An Investigation on the Morphological and Mineralogical Characteristics of Posidonius Floor Fractured Lunar Impact Crater Using Lunar Remote Sensing Data Imen Ben Salem, Manish Sharma, P. R. Kumaresan, A. Karthi, Fares M. Howari, Yousef Nazzal, Cijo M. Xavier Remote Sensing, 2022 Lunar floor-fractured craters (FFCs) are a distinguished type of crater found on the surface of the Moon with radial, concentric, and/or polygonal fractures. In the present study, we selected the Posidonius FCC to explore the mineralogy, morphology and tectonic characteristics using remote sensing datasets. The Posidonius crater is vested with a wide moat of lava separating the crater rim inner wall terraces from the fractured central floor. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s (LRO) images and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data were used to map the tectonics and morphology of the present study. The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) data of Chandrayaan-1 were used to investigate the mineralogy of the region through specified techniques such as integrated band depth, band composite and spectral characterization. The detailed mineralogical analysis indicates the noritic-rich materials in one massif among four central peak rings and confirm intrusion (mafic pluton). Spectral analysis from the fresh crater of the Posidonius moat mare unit indicates clinopyroxene pigeonite in nature. Integrated studies of the mineralogy, morphology and tectonics revealed that the study region belongs to the Class-III category of FFCs. The lithospheric loading by adjacent volcanic load (Serenitatis basin) generates a stress state and distribution of the fracture system.
Spectral Characterization of Vaporum Dark Mantling Deposits and Surrounding Region Using Chandrayaan-1 Moon Mineralogy Mapper Kumaresan P R, Saravanavel J 2021 IEEE India Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Ingarss 2021 Proceedings, 2021 Vaporum Dark Mantling Deposits (V-DMD) is one among the regional pyroclastic deposits sites on the lunar surface. The V-DMD is easily identified in optical images by its dark albedo. It is situated in southwestern edge of Mare Vaporum basin lies near side of the Earth’s Moon. This region is evidences of ancient fire fountain volcanism and enriched in ferrous, titanium, ilmenite and volcanic glasses. The newer hyperspectral data sets helps in unraveling their spectral character/signature and mineralogy. The Chandrayaan-1 Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) 83 bands were extensively utilized for visualizing, analysis and interpretation of visual and near infrared portion of electromagnetic spectrum. PCA was performed and RGB color composite image was generated using first three bands. Spectral parameters such as band center, band width and band position were considered. V-DMD spectra shows minor and combined absorption in 1000 and 1250 nm along with broad 2000 nm absorption. Likewise prominent lunar features they also possess positive continuum slope but lower reflectance value than highland and mare surfaces in 540 to 3000 nm wavelength is reason for its lower albedo and darker tone.
