  • Securing the future: Navigating blockchain challenges in procurement 4.0 for ensuring food security
Anshu Kumari, Manish Tiwari, Sandeep Jagtap, Bhavin Shah, Vinay Surendra Yadav, et al.
Journal of Global Operations and Strategic Sourcing, 2026
Purpose Blockchain technology (BCT) is a novel and disruptive innovation that can transform procurement processes in various industries, including the food sector. BCT can offer benefits such as transparency, traceability, security, and efficiency for procuring food products, which are essential for ensuring food security and quality. However, BCT faces several challenges that hinder its adoption and implementation in the food procurement domain, potentially impacting food security. Thus, this present work aims to identify the challenges of adopting blockchain technology in food Procurement 4.0 to support food security. Design/methodology/approach Eleven key challenges were identified through a literature search and are validated by domain experts. These challenges are modeled using the “fuzzy-Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation of Laboratory (fuzzy-DEMATEL)” technique. The fuzzy-DEMATEL technique allows us to explore the causal behavior of challenges that help further build strategic action. Findings The findings reveal that “lack of understanding and awareness (BTCP4)” and “immature legal acceptance/ regulatory policies (BTCP2)” are the most prominent barriers. The insights obtained from this work could be utilized by government agencies, policymakers and key industry players to prepare strategies to eliminate the challenges impeding the successful adoption of BCT in Procurement 4.0, thus ensuring food security for all. Research limitations/implications The limitations of this research are listed here, and they can be taken up in future research. This research employed a fuzzy-DEMATEL technique contingent upon experts’ subjective judgments and preferences, which may result in biases and inaccuracies in data collection and analysis. The number of experts is also a serious concern for the present study. Future studies may apply an integrated modeling approach with more experts to realize the results better. Additionally, the readiness assessment for adopting BCT could be done in a contextual setting to understand challenges better. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present work is the first of its kind to navigate blockchain challenges in Procurement 4.0 to ensure food security.
  • ‘No Human Entry’ on Paper: Outsourcing Labour, Implementation Gaps, and Everyday Illegality of Manual Scavenging in India
    Nihal Raj, Manish Tiwari
Journal of Labor and Society, 2026
Manual scavenging, the manual removal of human excreta without protective equipment, remains deeply rooted in India’s caste-based occupational hierarchy despite legal bans under the 1993 and 2013 Acts. Independent research reveals its persistence due to weak enforcement and the limited impact of these laws. This reflects systemic institutional neglect that perpetuates caste oppression and the deprivation of Dalit sanitation workers. Using Braverman’s labour process theory and Michael Burawoy’s concept of manufacturing consent, the paper shows how manual scavenging is reproduced through informal contracts, deskilling, and bureaucratic outsourcing. It further explains how cultural narratives and state-led initiatives, such as the Swachh Bharat campaign and the rebranding of workers as Safai Mitras, legitimise exploitation of manual scavengers in India and conceal structural violence. Based on secondary sources, including legislation, court rulings, surveys, reports, and media accounts, the study highlights the need for structural reforms beyond legal prohibition.
  • The Enduring Legacy of M.N. Srinivas in Indian Sociology: Bridging Academia and Public Discourse
    Anshu Kumari, Manish Tiwari
    Sociological Forum, 2026
Sociology, a discipline that engages academia and the public, has been largely hindered by institutional barriers and disciplinary silos, especially in India. M. N. Srinivas, a pioneering Indian sociologist, played a significant role in bridging this gap through his ethnographic fieldwork and public discourse on caste, social mobility, and rural transformation. His theoretical contributions, particularly Sanskritization and Westernization, reshaped the understanding of caste dynamics and social change in India. This paper critically examines Srinivas's legacy in public sociology, assessing its relevance in contemporary debates on caste, identity politics, and social justice. The study highlights Srinivas's methodological innovations, emphasizing his “field view” approach, which prioritized empirical research over abstract theorization. The paper also sees Sanskritization as a transformative framework and looks into what implications it has for caste mobility and its critics among Dalit scholars. The paper calls for revitalizing public sociology through interdisciplinary research, greater public engagement, and inclusivity. By drawing lessons from Srinivas's work, contemporary Indian sociologists can reaffirm their role in shaping public discourse and social policy.
