  • CO2 Emissions in Air Transport: A Comparative Study Using Data Envelopment Analysis
Hélio da Silva Queiroz Júnior, Marcos Araújo de Souza Celestino, Carolina Farias Ferreira de Souza, Viviane Adriano Falcão, Flávia de Castro Camioto
    Transportation Research Record, 2024
The international community has been actively addressing the issue of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as evidenced by various initiatives such as Rio 92, Rio +20, the Paris Agreement, and the 2030 Agenda. These endeavors aim to promote sustainability worldwide. While air transport accounts for only 2% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, its projected growth has spurred the exploration of new technologies to enhance aircraft efficiency. Consequently, further studies are necessary to assess the efficiency and impact of air transport on CO2 emissions in most countries. A methodology utilizing data envelopment analysis (DEA) is proposed in this study for this purpose. This methodology correlates the structure and annual air movement of 21 countries with CO2 production, considering it an undesirable output. The clustering method establishes the relationship between DEA efficiency, the number of airports, air traffic movements (landings and take-offs), and annual economic factors such as gross domestic product in these countries. Additionally, a regression analysis is conducted to examine the influence of air transport on CO2 emissions from transport systems. The findings reveal that the U.S. and China exhibit low efficiency as outliers because of their significant economic disparities. Other countries are grouped based on economic similarities, with South American nations such as Colombia and Chile showing lower air traffic movement efficiency compared with economically powerful European countries such as the UK and Germany. However, the impact of air transportation variables on CO2 emissions remains substantial.
  • Efficiency evaluation of sustainable development in BRICS and G7 countries: a Data Envelopment Analysis approach
Flávia de Castro Camioto, Alícia Cristina Pulita
    Gestao E Producao, 2022
In order to measure the impact of the economic growth over the years, the sustainable development concept works to balance three pillars of sustainability - economic, social and environmental. This paper has the objective to compare emerging countries (BRICS) with the most developed countries (G7) by analysing sustainable development. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used, thorugh the variant SBM (Slacks Based Measured) model. The inputs were CO2 emission, percentage of unemployed and energy utilization. GDP and life expectancy at birth were used as outputs. The main result was a global average efficency ranking, having the emerging countries in top positions (India, China and Brazil, respectively). In addition, emerging countries have always stood out in the average of the slacks of each analyzed variable. These results are important in terms of being useful for public policies related to sustainable development, especially: (1) to contribute to the discussions related to evaluating the countries, helping to identify those with the best practices with regard to environmental, social and economic aspects in each group; and (2) to guide policy decisions regarding government incentives to promote the development of efficient countries in terms of economic growth and welfare social without harming the environment.
  • Environmental kuznets curve and the pollution-halo/haven hypotheses: An investigation in brazilian municipalities
Eduardo Polloni-Silva, Diogo Ferraz, Flávia de Castro Camioto, Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto, Herick Fernando Moralles
    Sustainability Switzerland, 2021
There is much discussion on the non-linear relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Additionally, the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on the environment are ambiguous, as both beneficial (i.e., pollution-halo) and harmful (i.e., pollution-haven) effects were found. Therefore, the literature presents no consensus on either of these topics. This is especially problematic for developing regions, as these regions represent growing economies interested in receiving foreign investments, and their CO2-related research is limited. This study aims to understand the impacts of economic growth and FDI on the CO2 emissions of São Paulo state, Brazil. To perform this study, a unique dataset on regional FDI was built, and 592 municipalities were included. The analyses combine linear and non-linear estimations, and the results suggest a non-linear relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and CO2 emissions, along with a negative association between FDI and CO2. Finally, this study discusses possible policy implications and contributes to the international literature.

  • Renewable and sustainable energy efficiency: An analysis of Latin American countries
Flávia de Castro Camioto, Enzo Barberio Mariano, Naja Brandão Santana, Bruno Dantas Yamashita, Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto
Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy, 2018
The rise in energy consumption is a serious problem in the modern world. Therefore, policies to ensure energy efficiency have become a priority for any nation that is looking to develop its economy. Considering that Latin America has shown rapid economic development and plays an important role in the world economy, the objective of this work was to measure and analyze the renewable energy sources and energy efficiency of the Latin American countries, providing information on benchmark countries. Data envelopment analysis, the slacks‐based measure model with variable returns to scale and window analysis were used, and from the slacks provided, the total‐factor energy efficiency, the total‐factor carbon emissions efficiency, and renewable and sustainable energy efficiency indices were calculated. The inputs used were gross fixed capital formation, labor, and energy consumption; and the outputs used were CO2 emissions (undesirable output) and gross domestic product (desired output). The results showed that Brazil is the country with the highest RSEE, followed by Venezuela and Uruguay. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 37: 1901–1907, 2018

International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development, 2015
In the current scenario of economic growth, technological innovation can be used as a promoter of new production alternatives that can be less damaging to nature, which can allow countries to continue to produce without this being considered a threat to society. The main objective of this paper is to analyse the efficiency of the BRICS and of the G7 countries to convert national innovative capacity into economic, environmental and social development, from 2000 to 2008. To this end, we used the window analysis and the triple index of the data envelopment analysis (DEA). This work concluded, considering the variables adopted, that the European countries, especially Italy, France, Brazil and the UK are the most efficient. However, according to the analysis, the USA, China and Russian Federation were the most inefficient.
