Diagnosis of GHG Emissions in an Offshore Oil and Gas Production Facility Victor Leonardo Acevedo Blanco, Waldyr Luiz Ribeiro Gallo Gases, 2024 This work presents a diagnosis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) platforms for oil and gas production offshore, using calculation methodologies from the American Petroleum Institute (API) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). To carry out this analysis, design data of an FPSO platform is used for the GHG emissions estimation, considering operations under steady conditions and oil and gas processing system simulations in the Aspen HYSYS® software. The main direct emission sources of GHG are identified, including the main combustion processes (gas turbines for electric generation and gas turbine-driven CO2 compressors), flaring and venting, as well as fugitive emissions. The study assesses a high CO2 content in molar composition of the associated gas, an important factor that is considered in estimating fugitive emissions during the processes of primary separation and main gas compression. The resulting information indicates that, on average, 95% of total emissions are produced by combustion sources. In the latest production stages of the oil and gas field, it consumes 2 times more energy and emits 2.3 times CO2 in terms of produced hydrocarbons. This diagnosis provides a baseline and starting point for the implementation of energy efficiency measures and/or carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies on the FPSO in order to reduce CO2 and CH4 emissions, as well as identify the major sources of emissions in the production process.
Machine Learning for Safety in Lithium Battery Energy Storage: A Comprehensive Review Johanna P. Orellana-Iñiguez, Waldyr L.R. Gallo IEEE Andescon Andescon 2024 Proceedings, 2024 Safety in energy storage power plants using batteries is a critically important issue, especially as electrochemical storage technologies are increasingly adopted. However, battery management systems face challenges in accurately collecting data on individual cell status, which hinders effective verification of their performance. In this regard, the use of machine learning techniques emerges as a promising solution by enabling the prediction of lithium-ion battery operating conditions. This study takes an in-depth look at the risks associated with battery misuse and its potential consequences, such as thermal runaway, and explores how machine learning techniques can improve safety by considering factors such as heat generation rate and battery health status at a more detailed and accurate level.
Short-term Load Demand Forecasting with Machine Learning Methods: A Brazilian Case Study Washington S. Alvarez Orbe, Johanna P. Orellana Iñiguez, Cynthia E. Alvarez Orbe, Guilherme Souto Chagas, Waldyr L.R. Gallo 2024 IEEE Pes Generation Transmission and Distribution Latin America Conference and Industrial Exposition Gtdla 2024, 2024 Accurate estimation and characterization of the load demand curve are critical tasks during the planning stage to ensure a secure and efficient power system operation. The aim is to coordinate the energy supply and the electricity market by predicting demand behavior, which must align with the scheduled generation levels at power plants. This paper identifies the most effective methods for short-term load demand forecasting across Brazil’s four regions, each with unique consumption patterns due to their size, using a one-week-ahead direct multi-step approach. The study evaluates the performance of the most representative machine learning methods from different categories, including linear regression (LR), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), gated recurrent unit (GRU), random forest (RF), and support vector regression (SVR). The dataset used includes the measured historical consumption data from Brazil, spanning 2016 to 2023, provided by the national electricity operator (ONS), and considers the four regions of the country. Forecast accuracy is assessed with the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean squared error (RMSE). Results show that MLP and GRU outperform other methods, offering consistent performance across all regions and more reliable error estimates. These findings lay the groundwork for developing more robust tools, possibly through deeper architectures or model combinations.