  • Leveraging Social Capital for Sustainable Dairy Innovation: Strategic Pathways for Cooperative-Led Development in Resource-Constrained Communities
    Anshu Kumari, Manish Tiwari
    Sustainable Development, 2026
The present paper analyzes the role of bonding and bridging impacts of social capital in the willingness of farmers to embrace sustainable dairy innovation using cooperative‐based systems in resource‐limited areas. While prior studies have examined social capital and innovation adoption separately, limited research integrates Social Capital Theory (SCT) and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to explain cooperative‐led dairy innovation in rural, resource‐constrained contexts. Moreover, the mediating mechanisms through which social capital translates into sustainable adoption intention remain underexplored in developing agricultural economies. Based on the TPB and the SCT, the study implements a conceptual model comprising relational and psychological processes of perceived innovation compatibility, environmental motivation, and trust into cooperative‐led business models as mediators. Using survey data from 356 dairy farmers affiliated with cooperatives in Bihar, India, the study employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS‐SEM) to test hypothesized relationships. Results indicate that both bonding and bridging social capital significantly enhance all three mediators, which in turn strongly predict adoption intention. Mediation analysis further confirms that these mediators serve as critical pathways linking social capital to innovation behavior. The findings position dairy cooperatives as social infrastructures that convert community relationships into inclusive innovation outcomes. By integrating SCT and TPB within a cooperative‐led sustainability framework, this study advances theoretical understanding of behavioral adoption and provides practical and societal guidance for strengthening inclusive, environmentally responsible dairy innovation in marginalized rural communities.
  • Universal Human Values and the Pursuit of Well-being in Contemporary Society
    Manish Tiwari, Anshu Kumari
    Journal of Human Values, 2026
In today’s diverse and interconnected world, the relationship between well-being and universal human values requires thoughtful exploration. This study examines how values such as truth, compassion and dignity are interpreted and practised within various communities in Bihar, India. Using a qualitative, multiple-case study approach, it draws on interviews and group discussions emphasizing lived experience, context and ethical principles of respect, consent and confidentiality across religious and cultural contexts to understand how shared ethical ideals shape personal meaning and collective well-being. Grounded in sociological theory and informed by research in psychology and ethics, the study reveals that while core values are commonly upheld, their expression is shaped by local experiences, traditions and challenges. The analysis reflects on the tension between universalism and particularism, showing how values are both shared and culturally distinct. These insights contribute to a richer understanding of ethical living and offer practical relevance for intercultural dialogue, education and inclusive policymaking in pluralistic societies like Bihar and beyond.

  • Impact of digital inclusion, social innovation and social resilience in enhancing firm performance
    Anshu Kumari, Manish Tiwari
    TQM Journal, 2026
Purpose Firm performance (FP) is conceptualized as a composite measure capturing financial growth, market share expansion and operational efficiency, reflecting both strategic and operational outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of digital inclusion (DI) in enhancing FP through the mediating effects of social resilience (SR) and social innovation (SI). While DI is increasingly viewed as a strategic enabler for operational efficiency, stakeholder engagement and long-term growth, empirical research on its impact on FP remains limited. This study seeks to bridge this gap by integrating insights from the DCV, STS and digital transformation literature. Design/methodology/approach The study employs a survey-based research approach to collect data from 217 executives and managers in the dairy and agribusiness sectors in India using a five-point Likert scale. Structural equation modeling (SEM), which involved a quantitative approach, was used to test the hypothesized relationships between DI, SR, SI and FP with SmartPLS. Findings The findings verify that DI is a significant predictor of FP, SR and SI, with stronger effects on SI. Moreover, SR positively influences both SI and FP, with a greater impact on firm success. Additionally, SI and SR were found to be complementary partial mediators of the DI–FP relationship. Originality/value This study contributes to the emerging literature on digital transformation, resilience and innovation by providing empirical evidence of how DI fosters FP. It highlights the need for organizations to integrate digital tools, resilience-building strategies and innovation-driven approaches to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. The findings have significant theoretical and practical implications, offering insights for business leaders, policymakers and researchers in the field of digital transformation and organizational adaptability.

  • Mapping research frontiers in gender and sustainability in agricultural development: a bibliometric review
Anshu Kumari, Manish Tiwari, Rahul Mor, Sandeep Jagtap
    Discover Sustainability, 2025
Gender and sustainability are crucial in agriculture, which remains a significant source of global employment. However, urbanization, industrialization, and technological advancements have reshaped the sector, impacting labor dynamics and gender roles. Traditional agricultural labor faces challenges due to low wages, physically demanding tasks, and unfavorable working conditions. Addressing gender disparities and promoting inclusive work environments is essential for achieving sustainability. According to the ILO (International Labour Office) decent work encompasses productivity and equal employment opportunities for both genders. This study aims to review the literature on gender, sustainability and agricultural development using a bibliometric analysis of Scopus-indexed articles. The findings identify five main research domains: gender dynamics and roles, agriculture and climate change, sustainability and development, human and labor dynamics, and environmental and technological aspects. Additionally, four key scientific communities led the research: Gender studies, agricultural economics, environmental management, and rural sociology. Emerging research trends focus on gender roles in sustainable farming, environmental innovation, and labor governance in agriculture. Spain, the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada lead in knowledge production, contributing significantly to these research domains. This review highlights the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to address the complex issues of gender and sustainability in agriculture. It also specifies a target for expectations research, highlighting that the ILO’s definition of appropriate employment can guide efforts to improve gender equity and labor conditions, ultimately supporting sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
