Exposing the Hardness, Morphological and Tribological Behaviors of Alkali-Treated Cissus quadrangularis Stem Fiber and Sugarcane Fiber Hybrid Composites V. C. Sathish Gandhi, N. Sreeraman, R. Kumaravelan, T. Surendiran Polymer Composites, 2025 This study explores the mechanical and tribological characteristics of hybrid composites that incorporate Cissus quadrangularis (CSQ) and sugarcane fibers (SF) in different volume ratios (0:100–100:0) with epoxy resin, emphasizing the impact of alkali treatment. The alkali treatment improved the bonding between the fiber and matrix, increased crystallinity, and refined surface morphology, as evidenced by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. Among the composites, the 20:80 CSQ: SF (S2) demonstrated the highest hardness (86 Shore D), indicating its potential for applications like aircraft interior panels in aerospace and structural flooring in construction. The 40:60 CSQ: SF (S3) composite exhibited the lowest wear rate (1.435 × 10−11 kg/Nm), positioning it as an optimal choice for brake pads in aerospace applications and clutch facings in construction settings. In the meantime, the 100:0 CSQ: SF (S6) composite exhibited outstanding wear resistance, rendering it suitable for lightweight aircraft structures in the aerospace sector and for wear‐resistant coatings in construction applications. Statistical analyses were conducted utilizing Minitab 21, where ANOVA validated the substantial impact of alkali treatment and fiber ratio on the optimization of composite properties.
Investigation of the Effect of Fiber on the Morphological and Mechanical Properties of Chopped Cissus Quadrangularis/Sugarcane Fiber-reinforced Hybrid Composites for Sustainable Applications Sathish Veeramalai Chinnasamy, Narayanan Sreeraman, Radhakrishnan Kumaravelan, Thirugnanasambandan Surendiran Polymer Korea, 2025 The utilization of natural fibers in composites as substitutes for synthetic fibers is gaining traction due to their comparable mechanical properties, cost-effectiveness, and resilience to environmental factors. This study investigates Cissus quadrangularis fibres (CQF) and sugarcane fibers (SF) as potential alternatives for glass, aramid, or carbon fibers in composites. Mechanical tests such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance were conducted on hand lay-up method prepared composites. The significant improvements in strength, with a notable 15.76 MPa increase in tensile strength and a commendable flexural strength of 32.01 MPa for specific fiber compositions. Drop weight testing revealed robustness, with composites sustaining a maximum force of 44N. Preliminary results indicate that the combination of Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) and sugarcane fibers in composite materials can achieve a balance between strength and sustainability. The comparison study shows that the CQF reinforced with Sugarcane fiber and epoxy resin give high tensile and flexural strength than the Cissus quadrangularis powder (CQP) with unsaturated Polyester. It is observed that no significant variation in impact strength for both Fiber and Powder Composites of CQ.
Effect of hybrid filler loading (Polyalthia longifolia seed and graphite) on the mechanical and thermal properties of vinyl ester composites Durairaj Manikandan, Veeramalai Chinnasamy Sathish Gandhi, Radhakrishnan Kumaravelan, Venkataraman Vignesh Polymer Composites, 2024 This research paper focuses on the use of solid biomass waste, specifically a combination of Polyalthia longifolia seed (PLSF) and graphite (GH) powder, as reinforcements in vinyl ester (VE) composites. The composites were produced via the hand layup method, with the filler concentration varying from 0 to 15 wt% of PLSF and 0–9 wt% of graphite. The objective was to examine the influence of the hybrid filler on the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The mechanical properties of composites prepared from P. longifolia seeds and graphite powder were experimentally characterized. These properties included tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and hardness. The hybrid composite had a maximum tensile strength of 48.4 MPa, and its tensile modulus was 1.66 GPa. The hybrid filler at 15% wt% of PLSF and 6% of graphite has the highest flexural strength, which is around 148 MPa. The ultimate impact strength and hardness were measured to be 41.3 kJ/m2 and 44.5, respectively, after the addition of 15 and 6 wt% of hybrid filler. In comparison to neat vinyl ester resin, the PLSF/GH‐VE composites exhibited an increase in tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness of 2.69, 1.82, 3.03, and 1.59 times, respectively. Hybrid composite surfaces were analyzed using scanning electron microscopes to determine surface characteristics and fractured surfaces. In addition, the PLSF/GH‐VE composites have been utilized in the production of components for four‐wheelers.Highlights Investigated the impact of hybrid filler‐reinforced vinyl ester composites. Mechanical and thermal properties were experimentally characterized. Surface characteristics and fractured surfaces were examined. PLSF/GH‐VE composites are used in producing components for four‐wheelers.
Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications of Nanomaterials: Mechanical and Thermal Studies of Polymer Nanocomposites Durairaj Manikandan, Veeramalai Chinnasamy Sathish Gandhi, R. Venkatesan, T. Arun Nellaiappan Exploring Nanomaterial Synthesis Characterization and Applications, 2024 Mechanical and thermal properties of polymer nanocomposites are studied for industrial applications, particularly in automotive and aerospace. Polymer composites with nanoscale fillers have improved mechanical strength, thermal stability, and conductivity. Mechanical properties were tested using tensile, impact, flexural, and fatigue, while thermal properties were measured using TGA and DSC. Composites with nanofillers like carbon nanotubes and metal oxide nanoparticles had improved tensile and impact resistance. High-performance applications require thermal stability and conductivity, which nanocomposites provided. The materials' reduced flammability made them suitable for aerospace applications. Overall, polymer nanocomposites outperform traditional polymers in mechanical and thermal properties. They improve fuel efficiency and sustainability in automotive and aerospace due to their lightweight and durability. Sustainable multifunctional nanocomposites for industrial use should be the focus of future research.
Tribological, Compressibility and Micro Hardness Behaviour of Al7075/SiC Composites G. Karthikeyan, T. Velmurugan, V.C. Sathish Gandhi, G. Elatharasan, S. Thulasi Journal of Physics Conference Series, 2024 The Al7075 with various weight percentages such as 6%, 9%, and 12% of SiC composites were fabricated by stir casting method. The three samples are subjected to a wear test, compressive test, and microhardness test by using a spin-on disc, Universal Testing Machine (UTM), and vicker harness tester machine. From the results, Al7075 with 12% silicon carbide showed better deformation behavior low wear behavior and high hardness strength. These behaviors of more initial fraction density, and high bore presence of silicon carbide reinforcement than others perform. The stress formability index increases with increasing initial perform fraction density at higher silicon carbide. For the composite with lower values of SiC content and with high initial perform density. From these results observed that the percentage of increasing the reinforcement gives better results compared to the lower reinforced alloy.
