Enhancing efficiency and sustainability: a comparative analysis of refrigerants in ethylene BOG re-liquefaction processes Ahmed T. Abd El-Hamid, Ahmed A. Hanafy, Sameh Tawfik, Wael M. El-Maghlany Journal of Engineering and Applied Science, 2025 This paper presents a comparative thermodynamic analysis of refrigerants used in ethylene boil-off gas (BOG) re-liquefaction systems within petrochemical plants, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. The study evaluates refrigerants including R-290, R-744, R-125, R-170, and R-1270 alongside cascade refrigeration systems combining R-744 with R-717 and R-290, using Aspen HYSYS simulations to assess performance metrics such as Coefficient of Performance (COP), compressor power consumption, refrigerant mass flow rates, and total pressure ratios under varying operating conditions. Results quantify that R-1270 achieves the lowest power consumption rate of approximately 60.11 kW per unit BOG mass flow, slightly outperforming R-290, while also requiring significantly lower refrigerant mass flow. Conversely, R-125 exhibits the highest energy demand and refrigerant usage. Cascade cycles demonstrate competitive performance with reduced total pressure ratios and power requirements. These findings elucidate the thermodynamic advantages of selecting specific refrigerants for ethylene BOG reliquefaction, highlighting R-1270's potential for reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. The study's insights provide practical guidance for optimizing refrigeration cycle designs in petrochemical applications, supporting improvements in system performance and sustainability.
Performance enhancement of marine LNG BOG reliquefaction systems via passive diffuser integration: a thermodynamic and economic assessment Hassan A. R. El-Shoubashy, Wageeh. A. El-Askary, Yehia A. Eldrainy, Sameh T. Abdelfattah, Mohamed H. Mohamed Journal of Engineering and Applied Science, 2025 This article presents a novel thermodynamic approach to improve energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of boil-off gas (BOG) reliquefaction systems on marine carriers. The study investigates the impact of installing six stationary diffusers upstream of each compressor within both the BOG and mixed refrigerant (MR) cycles. Simulation using Aspen HYSYS revealed substantial performance improvements: the coefficient of performance (COP) increased by 16.42% (from 0.14 to 0.163), exergetic efficiency (FOM) improved by 16.07% (from 22.4% to 26%), specific power consumption decreased by 14.12% (from 3638 to 3124 kW/[kg/s]), and specific energy consumption declined by 14.85% (from 1.01 to 0.86 kWh/[kg/s]). Additionally, the total heat rejected to seawater increased by 18.19% (from 191.9 to 226.81 kW), and the energy cost for a 10-day voyage dropped by 14.85% (from $9892 to $8423). These gains were accompanied by a 68.48% rise in total plant irreversibility due to increased compressor discharge temperatures. The results confirm that integrating passive diffusers can significantly enhance the thermodynamic and economic performance of marine LNG reliquefaction systems.
