  • Unveiling the Influence of Women CEOs, CEO Duality and CEO Compensation on Firm Performance: Evidence from India
Aarti Verma, Mahesh Chand Garg, Shveta Singh
Indian Journal of Corporate Governance, 2025
This article examines the relationship between women chief executive officers (CEOs), CEO duality and CEO compensation on firm performance with upper echelons theory. The final sample of the study comprises 76 Indian non-financial companies listed on the National Stock Exchange from 2019 to 2024. The secondary database CMIE Prowess and companies’ annual reports were used to collect the variables of the study. Both random effects model and fixed effects model were employed for analysis. The results of the study reveal that both women CEOs and CEO duality have a positive but insignificant impact on return on assets (ROA), whereas CEO compensation has a significantly positive association with ROA. Additionally, the results also indicate that women CEOs and CEO compensation have an insignificant association, while CEO duality has a statistically significant and positive association with return on equity. The study is beneficial to policymakers and regulators in making long-run sustainable decisions.
  • An Impact Analysis of Structural Changes and Government Expenditure on Indirect Taxes Post-GST in India: An ARDL Cointegration Approach
Indian Journal of Economics and Development, 2025
The study explored the influence of structural composition, government spending, and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on India's indirect tax revenue. The study employed the ARDL cointegration approach using quarterly data from 2011Q1 to 2023Q4 to identify long and short-term relationships among the variables. It was found that, in the long run, indirect tax revenue benefited from the service sector and government expenditure, but was hindered by trade openness and the implementation of GST. The service sector and government expenditure significantly supported tax revenue in the short run. This research offers valuable insights for researchers and policymakers, serving as a foundation for future studies on GST's regional, national, and international effects. It is one of the first comprehensive analyses on this topic in India.
  • Earnings performance of financial and non-financial IPOs in India: an empirical analysis based on market timing
    Sunaina Dhanda, Shveta Singh
Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting, 2025
Purpose The purpose of this study is to see if market timing predicts the first reporting of earnings performance after the issue, i.e. the issue-year earnings performance. Furthermore, this study examines the behaviour of financial and non-financial issuers’ performance in the light of varied market timings. Design/methodology/approach This study focuses on 785 NSE-listed initial public offerings that took place between April 2010 and December 2021. This study evaluates market timing by using moving averages. Using multiple regression analysis, the research further investigates the impact of market timing on issue-year earnings performance for financial and non-financial issuers on the basis of an interaction (moderation) effect. Findings This study finds that there is a significant presence of market timing in India, which predicts issue-year earnings performance. This study also demonstrates that hot market issuers’ performance is heavily influenced by market timing for non-financial issuers only. However, financial companies are not influenced by market timing. Research limitations/implications The findings of this study will assist the potential investors, analysts and stakeholders about performance of public issuers in India. Lower earnings performance for hot market non-financial issuers implies that the issuers’ market performance may not be supported by earnings figures. A market performance that is not synchronous with earnings will not last long. The findings of this study hold implications to the regulators as well to keep an eye on issuers’ earnings performance alongside the stock performance. Apart from that, the observations in context of financial and non-financial issuers provide insight about the variation in performance of public issues on the basis of background. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the only study to examine earnings performance in the context of market timing in India. This study holds significance in terms of methodology for anticipating the presence of market timing and the study of interaction effects. Moreover, it is one of the few studies that has focused on comparing financial and non-financial issuers around the world.
  • Dynamics of relationship between stock markets of SAARC countries during COVID-19 pandemic
    Vandana Arya, Shveta Singh
Journal of Economic and Administrative Sciences, 2025
PurposeThe paper investigates the dynamic relationship among the stock markets of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachDaily time-series data of four SAARC countries: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, from February 13th, 2013 to March 31st, 2021 are used. The study considers stock prices prior to the blowout of COVID-19 and during the onset of the pandemic. The novel estimation procedure of the autoregressive distributed lag model is used while the results are also confirmed by post-estimation techniques.FindingsThe study confirms that the COVID-19 contagion has adversely influenced the stock returns of SAARC countries. The findings signify that the pattern of cointegration has significantly different regularities in the pattern of causality in the long run and short run during the COVID-19 crisis. Overall, the study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has weakened the dynamic connection among the stock markets of SAARC countries.Practical implicationsTo dampen uncertainties generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the authorities and central banks should be equipped with efficient strategies and guidelines to cope with the crisis created by the pandemic. Further, governments should focus on assuaging the panic faced by investors and enhancing the confidence of domestic as well as foreign investors. Further, the weakened integration of financial markets during the crisis offers opportunities for speculative and arbitrage gains for investors.Originality/valueThe research work is an innovative effort to analyze the impression led by COVID-19 on the SAARC stock markets integration.

  • Financial inclusion growth in Haryana
Indian Journal of Economics and Development, 2021
The present study was undertaken to develop a composite index (Index of Financial inclusion) that shows a general overview of Haryana and ranks different districts of Haryana based on this index. The Wroclaw Taxonomic method was used to construct the financial inclusion index as it addresses assumptions regarding various developmental indicators themselves and their weighting. A further comparison was made between the financial inclusion index for 2010 and 2018 to examine growth over the last decade. The findings showed that financial inclusion in Haryana moved up to firm from above average. However, the state was still finding it difficult to attain its key financial inclusion indicators. The study also found a higher disparity between high and low categories of the stage of development. Only two districts, Gurugram and Panchkula, have higher financial inclusion in all districts of Haryana. Government and other regulatory authorities should expand the network of bank branches and ATMs, especially in rural areas, to have easy access and availability of bank services.
