Business Innovation and Internationalisation in Female-Owned Businesses: A Fuzzy-set QCA Approach Diana Machado, Aldina Correia, Alexandra Braga, Aidin Salamzadeh, Vítor Braga Journal of the Knowledge Economy, 2025 Female entrepreneurship is increasingly important to create new jobs and contribute to countries’ social and economic growth. This paper aims to examine how innovation and internationalisation interact from a female entrepreneurship perspective. Our research was based on the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method as a means of exploring the causal complexity between female entrepreneurship (condition), innovation, and internationalisation (conditions and outcomes). Our results suggest that female entrepreneurship alone is neither a sufficient nor a necessary condition for the outcome (high internationalisation or innovation). Nevertheless, the results indicate that female entrepreneurship is important in achieving a high level of internationalisation. This study provides policymakers with evidence of the gains of promoting female entrepreneurship in their respective countries. Our study advances knowledge in two ways. It explores the interplay between innovation and internationalisation from the perspective of female entrepreneurship. It applies fuzzy-set methods to the three concepts simultaneously.
SYSTEMIC RISK AND CONTAGION IN THE COMMODITY MARKET: IDENTIFYING VOLATILITY TRANSMISSION DURING CRISIS PERIODS Marek Szturo, Bogdan Włodarczyk, George H. Ionescu, Daniela Firoiu, Vitor Braga Technological and Economic Development of Economy, 2025 The commodity market is a key element of the global economy. It is influenced by the political and economic situation of the major participants on the supply and demand side, as exemplified by the geopolitical and economic situation related to the conflict in Ukraine. Another aspect of this influence is the close relationship between commodity markets and financial markets. Both factors contribute to the possibility of the commodity market becoming subject to contagion, resulting in the transfer of supply and demand shocks and volatility. The aim of this article is to identify the commodities that are the source of contagion (volatility) during the transmission of shocks and the increase of systematic risk in selected periods. Combining traditional network theory with vector autoregression (VAR) model, we aim to estimate systemic linkages as a measure of systemic risk and the contagion process underlying it. We used time series of commodity returns from the Refinitiv Eikon database to observe the relationships between commodities during crisis periods, starting from 2006. The results suggest that the commodities with the largest increase in volatility transmission compared to the pre-crisis period acted as a transmission gate for market shocks.
Work-Family Balance, Digital Leadership Skills, and Family Social Support as the Predictors of Subjective Well-Being of Y-Generation Managers Md. Mizanur Rahman, Aidin Salamzadeh, Leo Paul Dana, Vitor Braga Strategic Change, 2025 Over the past few years, academic scholars have shifted toward paying more attention to work‐family balance, family social support, and subjective well‐being, as these are critical issues for mature employees. Besides, Y‐Gen managers are more concerned about their digital leadership skills, which is also crucial for subjective well‐being. However, for this study, the researchers have constructed the main research variables (work‐family balance, digital leadership skills, family social support, and subjective well‐being) based on the assumptions of spillover theory and conservation of resources (COR) theory. The current study has three distinct objectives: (a) to determine the impact of work‐family balance, digital leadership skills, and family social support on subjective well‐being, (b) to test the mediation effects of family social support in the relationships between work‐family balance, digital leadership skills and subjective well‐being (c) to test the moderation effects of gender on the relationships between work‐family balance, digital leadership skills and subjective well‐being. Using the convenience sampling technique, data was taken from 314 Y‐Gen mid and top‐level managers working in the private sector in Bangladesh. The findings revealed that work‐family balance, digital leadership skills, and family social support positively affect Y‐Gen managers' subjective well‐being. Besides, family social support partially mediates the relationships between work‐family balance, digital leadership skills and subjective well‐being. However, gender does not have any moderation effect on the relationship between work‐family balance, digital leadership skills and subjective well‐being. Therefore, the higher authority needs to focus more on Y‐Gen managers regarding work‐family balance and digital leadership skills.
What innovation and technology delivers to internationalization? The case of European and Central Asia regions José Pereira, Aldina Correia, Alexandra Braga, Wellington Alves, Vanessa Ratten, et al. Journal of Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies, 2025 Purpose This study aims to analyze the impact of technology and innovation on businesses’ internationalization process as well as the relationship between innovation and technology and internationalization. Design/methodology/approach The study was based on quantitative analysis of secondary data from 30 economies in Europe and Central Asia, extracted from the Enterprise Surveys – The World Bank database, using the multivariate statistical techniques of multiple linear regression and cluster analysis. Findings The results suggest that innovation and technology (I&T) mutually and positively influence the internationalization of firms. In this sense, innovative firms are more successful in competing internationally and exposure to alternative business contexts culminates in innovation. The results suggest a positive relationship between the percentage of firms that introduced a process innovation, the percentage of firms with websites and the businesses’ internationalization. Originality/value The originality of this research is based on the methodological approach that allowed the identification of the most significant variables for stimulating the internationalization of firms based on innovation and technology. Given the predominance of economies with higher I&T and internationalization in Europe, it is proposed as future research projects to ascertain the reasons for such a phenomenon.
The speed of internationalization in regionally clustered family firms: a deeper understanding of innovation activities and cluster affiliation Telma Mendes, Vítor Braga, Carina Silva, Alexandra Braga Review of Regional Research, 2025 This article aims to explore how innovation activities and cluster affiliation moderate the relationship between family involvement and post-internationalization speed in family firms. Based on a sample of 639 Portuguese family businesses (FBs) created and internationalized between 2010 and 2018, we show that, all things being equal, higher levels of family involvement in ownership and management lead to a lower post-internationalization speed. When considering the effect of cluster affiliation, we found that clustered FBs have a lower propensity to slow down the post-internationalization process than their non-clustered counterparts. Likewise, when we account for the interactive effect of innovation activities, the results confirm that innovative FBs are less likely to slow down the post-internationalization process compared to non-innovative FBs. In addition, the concern of family firms in developing innovation was particularly pronounced when they belong to clusters. This finding is explained by the existence of socially proximate relationships with other cluster members, based on similarity, trust, knowledge exchange, and sense of belonging, which push family firms to innovate to counteract the detrimental effects of a higher family involvement in the post-internationalization speed. Our study, therefore, stresses the importance of clusters and innovation activities in moderating the relationship between family involvement and post-internationalization speed.
