Spatially heterogeneous and neighborhood impacts of deep tubewells on childhood diarrhea in rural Bangladesh Varun Goel, Mark M. Janko, Katerina EB. Beach, Md Yunus, Md Taslim Ali, Md Al Fazal Khan, Md Nurul Alam, A.S.G. Faruque, Paul L. Delamater, Marc L. Serre, Mark D. Sobsey, Md Sirajul Islam, Michael Emch Social Science and Medicine, 2026 Deep tubewells that procure groundwater from deep arsenic-free aquifers are crucial sources of safe drinking-water in rural Bangladesh. However, their health benefits may be heterogeneous and context dependent: inequitable distribution, long collection distances and continued use of unsafe alternatives may increase microbial contamination and diarrheal disease. We examined whether the association between household deep tubewell use and under-five diarrhea varies across space and how neighborhood context helps explain this variation. Prospective diarrhea surveillance was conducted across 19,203 households with under-five children in Matlab, Bangladesh from March 2018 to October 2019. We fitted hierarchical logistic regression models accounting for spatially varying relationships and neighborhood-level measures of deep tubewell use. In non-spatial models, household deep tubewell use is associated with lower childhood diarrhea (Odds Ratio (OR) 0.81, 95% Uncertainty Interval (UI) 0.68-0.96). Accounting for space suggests spatial confounding and that the effect of household deep tubewell use on diarrhea may change based on location. Additionally, there is evidence of neighborhood effects: households in areas where more than 60% of neighbors used deep tubewells had lower odds of childhood diarrhea than those in neighborhoods with lower deep tubewell use (OR 0.72, 95% UI 0.57-0.92), with strongest protection among households that used deep tubewells. Results suggest that despite positive effects, benefits of deep tubewells are unequally distributed, and increasing deep tubewell density can further reduce childhood diarrheal disease burden in rural Bangladesh. This study highlights the importance of incorporating geographic context in the design and evaluation of drinking-water and other population health interventions.
Explorations of mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of AA6063/TiB2/Cr2O3 hybrid composites produced by stir casting Rami Alfattani, Mohammed Yunus Journal of Science Advanced Materials and Devices, 2024 Mechanical and Corrosion characteristics of composite materials made from Aluminum alloys (AA) 6063 supplanting as the material of choice for automotive, aerospace, and marine applications by systematically varying ceramic reinforcements developed through controlled stir cast technique ensuring uniform dispersion are explored. The hardness, density, impact and tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and microstructural characteristics of Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMCs) reinforced with titanium diboride (TiB 2 ) at 7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt% and chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 ) at 3, 6, and 9 wt% were assessed according to ASTM standards. The microstructural analysis revealed a reduction in the growth of reinforcement clusters within acceptable limits. The addition of reinforcements to the matrix resulted in improved tensile strength, ranging from 124.6 to 188.7 MPa, and hardness, increasing from 71.5 to 144.32 VHN. This improvement is attributed to the strengthening or load transfer mechanism facilitated by the reinforcements. Additionally, the impact strength of the composites increased from 11.845 to 21.16 J, while the density showed slight variations. Consistent corrosion tests demonstrated that the chemical and interfacial interactions between the matrix material and the reinforcements significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance, reducing the corrosion rate from 570 to 499 mm/year.
Enhancement of hardness and wear strength of pure Cu and Cu-TiO2composites via a friction stir process while maintaining electrical resistivity Ibrahim A. Alnaser, Mohammed Yunus Reviews on Advanced Materials Science, 2024 The study aims to enhance the hardness and wear of copper and Cu–TiO2-based composites while maintaining high electrical conductivity through friction stir processing (FSP). It assesses the impact of TiO2 volume fractions and groove widths (GWs) on the wear, hardness, resistivity, and microstructure of FSPed Cu and FSPed Cu–TiO2 surface composite. The samples obtained from the stir zone showed an increase in microhardness of the Cu–TiO2 surface composite due to particle refinement, uniform distribution, and efficient sticking of TiO2 with Cu. Furthermore, the wear rate increased with decreasing TiO2 volume fractions in the composite. The worn surface microstructural analysis indicated a transition from harsh to gentle wear with increasing TiO2 volume fractions and GWs. The average grain size reduced significantly in reinforced stir zones compared to pure Cu, and particle size decreased further with increasing groove size. Hardness increased by 25 and 50% compared to unprocessed Cu, but only a negligible increase in electrical resistivity (2.3% Ωm) after FSP.
A review of spark erosion machining efficiency, characterization and optimization techniques for ceramic composites L. Selvarajan, K Venkataramanan, K.P. Srinivasa Perumal, Mohammed Yunus, Rami Alfattani, A. Aravindhan Composite Interfaces, 2024 The domain of material science has made great strides in recent years, especially in the fields of metallurgy and ceramic materials and the production of highly trustworthy, cost-effective and economically useful components for use in many industries. For the production of contours and intricate forms in conductive materials, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is by far the most versatile and cost-effective alternative to standard machining processes. In-depth discussion and analysis of the following topics may be found throughout this review paper study. Surface topography and machining properties are investigated in this literature review to determine the impact of mechanical, chemical, electrochemical, and thermal material removal techniques. Different characteristics of dielectric mediums are also covered. Non-conductive and conductive ceramic composite performance characteristics, surfacetexture, mechanical and electrical qualities and geometrical tolerances are investigated as a function of electrode material. Through the perspective of composite materials, a variety of electrical discharge devices’ performance metrics and properties are compared and contrasted. The performance metrics and characteristics of a wide variety of electrical discharge machines are compared and contrasted in light of the composite materials in order to identify their distinguishing characteristics. EDM research is being conducted on a variety of sophisticated conductive materials, to explore their unpredictable effects on EDM and their specialized applications. Methods for optimizing the study of composite material and their effects on EDM’s numerous aspects include Design of Experiments, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Response Surface Methodology, Taguchi with Grey Relational Analysis, and so on. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) are used to study the topography of a variety of composite materials and the latest optimization strategies are also investigated using a variety of algorithms.
Personal exposure to household air pollution and lung function in rural Bangladesh: A population-based cross-sectional study Shyfuddin Ahmed, Muhammad Ashique Haider Chowdhury, Shirmin Bintay Kader, Mohammad Hasan Shahriar, Bilkis A Begum, Mahbubul Eunus, Golam Sarwar, Tariqul Islam, Dewan S Alam, Faruque Parvez, Rubhana Raqib, Habibul Ahsan, Md Yunus International Journal of Environmental Health Research, 2024 We assessed whether personal exposure to household air pollution [PM2.5 and black carbon (BC)] is associated with lung functions (FEV1, FVC, and their ratio) in non-smoking adults in rural Bangladesh. We measured personal exposure to PM2.5 using gravimetric analysis of PM2.5 mass and BC by reflectance measurement between April 2016 and June 2019. The average 24-hour PM2.5 and BC concentration was 141.0μgm−3 and 13.8μgm−3 for females, and 91.7 μgm−3 and 10.1 μgm−3 for males, respectively. A 1 μgm−3 increase in PM2.5 resulted in a 0.02 ml reduction in FEV1, 0.43 ml reduction in FVC, and 0.004% reduction in FEV1/FVC. We also found a similar inverse relationship between BC and lung functions (9.6 ml decrease in FEV1 and 18.5 ml decrease in FVC per 1μgm−3 increase in BC). A higher proportion of non-smoking biomass fuel users (50.1% of the females and 46.7% of the males) had restrictive patterns of lung function abnormalities, which need further exploration.
