Characterization of Structural Mortars Reinforced with Sisal Fibre, Recycled Rubber and Expanded Vermiculite A.C.G. da Silva, A.G. Oliveira, T.G.S. Righetto, L.S. Batista, A.E. Gomes, et al. Materials Research, 2025 The construction of cisterns — reservoirs specifically designed for the collection, storage, and conservation of water — has emerged as a significant strategy for mitigating water scarcity in arid regions. A widely adopted form of cistern construction involves the use of cementitious composite panels. This study investigates the mechanical properties of cementitious composites incorporating rubber waste, expanded vermiculite, and sisal fibres. Three distinct mortar formulations were developed and evaluated in terms of water absorption, voids index, specific mass, compressive strength, flexural tensile strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and damping factor. Relative to the reference mixture, the incorporation of sisal fibres (SF) in conjunction with rubber and vermiculite resulted in a 12–16% reduction in density, a 29.5–30.4% decrease in the dynamic modulus of elasticity, and a 2.5–9.0% increase in the damping factor. Despite an observed reduction of approximately 40% in compressive strength, the values remained within the acceptable range for structural applications. These findings substantiate the technical viability and environmental benefits of the proposed mortars for the sustainable construction of cisterns.
Push-out tests: connections by adherence in the context of latticed joist slabs Lisarb Henneh Brasil, Hidelbrando José Farkat Diógenes, Maria Isabel Brito Valente, Lays Raianne Azevedo da Costa Revista Ibracon De Estruturas E Materiais, 2024 Composite structures and precast solutions stand out because they lead to simple, fast erected and economic constructions. In steel-concrete composite construction, shear connectors are used to assure the shear transfer between the steel profile and the concrete slab, enabling the composite action to develop. This paper discusses an innovative technology for connection by adherence, whose resistance is due to friction on various steel-concrete interfaces. The authors consider that this type of shear connection is suitable for composite beams with latticed joists slabs, and the study developed intends to analyze the behavior of the proposed connection, in this application's context, through experimental and numerical approaches. For this purpose, push-out specimens were fabricated and tested in accordance with Eurocode-4 requirements, where the connection behavior is analyzed in terms of its load-slip relation, and the failure modes are identified. Experimental and numerical results allowed to induce that the connector by adherence made with a checkered steel plate is appropriate to be used in composite structures, as it exhibits satisfactory shear resistance and ductility performance. Also, specimens with latticed joist slabs presented average load capacity values with the same magnitude as the average load capacity obtained in models with solid slabs, despite being more prone to cracking. From the parametric study, an increase of 100% in the connector height implied strength increase from 16% to 25%, depending on slab type.
Assessment of bioconversion performance after alkaline fermentation process to recover biogas and nutrients Timóteo Silva Ferreira, Tales Abreu Tavares de Sousa, Hidelbrando José Farkat Diógenes, Israel Nunes Henrique, Valderi Duarte Leite, et al. Desalination and Water Treatment, 2022 Alkaline fermentation of two distinct types of waste activated sludge was assessed to evaluate the recovery of by-products, such as nutrients, organic matter as a source of bioenergy, volatile fatty acids, and water. Also, to reduce the amount of solids to be disposed of, and the total management costs. Sludge 1 was from conventional activated sludge, and Sludge 2 was from a sequential batch reactor set for biological phosphorus removal. In the laboratory three different fermentation processes were provided in parallel, treating Sludge 1, followed by Sludge 2. Treatment A was the control, wherein the fermentation process occurred without alkali addition. Treatment B was alkaline fermen- tation with a controlled pH 10 of pre-solubilized sludge, and treatment C was alkaline fermentation at a controlled pH 10. The results indicated that alkaline fermentation significantly reduced the vol- atile suspended solids (VSS) to 45% treating Sludge 1, and to 50% treating Sludge 2, which was significantly improved for both sludges when pre-solubilized achieving 59% and 60%, respec- tively. Also, comparing the biogas production test of treatment A to the other conditions set, both increased almost four, and three times, for B and C, respectively. Orthophosphate, chem- ical oxygen demand, carbohydrates, and proteins in soluble fractions significantly increased under alkaline fermentation compared with the control, and all of these parameters were boosted with pre-solubilization. Comparing both sludges, the one from biological phosphorus removal systems achieved higher VSS reduction, and a significantly higher rate of orthophosphate release.
Tests on composite beams using new connections by adherence Hidelbrando J. F. Diógenes, Ana Lúcia H. C. El Debs, Isabel B. Valente Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers Structures and Buildings, 2018 Cast-in-place concrete is often the cheapest solution in the context of conventional construction. However, prefabrication presents advantages in terms of execution time, quality of the structural elements and cost. The association of precast concrete elements and steel sections in a composite element can thus result in a high-quality structure that is executed with greater speed and economical in both financial and material resources. Currently, steel to concrete composite connections are not completely adapted to prefabricated slabs and the use of connections by adhesion, interlocking and friction seem quite promising. To improve knowledge in this field, this paper presents the development of full–scale flexural tests of composite beams using new interfaces for these connections, and the results of these are interpreted and discussed. For comparison purposes, two beams with cast-in-place slabs were tested. Satisfactory behaviour in terms of strength was observed in both cases investigated (cast-in-place and precast slab), justifying further studies on the subject.
Precast beam-column connection subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings Luiz Álvaro Oliveira Júnior, Daniel Lima Araújo, Mounir Khalil El Debs, Hidelbrando José Farkat Diógenes Structural Engineering International, 2017 This paper addresses the mechanical behaviour of beam–column connections in precast concrete structures designed for use in constructions that demand rigid connections. In the proposed connection, steel-fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC), splice bars and shear keys were used to develop a connection that is resistant to positive and negative moments. The mechanical behaviour of the proposed connection was evaluated using dynamic and reversal cyclic tests under two models: a monolithic model and a model composed of precast concrete elements connected using 1% SFRC and splice bars to establish the continuity of the reinforcements. The results of cyclic tests showed that this precast beam–column connection exhibits semi-rigid behaviour and high strength (88% of the strength provided by the monolithic model). The results from dynamic tests showed that the uncracked connection had an average damping ratio of ~1.0%, decreasing to ~0.7% after cracking.
