Heavy metal ion wastewater is extremely harmful to human health and the environment, while the adsorption materials used in traditional adsorption methods such as starch, are easily hydrolyzed, resulting in secondary water pollution. To address this issue, acrylic polymers were grafted onto magnetic starch (St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pAA, St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pHEMA, and St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pGMA) to enhance adsorption properties for Cu(II). Under optimal conditions (dosage of adsorbent was 0.3 mL, initial copper ion concentration of 20 mg/L, pH 7, and adsorption time of 160 min), St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pAA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 145 mg/g. St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pGMA maintained 95.7% of its initial adsorption capacity after eight cycles, demonstrating excellent stability and renewable performance. The adsorption properties of St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pHEMA showed minimal dependence on pH value. The non-dimensional constant separation factors (RL) for St/Fe 3 O 4 , St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pHEMA, St/Fe 3 O 4 -gAA, and St/Fe 3 O 4 -g-pGMA were 0.226, 0.210, 0.321, and 0.172, respectively, all falling within the range of 0 to 1, suggesting a favorable and easy adsorption process for Cu(II). Overall, the adsorption processes of all three modified magnetic starch materials followed the Langmuir isotherm model and were better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
  • Understanding and mitigating the causes and effects of oceanic dead zones
Sarvar Aliev, Ishimbaev Rafael Nailevich, Zaeid Ajsan Salami, Deepa Rajesh, Ashutosh Pandey
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Environmental Studies, 2025
Ocean dead zones—regions with critically low oxygen levels—adversely affect marine life, global ecosystems, and fisheries. Ocean dead zones derive from hypoxia caused by nutrient pollution, primarily from agricultural runoff combined with poorly regulated wastewater and industrial effluent discharges. Pollution promotes excessive algal blooms, and when these blooms die, decomposition leads to hypoxia. The massive dead zone caused by pollution in the Mississippi River's moat is the paradigm case. This paper focuses on the main impacts of eutrophication and the consequences of climate change on ocean circulation, along with their socio-economic impacts. Other socio-economic drivers are examined as case studies to substantiate the need for policy change. This research utilizes remote sensing to model dead zones, integrate a suite of biological monitoring methods, and design control measures to eliminate dead zones and mitigate eutrophication. Promising outcomes anticipate policy harmonization and techno-economic reengineering to combat the extreme proliferation of zones killed on ocean health and the marine economy.

    Disaster Advances, 2025
Accidents are a constant problem in numerous enterprises and they greatly affect workers and project results. This study aims to find out what caused these crashes, focusing on how worker-related, environmental and managerial factors all interact with each other. The goal is to find the main factors affecting Workplace Hazard Prevention (WHP) and make a model that can predict the future to lower risks. This study uses an ensemble machine learning (EML) approach to show Industrial Accident Analysis and Predictive Models for Workplace Hazard Prevention (IAA-PM-WHP). An analysis is conducted on a publicly accessible collection of 65,518 workplace injury reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), using four distinct ML models. This study suggested a way to build a model that takes into account three important factors: "type of damage," "kind of event," and "harmed organ." The EML model integrates predictions from four fundamental ML methodologies via soft voting. Among classic ML models, the RF method had the greatest accuracy (0.89), indicating robust overall prediction power. The EML method outperformed all models, attaining the greatest accuracy (0.92), precision (0.99), recall (0.899), F1-score (0.94) and AUC (0.92).

Proceedings Iceconf 2025 2025 2nd International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Discovery in Concurrent Engineering, 2025
In the current paper, a Graph Neural NetworksMapped Structural Health Monitoring System of Bridge Safety, a combination of high-level machine learning methods of detecting anomalies in bridge infrastructure in real time, is introduced. Preprocessing in the system uses Robust Principal Component Analysis as it guarantees efficient reduction of noise and processing of sensor readings. To ensure efficient selection of features, the Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance method is used to ensure that the most relevant ones are selected, which improves the efficiency of the model. The spatial and temporal relationship between sensors is then modelled using a Graph Neural Network classifier that allows the detection of possible structural problems effectively. PyTorch and PyTorch Geometric are used to implement the system, which results in scalable performance. The suggested solution is very accurate in detecting anomalies and false positives and false negatives are greatly reduced, which is why this specific solution can be used as a valid solution to proactive bridge maintenance. Its outcomes indicate that it can advance the safety and durability of infrastructures.

