  • Modular Multilevel Converter Based Advanced Traction Power Transmission Substation for High Speed Railway Network in India
Venkatasupura Vemulapati, Y. N. Vijaykumar, N. Visali, and K. Kumar

    River Publishers
The current power transmission system for Indian railways facing difficulties with voltage unbalance, harmonics and circulation of negative sequence current throughout the power transmission line. In addition, the existence of neutral sections between two adjacent traction substations will cause the speed reduction and is considered as the main limitation for high speed. Traction load is a single phase in nature and it is very difficult to estimate the power flow from adjacent substations to locomotive as well as the location of the train. In this paper advanced common phase traction power transmission system is designed which is much appropriate for high speed railway (HSR) by eliminating neutral sections (NS) and overcome all the fore mentioned power quality (PQ) issues. A simplex algorithm is proposed to estimate the power flow and location of the train. The simulation results are analysed and low scale prototype model is built to validate the simulation outcomes. The results obtained are satisfactory and indicates the system suitability for high speed railway network.

  • Modelling & Analysis of Various control MPPT techniques of Renewable Energy Sources in Micro-Grid
Yn Vijaykumar, Venkatasupura Vemulapati, B Sai Murali, P Naveen, K Satyanarayana, and G. Venumadhav

    IEEE
In this paper, the Fuzzy logic and P and O control algorithms are used to obtain maximum power from the solar energy and wind energy respectively. The main goal to implement the Renewable energy sources is to obtain continuous power and maximum power from natural resources. There are lot of techniques and algorithms to get the maximum power from the renewable energy sources some are easily implement and some are difficult to implement. But, at the end we must focus on efficiency of algorithm and time complexity of algorithm. For increases the output of voltage of the system we add boost converter to system. The total process of this paper will be implementing on the MATLAB/ Simulink environment.

  • Performance enhancement of a high-speed railway supply system with multi module converter: A laboratory prototype model for Indian railways
Venkatasupura Vemulapati, Yerram N. Vijaykumar, and Nagalamadaka Visali

Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science
The present Indian traction supply system’s complications (neutral sections of the catenary line and issues of power quality) restrict the growth of railway transportation, particularly high-speed rail networks that are fast growing globally. The neutral sections (NS) results in loss of speed, momentum and mechanical failures that are all threatening the fast and stable operation of trains and systems. In the meantime, issues with the power quality such as the negative sequence currents (NSC), the reactive power and harmonics may create problems on the three phase grid side that cannot be overlooked. To address these two issues concurrently, a new traction power supply system is designed in this paper. The proposal will also analyses the theory of operation, build the mathematical model and develop the control system for back to back converters. Small scale prototype is also made for validation of simulation results. The results shows that it can fulfil the practical requirements. The experimental results shows that the overall system is practically more appropriate for the high speed railway.

  • Railway Power Supply System using Modular Multilevel Converter with Droop Characteristics
Y N Vijaykumar, Venkatasupura Vemulapati, N Visali, and K. Raju

    IEEE
Indian railway locomotives are fed through singlephase transformers connected to two adjoining phases, this network leads to power quality issues such as voltage distortion, negative sequence currents, high reactive power drawn from the utility grid and harmonics to the three phase grid supply, in addition to that neutral sections (NS) which are present in phase splitting or co-phase supply system causes the speed reduction in locomotives. In this paper three phase grid supply to single phase catenary power transmission system for high speed railway is adopted by using Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC). In order to eliminate neutral sections and to reduce the power quality problems MMC based traction substation (SS) is modelled. MMC centered traction substation and droop characteristics of single phase inverters of two adjacent traction substation is studied and analyzed using MATLAB/ Simulink™.

  • Droop Characteristics based High Speed Traction Power Supply system using Modular Multilevel Converter
Venkatasupura Vemulapati, Y.N. Vijayakumar, and N. Visali

    IEEE
The AC voltage and current imbalance that occurs in the traction system while sudden connection and disconnection of the traction in the single phase supply with transformer interfacing is a serious power quality issue. This paper delivers an alternate topology for the continuous and steady-state supply of power to the AC traction system. The MMC based converter system with the DC link is connected to the self-synchronizing inverters at the AC traction side. MATLAB Simulink™ based simulation is carried out and the droop characteristic based control of the traction side inverter is developed and the results are found to be satisfactory for the traction drive. The specification of the Indian scenario is considered for the simulation thus carried out and results obtained are discussed.
