  • Livelihood challenges in closed tea estates: A case study of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati
    Local Development and Society, 2026
This study explores the livelihood challenges faced by workers in the closed tea estates of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, focusing on Chamurchi, Kathalguri, Redbank, and Surendranagar estates. Fieldwork conducted in July–August 2023, including structured interviews and secondary data analysis, reveals significant socio-economic difficulties due to estate closures. A key issue is the income-expenditure gap, leading to widespread debt and instability. Workers’ attempts to diversify income are often unsuccessful, and exploitative contractual labor conditions are common. The lack of land ownership, alternative income, and skills further deepens poverty. The study recommends securing land rights, implementing skill development programs, and improving access to resources to promote sustainable livelihoods and economic resilience in these communities.
  • Promoting sustainable livelihoods for tribal communities: insights from the integrated tribal development project in Assam
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati
    Development in Practice, 2026
This study evaluates the “Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) Nartap Cluster” in Assam, India, which aimed at improving Scheduled Tribe (ST) livelihoods through rubber cultivation and agricultural diversification. Covering 14 villages, the project increased employment, productivity, and economic opportunities. Women's workforce participation rose from 58.4 per cent to 69.9 per cent, aided by training in rubber production and good agricultural practices. Cultivated land expanded, especially for rubber, while financial access improved through institutional support. Socially, 14 Village Planning Committees and 60 Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) empowered women and strengthened communities. Despite successes, challenges persist, including low adoption of government welfare schemes. The project demonstrates the potential for sustainable rural development but requires further diversification for long-term resilience.

  • Role of traditional institutions in Covid-19 management: A case study of Dorbar Shnong in Meghalaya, India
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati
    Local Development and Society, 2025
With the outbreak of Covid-19, India's focus becomes to prevent the disease from the mass spread. Accordingly, several preventive measures were introduced, including nationwide lockdown. However, despite these preventive measures, the government fails to stop the mass spread of the virus mainly because of the lack of community participation on a large scale. Participation of the community in managing public health can make a difference, as shown by Ebola epidemic management in Sierra Leone. In such context, an attempt is being made in this paper to understand the role of traditional institutions of Meghalaya - a hilly state of North Eastern India, in managing Covid-19.
  • Out-migration from tea gardens and its cause and effect: a case of West Bengal, India
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati
    Development in Practice, 2024
This study examines escalating concerns about out-migration from tea gardens, focusing on Kurti Tea Garden in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, of India. Results from a comprehensive field study illuminate a complex scenario, with only 21.13 per cent of individuals employed and pervasive challenges in promotion prospects. High living expenses, limited livelihood options, and inadequate amenities propel households into debt, prompting migration. South India, notably Thiruvananthapuram, emerges as a preferred destination, especially for the younger demographic. The study provides insights into multifaceted reasons driving migration, stressing the need for holistic interventions, encompassing economic, socio-cultural, and labour-related aspects. It advocates for improved wages, enhanced living conditions, healthcare access, education, and measures to counter deceptive recruitment practices. The study reveals that comprehensive strategies are essential for addressing challenges related to migration-driven hardships in tea gardens. This can be achieved through collaborative efforts involving the government, management, and civil society.

  • Legacy of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi: Swaraj and ethical living
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati, Ramanand Pandey
    Reviews in Anthropology, 2024
In the face of global crises – physical, economic, political, and environmental – Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings provide vital wisdom and strategies. His philosophy as in Hind Swaraj, challenges violence and exploitation, critiquing unchecked modernity, while advocating for sustainable practices aligned with human values. This article explores the relevance of Gandhi’s concept of Swaraj in addressing contemporary issues like poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. By reviewing three key texts on Gandhian philosophy, it underscores the enduring significance of his principles of nonviolence and ethical governance, aiming to inspire societies to adopt his framework for a more just and sustainable future.
  • Sustainability in the study of Gandhian economic philosophy
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati
    Area Development and Policy, 2023
Sustainability is one of the significant development paradigms of the present world because of increasing concerns about environmental deterioration. Sustainability depends on the interaction among various social, economic and environmental factors. Thus, the role of people, resources and technologies become vital. Although people, resources and technologies play an essential role in ensuring sustainability, sustainability is impossible without proper policy intervention. Accordingly, institutions become an integral component of sustainability. Humanity has developed common sustainable goals, yet the way to achieve them remains a critical question for policymakers and a major component of political discourse. In this context, this paper revisits the sustainability components of the economic philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

    Purushartha, 2022
The question of women empowerment consists of numerous nuances. Though the primary perspective continues to be the empowerment of the self, yet the process of self -actualization is largely dependent on a number of other factors including the complex interplay of societal forces and factors. The study of tribal women in the state of Jharkhand, India, provides incisive and rare insights to the process of women empowerment. Studied from the perspective of a women led cooperative society that sought to provide increased income to its members through poultry farming, the study provides a fascinating glimpse to the subsequent changes in the inter personal relationship and self-esteem among the women members..
  • What is in a Name? The Politics of Name Changing
    Bhaskar Kumar Kakati
    Sociological Bulletin, 2022
Various socio-cultural and religious backgrounds influence the naming of an individual. For example, the Hindu belief system shapes the Assamese Hindu’s name in Assam. In contrast, the Islamic belief system shapes Assamese Muslim names, confirming that the personal name of an individual is a significant attribute of identification. It assists in identifying the individual. Equally, it also reveals the bearers’ socio-cultural and religious backgrounds. Therefore, the name directly or indirectly can affect the personal and social life of the individual. As the name can affect the individual’s life, sometimes an individual has to change their name to enjoy social, cultural and political benefits. This article carefully analyses how the name affects the name bearer and why an individual may seek to change his/her name.