Proceedings of 2025 International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Pioneering Innovations in Robotics and Electric Mobility Transforming Mobility and Automation Through Intelligent Engineering Inspire 2025, 2025
Reliable power supply in emergency shelters after disasters remains a critical challenge due to infrastructure failure, unpredictable demand, and limited backup capacity. This study introduces a novel IoT-driven adaptive microgrid framework that integrates renewable energy, energy storage, and diesel backup governed by an intelligent Adaptive Load Optimization (ALO) algorithm. The innovation lies in the dynamic IoT-based control and prioritization of critical loads through edge-level decision intelligence, ensuring continuous energy delivery even under low-resource conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed system achieves 91% power availability, reduces generator runtime by over 60%, and enhances resilience to 98%, compared to conventional microgrids. This work bridges the research gap in real-time, IoT-enabled energy resilience for shelters, offering a scalable model for sustainable disaster response. An Adaptive Load Optimization (ALO) algorithm effectively varies the energy share according to the power availability, as well as based on weather forecasts, to provision the primary needs first. The communication layer of the system, which uses MQTT and LoRa, guarantees the reliable data transfer even in remote locations. Based on the simulation result, the proposed microgrid can balance out the energy loads and minimize the reliance on diesel backup while providing a continuous energy supply with minimal downtime. Through combining renewable sources of energy with IoT and adaptive algorithms, the system makes emergency shelters more resilient and provides sustainable and reliable power supplies in times of disaster.

Journal of Water Management Modeling, 2025
Evaluation of future temperature and precipitation is essential for managing water supplies, reducing the impact of natural disasters, and expanding agricultural opportunities. In the present study, recently released Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and CMIP5 were analyzed concerning the Mahanadi Reservoir Project (MRP), Complex, Chhattisgarh. The Statistical Downscaling Model (SDSM) projected climatic variables of shared socioeconomic pathways and representative concentration pathways (SSPs-RCPs) such as SSPs 245, SSPs 585, and RCP 4.5, and RCP 8.5, respectively, for two different timescales (2023–2060, 2061–2099). In recognition of subsequent timescales, the chosen GCM CCCmaCanESM2 was found to be the most efficient among CMIP5, whereas MPI-ESM1-2-HR was used for CMIP6. Higher temperatures and less precipitation are predicted in high-emission scenarios (SSP5-8.5 and RCPs 8.5) compared to mid-emission scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and RCPs 4.5). Therefore, the findings of this study could be utilized to forecast the hydrological cycle and analyze the sustainability of the environment. Furthermore, this study will be relevant for future water resource management and adaptation efforts.

    Civil Engineering and Architecture, 2024
Utilizing sulphur in concrete mixes stands out as an exemplary approach to mitigating environmental impacts. This method capitalizes on sulphur as a waste product from industrial operations, addressing waste disposal concerns and promoting environmental preservation. Sulphur concrete exhibits notable qualities, possessing heightened compressive strength, low hydraulic conductivity, and outstanding resistance to water permeation. It proves highly resilient to corrosion, particularly in acidic and saline conditions. Moreover, sulphur concrete boasts enhanced resistance to corrosion, augmenting its durability. When repeatedly loaded, its waterproofing properties prevent it from wearing out, accelerating the hardening process and enhancing its strength. This makes manufacturing more efficient and ensures durability in harsh environments. The objective of the study is to examine the effect of sulphur-coated aggregate concrete on compressive strength, sulphate resistance, and nitrate resistance. The study also aimed to compare the test results of conventional concrete with sulphur-coated aggregate concrete and to investigate the hardened properties of both normal concrete and sulphur-coated aggregate concrete across various cement percentages, including 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. Examining the compressive strength of concrete using different proportions of sulphur-coated aggregate consistently shows a decline in strength as the sulphur content rises to 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. However, the compressive strength fails to reach the target mean strength, unlike normal concrete. As the sulphur percentage increases, the concrete demonstrates improved performance against these ions. Following exposure to sulphate and nitrate attacks, concrete experiences a substantial reduction in strength, while sulphur-coated aggregate concrete maintains higher strength levels. Notably, the strength of concrete with a 10% sulphur content increases by up to 11.30%. Therefore, the findings indicate that sulphur concrete is suitable for applications in environments with high moisture levels and increased acid exposure. In terms of strength, sulphur concrete shows comparable performance to conventional concrete.
  • Flood Hazard: A QGIS Plugin for Assessing Flood Consequences

Journal of Water Management Modeling, 2024
Flash floods cause substantial harm to the social and economic aspects of the affected countries. This is a significant problem in urban areas where drainage systems are inadequate and unable to withstand severe flooding. Understanding the specific regions that are susceptible to flooding is essential to implement strategies aimed at mitigating the risk. Detecting floods in ungauged basins is challenging. The current work aims to establish a practical method for identifying and mapping floodplain areas. We can use several tools, including the FLO-2D integration tool, Flood Risk tool, Geomorphic Flood Area plugin, and Quantum Geographical Information System (QGIS) with Hydrologic Engineering Centre River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) to efficiently and cost-effectively detect flood hazard zones. The QGIS tool, the Geomorphic Flood Index (GFI), is the most valuable tool for identifying flood-prone areas in cases where the areas are extensive and lack sufficient data. This tool offers high data analysis and cost calculation precision while using few resources.
