Dual Arnica montana and Ruscus aculeatus Hyaluronic Acid-Modified Nanostructured Lipid Carriers for Accelerated Wound Healing Effect Ioana Lăcătusu, Robert Tincu, Mihaela Bacalum, Diana Lavinia Stan, Ovidiu Cristian Oprea, et al. Antioxidants, 2026 Skin wound healing involves a delicate balance between proliferation and remodelling processes, with significant therapeutic challenges. The present work aimed to investigate the capacity of hybrid lipid nanocarriers carrying a complex phytochemical profile (HA-NLC-ArnicaM and/or RuscusA extracts) to counteract the destructive action of oxidative free radicals and to accelerate wound closure induced on BJ fibroblast cells. The lipid and hybrid nanocarriers have main diameters ranging from 145 nm to 180 nm, electrokinetic potential between −45 mV and −62 mV, and entrapment efficiency of plant extracts exceeding 96%. HA-NLC-plant extracts exhibit an appropriate level of biocompatibility at concentrations < 50 µg/mL. ArnicaM wins the antioxidant contest while RuscusA proved excellent for accelerating the wound closure process. NLCs and HA-NLCs entrapping ArnicaM manifested the highest capacity to neutralise DPPH free radicals, reaching 79.4% inhibition. BJ fibroblast cells treated with HA-NLCs closed the wound more rapidly than NLCs, with cells reaching maximum wound closure efficiency when treated with 12.5 and 100 µg/mL HA-NLC-RuscusA, followed by HA-NLC-ArnicaM-RuscusA. These results facilitate the design of remarkable hybrid lipid nanocarriers, which exploit the emergence of a pharmacological phytochemical’s synergy, and which could contribute to stimulating signalling pathways and promoting appropriate cellular regeneration, needed for wound healing.
Advanced Hybrid Polysaccharide—Lipid Nanocarriers for Bioactivity Improvement of Phytochemicals from Centella asiatica and Hypericum perforatum Ioana Lăcătusu, Mihaela Bacalum, Diana Lavinia Stan, Ovidiu-Cristian Oprea, Mihaela Neagu, et al. Pharmaceutics, 2026 Background/Objectives: Phytochemicals are known to be active contributors to a healthy life, providing valuable wound healing benefits. Methods: This research took an innovative approach that successfully overcame the bioavailability limits of herbal extracts, by entrapping CentellaA with HypericumP in nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) and hybrid hyaluronic acid (HA-NLCs) as valuable formulations with enhanced bioactivity. Results: NLCs and HA-NLCs showed excellent entrapping efficiency values for CentellaA and HypericumP ranging from 89.5 to 95.3%. Co-entrapping of CentellaA:HypericumP in a weight ratio of 4:1 and 2:1 led to diameters of 221.4 ± 2.08 nm for NLC-CentellaA-HypericumP and 220.3 ± 1.74 nm for hybrid HA-NLC-CentellaA-HypericumP. The bimodal calorimetric profile of NLCs contributed to a lower degree of lipid core structural organization. HA-NLC-CentellaA showed the safest biocompatibility behavior with BJ skin cells. Conclusions: The cells treated with NLC-CentellaA exhibited a favorable scratch wound closure and promoted the fastest BJ cell migration. NLC- and HA-NLC herbal extracts remodeled the cytoskeleton of BJ fibroblast cells. The morphological fluorescence changes revealed that the fibroblast cells retained intact their cytoskeleton, characteristic of a viable cell with no obvious stress. An active motility of cells treated with NLCs in the wound area was detected, indicating strong pro-migratory properties; e.g., for NLC-CentellaA, the wound was almost closed after 30 h. Designing NLCs with HA adaptability to reinforce the skin wound healing action represents a desired step for the development of herbal products that meets the challenge of combining the benefits of phytochemicals and nanotechnology to create value-added herbal products.
