  • Sound waves in a tube: Measuring sound pressure profiles using smartphones

    We present an experiment designed to study standing waves in a tube with one closed end. Two smartphones are used, one to emit a sound signal with a chosen frequency and another equipped with a microphone to detect the sound pressure level inside the tube. Due to the finite diameter of the tube, the standing wave node (or antinode) appears slightly outside of its opened end so the end correction is applied. Results show a good agreement with the theory, making this proposal suitable to be applied to secondary school classes. It is a low cost experiment and has the potential to increase the understanding of this physical phenomenon by secondary students.
  • Smartphones and the Acoustic Doppler Effect in High School

    Experiments using smartphones allow for teaching physics concepts in a fun and engaging way and including interdisciplinary approaches. The exploratory character of the experimental activities, along with the smartphones’ embedded technologies, when applied in the high school classroom, also has the potential to awake the students’ intrinsic motivation, contributing to more meaningful learning. Here, using two smartphones running free apps and a personal computer for data analysis, we present an experiment proposal to quantitatively study the acoustic Doppler effect in secondary schools. One of the smartphones acts as the sound source (SS) emitting a wave signal in a frequency range audible to the human being. The other one acts as the sound receiver (SR). We measured the Doppler frequency due to the relative movement between the smartphones and got good results with this frequency deviating about 1% from that one emitted by SS. This amount is large enough to be detected by SR and allows the teacher, quantitatively, to explain the physical phenomenon to the students.
  • Studying the specific heat of sand with an Arduino board

    We present a sequence of two physics experiments, designed for use with secondary students, which investigate the specific heat of sand, both qualitatively and quantitatively, without a calorimeter. We use two LM35 temperature sensors and an Arduino prototype board for data acquisition. The results are good and allow teachers to discuss the behaviours of water and sand in the heating and cooling processes. Our proposals are suitable for use in the teaching of high school students and lead to meaningful learning about this physical property.
  • Polaridade magnética e sensor Hall: uma proposta de experimento para os ensinos fundamental e médio Magnetic polarity and Hall sensor: an experiment proposal for elementary and high school

    Apresentamos uma proposta de montagem experimental utilizando o Arduino e dois sensores Hall a3144 para o estudo da polaridade magnética de fontes de campo magnético. O uso do sensor Hall permite ao professor discutir junto a seus estudantes esse importante fenômeno da física moderna que se alicerça nos conceitos de campo elétrico e magnético. A montagem é simples e de relativo baixo custo, permitindo aos estudantes determinarem a polaridade (norte ou sul) de imãs e eletroímãs, por exemplo. Este experimento, de cunho qualitativo,é aplicável aos ensinos fundamental e médio e pode levar a uma maior concretização de conceitos relativos ao eletromagnetismo e, consequentemente, permitir um aprendizado num contexto de maior significação.
  • Studying Faraday's law of induction with a smartphone and personal computer

    Here we present an inexpensive proposal to experimentally study Faraday’s law of induction. The experiment uses low-cost materials, a computer with a sound card and a smartphone, both running free software. A value proportional to the induced electromotive force is measured with the computer’s sound card and the data related to the magnetic field time dynamics is recorded using the smartphone’s magnetometer. The analysis of the data is made with an electronic spreadsheet. Our proposal is quite suitable to be carried out with secondary school students or even with introductory undergraduate students and allows one to quantitatively study the linear relation between the induced electromotive force and the magnetic flux time rate.
  • Using a computer microphone port to study circular motion: Proposal of a secondary school experiment

    In this work we present an inexpensive experiment proposal to study the kinematics of uniform circular motion in a secondary school. We used a PC sound card to connect a homemade simple sensor to a computer and used the free sound analysis software Audacity to record experimental data. We obtained quite good results even in comparison with the commercial PASCO PS-2103A motion sensor. We show that our experimental set up is suitable to perform experiments in secondary schools and allows the teacher to prove the relationship between angular velocity, the scalar one and the radius of the motion.
