    Sustainable Futures, 2025
We investigated the impact of media through androids on information gathering, dissemination and reception by examining the perceived usefulness, ease and use of the Channels TV mobile app among busy professionals in Lagos. Using a purposive sampling method, a questionnaire and interview were deployed to gather data from two groups; identified professionals in Lagos who used the Channels TV app on Androids for accessing news and the management staff of Channels TV. Findings revealed that busy professionals who are always on the road transmitting from home to office, find the app convenient and easy to use to use to catch daily news highlights. Also, Channels mobile enhances media convergence through the provision of multimedia media content across multiple channels to satisfy the audience's appetite.
  • Analysis of Self-Reports of Domestic Violence on Social Media by Nigerian Women: Spiral of Silence or Spiral of Revolt
Oluwakemi Elizabeth Akerele, Adesina Lukuman Azeez, Abiodun Adeniyi, Olanrewaju O.P Ajakaiye, Agwu Ejem, Rachael Oluwafemi Ojeka-John
    Howard Journal of Communications, 2025
This study tested the applicability of the Spiral of Silence theory by analyzing self-reported cases of domestic violence on social media by Nigerian women following the death of Osinachi Nwachukwu in April 2022. Using a qualitative approach, the study textualised three purposefully selected self-reported cases and interviewed five survivors selected through a snowballing technique. Findings showed that public outcry and advocacy against domestic violence on social media following the death of Osinachi instigated the self-reported cases as it fostered a positive effect of increased public awareness and shaped survivors’ self-awareness, confidence and efficacy to freely share their experiences. Instead of silence, there was a “Spiral of Social media” breaking the culture of silence, secrecy, familism and fear of isolation. The study concluded that the higher the level of publicness of a contentious social issue, the more diverse the opinions and the more willing people become to express their opinions. The study recommended the need for governments to collaborate with non-governmental organizations and community leaders to create more awareness campaigns in rural traditional communities in Nigeria to educate residents on the negative impact of domestic violence and to stop the stigmatization of victims and survivors.

  • Twitter, civil activisms and EndSARS protest in Nigeria as a developing democracy
Oluwakemi E. Akerele-Popoola, Adesina Lukuman Azeez, Abiodun Adeniyi
    Cogent Social Sciences, 2022
The study examined how Twitter was used to organize the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria. It also investigated the extent to which Twitter has promoted or degraded democracy in Nigeria through its support for enhancing freedom of expression and being a driver of social protests. The study adopted a qualitative approach using in-depth interview. Twenty Nigerian youths were purposely selected across the South-western states of Nigeria through snow balling technique. The study found that Twitter is effective for social protests as witnessed in the #EndSARS protest because it is a magnificent and functional tool that is powerful in creating a strong tie and thick engagement during and after the protest. However, the effect of Twitter is temporal as the ties it can create get weak by the day. The study concluded that Twitter can either enhance or degrade democracy depending on how its users, who are the core driver of change, use it in democratic process.

Access to quality education is still a major bottleneck in developing countries. Efforts at opening the access to a large majority of citizens in developing nations have explored different strategies including the use of multimedia technology. This paper provides a systematic review of different multimedia tools in the teaching and learning processes with a view to examining how multimedia technologies have proven to be a veritable strategy for bridging the gap in the provision of unrestricted access to quality education and improved learners' performance. The review process includes conducting an extensive search of relevant scientific literature, selection of relevant studies using a pre-determined inclusion criteria, literature analysis, and synthesis of the findings of the various studies that have investigated how multimedia have been used for learning and teaching processes. The review examines various case study reports of multimedia tools, their success and limiting factors, application areas, evaluation methodologies, technology components, and age groups targeted by the tools. Future research directions are also provided. Apart from text and images, existing tools were found to have multimedia components such as audio, video, animation and 3-D. The study concluded that the majority of the multimedia solutions deployed for teaching and learning target the solution to the pedagogical content of the subject of interest and the user audience of the solution while the success of the different multimedia tools that have been used on the various target groups and subjects can be attributed to the technologies and components embedded in their development.