Antimicrobial Efficacy of Green Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Crataegus monogyna Extract Mihaela Cristina Lite, Roxana Constantinescu, Laura Chirilă, Alina Popescu, Andrei Kuncser, et al. Biomimetics, 2025 Current demands in the field of functional textiles include the integration of specific characteristics, such as self-cleaning, antimicrobial efficacy and possible wound healing properties. Green synthesis of nanoparticles represents a promising strategy to address these challenges, combining biocompatibility and ecological safety with effective antimicrobial and antioxidant performance. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been synthesized using different ratios of Crataegus monogyna extract: AgNO3. Physically stable AgNPs with spherical shape, particle main diameters ranging from 61.9 to 85.4 nm and appropriate polydispersity indices were produced. Crataegus monogyna presented high phenolic content (30.58 ± 2.20 mg/g) and strong antioxidant activity (96 ± 1.6 µmol TE/g). The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, EDX, and XRD analysis. When applied to cotton and wool textiles, the AgNPs adhered uniformly, caused minimal colour change, and exhibited enhanced antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal strains compared to other plant-derived AgNPs, with values between 8 and 13.5 mm. The treated textiles demonstrated strong performance against Staphylococcus aureus with inhibition zones of 11 ± 0.53 for cotton and 13.5 ± 0.42 for wool. These findings highlight the potential of Crataegus monogyna-based AgNPs as effective and fabric-compatible antimicrobial agents.
Ginkgo Biloba and Green Tea Polyphenols Captured into Collagen–Lipid Nanocarriers: A Promising Synergistically Approach for Apoptosis Activation and Tumoral Cell Cycle Arrest Mirela Mihaila, Nicoleta Badea, Marionela Birliga, Marinela Bostan, Madalina Georgiana Albu Kaya, et al. International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2025 Considering the world’s growing interest in health-promoting phytochemicals, the current research investigated the development of a dual-captured Ginkgo Biloba and Green Tea Extract into Collagen-Nanostructured Lipid Nanocarriers (Col-NLC-GBil-GTE) for an enhanced therapeutic efficacy against hepatic, colon or breast cancer. NLC considerably reduced cell viability; the most advanced cytotoxicity profile was determined on human colon adenocarcinoma cells (LoVo) and liver cancer cells (HepG2), e.g., tumor cell viability was 21.81% in the presence of Col-NLC-GBil-GTE, similar to that determined for Cisplatin. Col-NLC exhibited apoptosis in HepG2 and LoVo cells and no significant apoptosis induction in normal HUVECs. A 20% increase in apoptosis for HepG2 cells was registered for 100 μg/mL NLC-GBil-GTE compared to Cisplatin (Cis-Pt), e.g., a 63.4% total apoptosis for NLC-GBil-GTE versus a 52.6 apoptosis induced by 100 μg/mL of a chemotherapeutic drug. According to the cell cycle outcomes, an accumulation of hepatocyte HepG2 tumor cells in the G0/G1 phase was detected upon treatment with 100 mg/mL of NLC- and Col-NLC-GBil-GTE, simultaneously with a drastic decrease in the S phase, which may indicate a cell number reduction that enters in the division cycle. The simultaneous delivery of GBil and GTE by synchronizing their bioactivities offers several advantages; Col-NLC-GBil-GTE can be viewed as a noteworthy strategy for consideration in connection with antitumor therapeutic protocols.
Hybrid Carbohydrate–Lipid Nanocarriers: In Vitro Efficacy Gene-Rated by Association of UV-Absorbers and Raspberry Polyphenols Rich-Fraction Nicoleta Badea, Diego Samayoa, Alina Moroşan, Cristina Ott, Ioana Lacatusu Pharmaceuticals, 2025 Background/Objectives: The study aims to investigate an improved version of lipid nanocarriers (NLCs) (formulated with functional coconut butter and marula oil) by designing hyaluronic acid (HA) decorated NLC co-loaded with dual UVA (butyl methoxy dibenzoyl methane, BMDBM), UVB absorbers (ethyl-hexyl-salicylate, EHS) and a Raspberry rich polyphenols fraction (RPRF) for development of more natural NLC-based to-pical formulations. Methods: Quality and quantitative attributes of classic- and HA-NLC have been assigned based on particle size, electrokinetic potential, encapsulation efficiency, spectroscopic characteristics, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. To establish the performance profile of antioxidant activity, release of active substances, sun blocking action, and photostability, in vitro studies were conducted. Results: NLC with an average size of ~150 nm and zeta potentials < −39.5 mV showed 80% and 93.1% of encapsulation efficiency for BMDBM and EHS, and up to 83% for natural RPRF. A long-lasting release of absorbers, with a maximum cumulative release of 2.1% BMDBM and 4.6% EHS was detected. NLC-UV Abs-RPRF-HA assured 72.83% radical scavenging activity. The IC50 for HA-NLC-UV Abs-RPRF was 6.25-fold lower than NLC-UV Abs-HA, which reflects the greater free radical scavenging action. The conditioned NLC–UV Abs-RPRF-HA cream was able to provide a sun protection factor value of 52 and UVA-PF value of 81, which underlines an impressive removal of both categories of UVA and UVB radiation. A significant photoprotective upregulation, four-fold for the topical formulation with NLC-UV Abs-RPRF-HA, resulted after a simulated irradiation process. Conclusions: HA decorated-NLC-conditioned creams might provide a useful platform for developing na-tural and sophisticated dermal delivery systems, for influencing skin permeability, and for synergistically imparting antioxidant and photoprotective actions to cosmetic pro-ducts.
