It's Not Just about the Game: A Study on Attitudes and Motivation of Malaysian Secondary Sports School Students in East Malaysia towards Learning English as a Second Language Nursyaheedah Muhammad Isa, Noor Azlinda Zainal Abidin, Nabila Abdul Malek, Mohamad Hazeem Mohmad Sidik, Safirul Azli Abu Bakar Matec Web of Conferences, 2018 In the past few years, Malaysian athletes have gained international recognition with their impressive, world-record breaking accomplishments. As a result of this, Malaysian athletes are finding themselves being interviewed and giving speeches at local and international events. For professional athletes, there is a need and a duty to be able to communicate their stories and experiences as well as giving real insight and opinions about their performances, confidently, to both local and global audiences. In addressing these audiences, it is important for these professional athletes to be confident and are able to converse well using the English language, especially so when addressing a global audience. However, some Malaysian athletes are facing difficulties in communicating confidently and coherently, especially in English. It is a recognised and acknowledged skill gap in which is believed should be tackled during the formative school years. It is possible that the skill gap stems from a lack of motivation and poor attitude beginning from secondary school. This paper discusses the findings of a study undertaken to investigate these issues further by carrying out a questionnaire survey on the attitudes and motivation of Malaysian secondary sports school students in East Malaysia towards learning English as a second language. The study reveals an overall positive attitude towards learning English by the sports students. In addition, the findings reveal that the sports school students are extrinsically and intrinsically motivated in learning English. The study concludes with recommendations for future research and is expected to make a contribution to the literature of attitudes and motivation especially for but not limited to secondary sports school students.
Digital Board Game: Is there a need for it in language learning among tertiary level students? Zuraina Ali, Mohd Amir Izzudin Mohamad Ghazali, Rosnani Ismail, Nurul Nadia Muhammad, Noor Azlinda Zainal Abidin, et al. Matec Web of Conferences, 2018 The concept of learning while playing to learn language is a pedagogy that can enhance students’ learning interest. In this digital era, the use of board games, for instance, has provided a solution to learning a language. A considerable literature has grown up around the theme of digital board in language learning. Therefore, this paper aims at finding the significance of developing a digital board game for the purpose of vocabulary learning. Fifty-seven (57) students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) were selected as samples using purposive random sampling to collect data for the current study. A questionnaire was employed to explore their needs of a digital board game to learn vocabulary. The findings revealed that digital board game has significant needs among students to learn vocabulary, and further support the idea of using digital board game in language classroom. Majority of them believed that digital board game may provide a significant impact on vocabulary learning. Overall, the current study proves to be particularly valuable to language teachers to incorporate digital board game into their instructional activity. Also, these findings suggest a role for interactive learning in motivating language learner to enrich their vocabulary size.

Word Sense Disambiguation for English Quranic IR System Sabrina Tiun, Hamed Zakr, Masnizah Mohd, Norazlinda Zainal Abidin, Ahmad Irfan Ikmal Hisham Proceedings 2013 Taibah University International Conference on Advances in Information Technology for the Holy Quran and Its Sciences Nooric 2013, 2015 Quranic text Information Retrieval (IR) is quite demanding yet very trivial due to that user will not always use the exact keywords to retrieve the relevant Quranic text (verse). Many have tried to overcome this problem by expanding or reformulating the query entered by users using semantic approaches with resources such as ontologies and thesauri. Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) has been less interest to the IR research community due to the insignificant or very little significant impact on the IR performance. Recently, researchers pay interest on applying WSD to the IR problem due to the intuition that deep semantic analysis on the query process will give good impact on the IR performance. However, we have not seen any articles mentioning the use of WSD for Quranic IR, which we are assuming less or none research on WSD for Quranic IR have been carried out. Thus, this motivates us to explore WSD impact on Quranic IR performance. This paper will describe our on-going project on building an English Quranic WSD at the early stage, which is still at the proposal stage, where we layout what could be the best approach, resources and disambiguation algorithm for Quranic WSD for IR.
