Advances in thermoplastic polymers for 3D-printed medical devices: Balancing mechanical performance and biocompatibility Vijayan Dharanendran, Rajmohan Thiagarajan, Vijayabhaskar Shivashankar Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, 2026 This study offers a systematic review of the methodology surrounding the use of thermoplastics in three-dimensional (3D) printing for medical applications. Despite 3D printing not being extensively adopted for the creation of clinical medical devices due to safety and legal concerns, recent developments in materials, printing technology, and professional skills have broadened its clinical uses. The use of thermoplastics in 3D printing allows for the creation of economical components with diverse properties and potential applications. For example, literature consistently reports that while PLA-based structures typically exhibit tensile strengths in the range of 50–65 MPa, PEEK-based printed components achieve substantially higher strengths of 90–100 MPa, alongside superior fatigue resistance and long-term biocompatibility, making PEEK more suitable for load-bearing orthopedic applications. By employing design tactics such as thermoplastic layering, it is possible to reconcile competing demands, such as the mechanical strength and biological compatibility required for tissue structures. Consequently, this review summarizes the research efforts aimed at identifying appropriate thermoplastics, including polylactic acid (PLA), polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), polyurethane (PU), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), for the production of biomedical parts through 3D printing. It covers a range of produced items, including bones, high-quality prosthetics, intervertebral discs, medical devices, heart valves, and tissues containing blood vessels. Additionally, this review examines various 3D printing techniques, the challenges faced, and the future prospects for thermoplastic biomedical components.
Experimental Studies on Abrasive Water Jet Cutting of Nano SiC Particles Filled Hybrid Basalt-Glass Fibre-Reinforced Epoxy Composites S. Vijayabhaskar, T. Rajmohan, D. Vijayan, K. Palanikumar Journal of Research Updates in Polymer Science, 2023 Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) is extensively beneficial in machining materials that are hard to cut. This investigation deals with AWJM of Nano SiC filled Epoxy reinforced with basalt-glass fiber hybrid composite. The composite is prepared by compression moulding technique. Experimental trails are performed to evaluate the impact of every process parameter on the responses i.e., surface roughness (Ra) and Material Removal Rate (MRR). The experiments are conducted by changing the standoff distance (SD), traverse speed (TS) and water pressure. The performance of the conducted experiment is analysed using a Swarm intelligence algorithm. Surface roughness and MRR are maximized by using the combination of optimum process parameter levels of 9.72 mm/min speed, 5.78 mm stand-off distance and 553 MPa jet pressure. Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images are employed in detecting the morphology of machined surface and confirmed the presence of voids and fibre pull-out.
Sustainable Grinding Performances of Nano-Sic Reinforced Al Matrix Composites under MQL: An Integrated Box–Behnken Design Coupled with Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) Algorithm A. Nandakumar, T. Rajmohan, S. Vijayabhaskar, D. Vijayan Sustainable Chemistry, 2022 The presence of abrasive particles in ceramic reinforced composite materials makes the machining complicated by generating friction at elevated temperatures. Lubricants can be used to prohibit the hazard of higher temperatures. This research work is focused on examining the effects of lubricants on the grinding performances of Al matrix composites reinforced with nano-SiC particles under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). A cylindrical grinding machine is used to perform the grinding experiments by employing a Box–Behnken design. Multiple performances, such as surface roughness, grinding forces and temperature, are optimized by considering the depth of cut, speed of the workpiece, wheel speed and wt % of nano-SiC using response surface methodology (RSM)-based artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. Atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to observe the morphologies of the machined surfaces and the wheel.
Experimental Investigation on Wear Performance of MWCNT Filled Banana-glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites Rajmohan Thiagarajan, Palanikumar Kayaroganam, Mohan Kandasamy, Vijayabhaskar Sivasankaran Journal of Natural Fibers, 2022 As multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) filled polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers are ruling gradually increased applications, a considerable volume of investigation has focused on enhancing their wear and mechanical characteristics. This paper presents the wear behavior of the hybrid composites reinforced with banana-glass fiber. The epoxy resin diffused with MWCNT by ultrasonicator is considered as a matrix face for natural fiber-reinforced composites. The wear performances of the composites filled with MWCNT are measured using a pin-on-disc wear tester. Taguchi’s method in experimental design is considered with the control parameters such as sliding speed, load, temperature and wt.% of MWCNT. The worn surface is studied through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM).