Antimicrobial treatment based on green silver nanoparticles applied to textile heritage MIHAELA-CRISTINA LITE, RODICA ROXANA CONSTANTINESCU, NICOLETA BADEA, LAURA CHIRILĂ, DOINA TOMA, et al. Industria Textila, 2025 Nanomaterials science expanded its application in various directions (biomedical, smart materials, sensors, optoelectronics, etc.). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been intensively tested within the textile department and demonstrated antimicrobial activity when applied under various forms (commercial colloidal nano-silver, in situ synthesis, etc.). The application of silver nanoparticles for historical artefacts conservation has been addressed, and several papers have reported the use of such treatments for cultural heritage conservation. In this work, the historical sample tested consisted of a cotton fabric, part of a priest’s costume, dating back to the 18 th century, provided by the Church of Saint Nicolae “Dintr-o Zi”, located in Bucharest. The piece was treated with AgNPs-based treatment, which was phyto-synthesised by using a plant aqueous extract. The effect of the treatment on the sample was examined by studying fibres of the fabrics with electronic microscopy (SEM) and by quantifying the modification of the sample appearance, using chromatic parameters measurements. The antimicrobial activity was tested against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria strains, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and the fungal strain Penicillium hirsutum. The layer of silver nanoparticles was uniformly distributed on the surface of the historical textile fibres. The changes in the appearance of the textile were minimal, with a total colour difference of 2.11. Evaluating the antimicrobial activity, superior antifungal performance was observed against the Penicillium hirsutum strain (for which the inhibition zone value was 12.5 mm). The FTIR spectrum demonstrated that the integrity of the textile fibre is maintained following the application of the treatment.

Hybrid Albumin-Decorated Lipid-Nanocarrier-Mediated Delivery of Polyphenol-Rich Sambucus nigra L. in a Potential Multiple Antitumoural Therapy Robert Tincu, Mirela Mihaila, Marinela Bostan, Daniela Istrati, Nicoleta Badea, et al. International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2024 The current research attempted to address the suitability of bioactive Sambucus nigra extract entrapped in albumin-decorated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) as a promising “adjuvant” in improving tumour penetration for multiple antitumour therapy. The new hybrid albumin-decorated NLCs were characterised based on, e.g., the particle size, zeta electrokinetic potential, SambucusN entrapment efficiency, and fluorescence spectroscopy and tested for different formulation parameters. The antioxidant activity of NLC-SambucusN was significantly enhanced by a bovine serum albumin (BSA) polymer coating. According to the real-time cell analysis (RTCA) results, NLC-I–SambucusN–BSA behaved similarly to the chemotherapeutic drug, cisplatin, with cell viability for LoVo tumour cells of 21.81 ± 1.18%. The new albumin–NLC–SambucusN arrested cancer cells in G1 and G2 cycles and intensified the apoptosis process in both early and late phases. An advanced induction, over 50% apoptosis in LoVo colon cells, was registered for 50 μg/mL of NLC-II-SambucusN-BSA, a fourfold increase compared to that of untreated cells. RTCA and flow cytometry results showed that concentrations of the hybrid NLC–SambucusN up to 50 μg/mL do not affect the proliferation of normal HUVEC cells. This approach provides insightful information regarding the involvement of phytochemicals in future therapeutic strategies. Albumin-decorated NLCs can be considered a noteworthy strategy to be connected to antitumour therapeutic protocols.
