTANICAL SURVEY OF INDIA
Botanical survey of India
I have obtained M.Sc. in Botany from Kakatiya University and Ph.D. in Botany from Osmania University, Hyderabad. My previous affiliations were with the Forestry and Ecology Division in the National Remote Sensing Centre, Indian Space Research Organization, Hyderabad as a researcher under the supervision of Dr. C. Sudhakar Reddy, Scientist, and he worked on these projects: biodiversity characterisation at landscape level in Rajasthan and the National Carbon Project's long-term forest cover change component. He has more than 14 years of research experience in Remote Sensing and GIS applications in forestry and biodiversity areas with focus on angiosperm taxonomy. He is working as Botanical Assistant in the Botanical Survey of India, Jodhpur (redeployed at DRC, Hyderabad). He has worked on various projects, i.e., Flora of India project, Flora of Shoolpaneshutar Wild Life Sanctuary, Narmada District, Gujarat, Vegetation characterization and floristic studies in Bassi.
Ph.D. Botany
Plant taxonomy, Biodiversity and Conservation, Application of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System in Floristics.
The recent advances in the Geoinformatics transfigured the traditional approaches of inventory and mapping to the spatial survey designs and biodiversity characterisation at various levels.GIS technology can be effectively used in planning field explorations for collecting plants, design and management of in-situ conservation sites, identify ecogeographical gaps in existing ex-situ floristic collections, site identification for germplasm evaluation and regeneration; identifying geographic regions which are likely to contain threatened taxa or habitats of interest.

Quantitative data on patterns of distribution and diversity of grasslands is necessary for conservation planning and sustainable utilization. This is the first study to document and analyse the phytosociological data of grasslands of entire Rajasthan state, India. The data was collected through stratified random sampling method by laying 515 sample plots. The study found 375 species belonging to 188 genera and 46 families. Species diversity (Shannon-Weiner diversity) in seven grassland community types ranged between 2.59 and 3.18. The highest Shannon-Weiner diversity index (H’ = 3.18) was found in "Aristida-Dichanthium" grassland followed by "Sehima-Apluda" grassland (H’ = 3.17). The Simpson diversity index and Similarity index are quite different from each other reveals the uniqueness of these grasslands types. Based on our analysis we are concluding that, saline grasslands and swampy grasslands are narrow-niched and ecologically unique. Analysis showed grasslands of Rajasthan as highly species diverse communities and requires prioritization in the long term conservation planning.
