Adib Hafiizhullah Mohamad Prim Nasir, Mohd Nurazzi Norizan, Nur Izzaati Saharudin, Sumarni Mansur
Journal of Renewable Materials, 2026
Plant-based starch has emerged as a promising natural binder in biocomposites owing to its biodegradability, renewability, and functional adaptability. This study critically reviews the extraction, modification, and performance of starches derived from sources such as corn, potato, and cassava, with particular attention to their calorific behaviour as measured through bomb calorimetry. Calorimetric analysis provides insight into the energy density and combustion efficiency of starch binders, parameters that influence both processing and End-of-life valorisation of biocomposites. Through physical, chemical, enzymatic, and genetic modifications, the inherent limitations of native starch such as moisture sensitivity and low mechanical strength can be mitigated while simultaneously enhancing thermal stability and heat-release characteristics. Among evaluated starches, cassava starch exhibited a comparatively high calorific value of 3661 cal/g (15.3 MJ/kg), confirming its potential for applications in bio-insulation, biofuel, and thermally resilient composites. The integrated understanding of structural modification and calorific response underscores the dual role of starch as both a functional binder and an energetic component, promoting a pathway toward sustainable, energy efficient biocomposite development. - ECOLOGICAL AND HEALTH EFFECTS OF SPENT OILS TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Journal of Sustainability Science and Management, 2026
The utilisation of lubricating oils such as SW 305, hydraulic oils like SW 306, and mineral oils represented by SW 307 is widespread in the realms of industrial machinery, automotive applications and forestry. The environmental release of these petroleum-based oils poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health, challenging the adequacy of existing biodegradability regulations, highlighting concerns even in the face of Malaysian mandates aimed at managing such pollutants. This review focuses on the environmental and health effects of spent oils from these lubricants, highlighting the urgent need for progress in making oils biodegradable and less harmful in Malaysia. Through a detailed examination of current testing methods and regulatory frameworks, it becomes evident that there is a compelling need for enhanced standards and innovative, cost-effective solutions for oil management. The review advocates for a paradigm shift towards the development and adoption of fully biodegradable oils, underpinned by robust regulatory support and the integration of sustainable practices in oil management. By doing so, it calls for immediate, actionable measures to safeguard environmental integrity and public health, promoting a sustainable future through improved management of spent oils. - Removal performance of banana stem activated carbon and derivatives towards carcinogenic dye and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2025
Conventional alkyd resins are widely used for their durability and gloss, but often rely on organic solvents that release harmful volatile organic compounds. In this study, a bio‐based content exceeding 50% ultraviolet (UV)‐curable alkyd resin was synthesized via a solvent‐free, enzyme‐catalyzed process to improve the performance of environmentally friendly coatings. Monoglycerides, glycidyl methacrylate, itaconic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, and succinic anhydride were employed as comonomers to systematically investigate the influence of different anhydride ratios on the properties of the cured films. The results demonstrated that increasing the succinic anhydride content significantly enhanced the flexibility of the films (from 15 to 3 mm), improved adhesion (from grade 3B to 4B), and elevated impact resistance (from 20 to 50 cm). The incorporation of flexible aliphatic segments from succinic anhydride not only improved the film‐forming properties but also enhanced adhesion to hydrophilic substrates. These findings offer valuable theoretical and practical insights for the formulation and application of UV‐curable alkyd resins in advanced functional coatings. - Development of antifouling membranes incorporating graphene oxide-iron oxide nanocomposites for potential Hemodialysis applications

Journal of Porous Materials, 2025
This study presents the development of a novel polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber membrane, achieved through the incorporation of a graphene oxide (GO)-iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) nanocomposite, aimed at enhancing antifouling properties and permeability for hemodialysis applications. The PSf/GO-Fe₂O₃ nanocomposite membranes were produced using a dry-wet spinning technique, employing different ratios of GO to Fe₂O₃ (20:80, 50:50, 80:20) to enhance the performance of the membranes. The successful synthesis and uniform dispersion of GO-Fe₂O₃ nanocomposites within the membrane matrix were confirmed through characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The incorporation of GO-Fe₂O₃ enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membrane and elevated water permeability. Notably, the 80:20 GO-Fe₂O₃ ratio exhibited a remarkable 96% increase in pure water permeability and achieved a 98% rejection rate for BSA. The antifouling properties were also enhanced, as evidenced by a flux recovery ratio of 93% and reduced protein adsorption down to 6.9 µg/cm². Additionally, dynamic ultrafiltration tests confirmed the membrane’s stability and cleaning efficiency across multiple cycles. No leaching of GO or Fe was detected, confirming the nanocomposite’s stability within the membrane matrix. The findings suggest that PSf/GO-Fe₂O₃ membranes may enhance efficiency in hemodialysis by minimizing fouling and improving overall membrane performance. - Utilization of Anhydrides and Monoglycerides for Ultra-Violet Curable Alkyd Resin Preparation via Solvent-Free Enzymatic Process

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2025
ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was to determine the ideal condition for synthesizing bio‐based ultra‐violet curable resin based on itaconic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, succinic anhydride, monoglycerides, and glycidyl methacrylate using solvent‐free enzymatic polymerization with different monomers. Novozym 435 was employed as a biocatalyst in this synthesis process. The resin was mixed with photoinitiator before it was exposed to ultra‐violet radiation for the curing process. As for the ultra‐violet curing process, the dosage of photoinitiator based on the resin and its gel content were also investigated. From the results, it can be said that the ultra‐violet curable resins have been successfully prepared using an enzymatic polymerization technique with a weight‐average molecular weight between 1848 and 2073 at an ideal condition. This could only be achieved when the monomers were exposed to a pre‐reaction at 110°C–120°C for 2.5 h. As for the gel content of the film made of the resin, it could reach above 90% when the dosage of the photoinitiator was fixed at 5%. It is also noteworthy that the used biocatalyst could be recycled and supplemented with a small quantity of new enzyme to achieve the same efficiency of new enzyme at the same amount. - Plastic waste carbonization – a review. Defect and Diffusion Forum, 2025
Some membrane processes, such as organic solvent nanofiltration, require membranes with strong chemical resistance to endure harsh chemical environments. Polymeric membranes, while possessing excellent separation properties, are mostly lacking in this area. Due to its inherent chemical resistance, polyimide (PI) stands out as a highly promising material, with the potential to excel in diverse applications where resilience to harsh environments is essential. Therefore, this study attempts to perform a surface modification on PI membrane via radiation induced graft copolymerization (RIGC) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the monomer, known to further enhance chemical resistance and organic solvent separation of the membrane. The effects of MMA concentration (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 M) and radiation dose (50, 100, 150 and 200 kGy) on the degree of grafting of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and the properties of resultant PI-graft (g)-PMMA membranes were investigated. The PI-g-PMMA membranes were characterized using atomic force microscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle analysis. The interplay between MMA concentration and radiation dose has not only affected the degree of grafting but also the membrane properties. In conclusion, the findings feature the immense potential of the RIGC technique to modify a highly stable PI membrane to survive in demanding applications within harsh chemical environments. - Plastic waste carbonization – a review.
