Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are an enormous threat, mainly because of the extension they can reach, the ease of deployment, the losses that it can cause, and the effort it can take to detect and stop this type of attack. Machine learning techniques have been and are widely used to prevent DDoS attacks. As a matter of fact, many gigantic intrusion detection systems (IDS) have been proudly utilising machine learning techniques to help the conventional signature detection system by adding another layer of “intelligent” thinking. This chapter provides a context of the techniques used for detecting DDoS attacks using machine learning, and in demonstrating why the merge of these concepts have huge potential for the defence of a given system. To that matter, some studies that use machine learning approaches for DDoS detection are analysed. Finally, this chapter provides a high-level view of the types of DDoS attacks that are considered a threat, the machine learning approaches to detect these attacks, and why these approaches are cohesive.

The 21st century accentuated the globalization, regardless of some cases apparently returning to the previous regionalization paradigm. In both cases, human communication has been and will be key to overcome the major challenges ahead. Within the global context, communication is increasingly cross-cultural, which brings additional challenges related to misunderstandings and the potential to escalate conflicts, sometimes ending up at crises. Therefore, communication and negotiation across cultures has never been as relevant as now, and the purpose of this chapter is to provides a fundamental knowledge base to cross-cultural negotiation, taking into account the main culture models from the last 50 years. It will be based on several relevant culture models, taken from multiple lines of research from reference authors in the field of culture models, negotiation, leadership, and decision making.

In critical activities and organizations, decision making in the face of complexity has been a growing normal. Complexity troubles humans due to cognitive limitations. Moreover, humans are merely able to understand cause-and-effect relationships that are close in time and space, not the paradigm of many complex socio-technical systems. Decision-making processes shall rely on models that help harness a problem´s associated complexity – among them the dynamics of supply chains. Models typically fall into two broad categories: mental and formal models. Supply chains are complex systems, which may exhibit complex behaviour patterns. Decisions and policies within organizational systems are the causes of many problems, among them undesirable oscillations and other problematic patterns of the parameters of interest. A system is a grouping of parts that work together for a purpose. Hence, the systems dynamics methodology is an adequate approach to deal with fuel supply chain management. A model was developed that helps manage marine gasoil supply chains in the context of the navy.

Coastal areas enable the development of economic activities, such as fishing and tourism. The occurrence of maritime incidents can, however, jeopardize these activities. Water pollution, accidents with vessels or falling cliffs are some of these incidents. A proactive surveillance and monitoring of threats by maritime authorities is important. This text proposes a system, installed in a UAV, based on machine learning, and aiming to detect, identify and classify maritime incidents in coastal areas in real time, contributing to a more effective coastal surveillance.

A technology that has been used for applications in education and training domains is the Virtual Reality (VR). VR can be used to create simulated three-dimensional scenarios, promoting interactions between the environment and the user, which allows to experience virtual training situations very close to real actions. The aim of this work was to create a teaching and training tool using VR technology for rescue actions in the aquatic environment. For this purpose, the requirements of real procedures were collected in order to transpose them to a synthetic environment. After the artifact construction it was tested and evaluated by users and the results seem promising.

In search for better competitiveness, organizations need to identify business processes that improve resource efficiency. To do so, it is necessary to apply methods to evaluate the use of resources used. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of the maintenance management of transportation vehicles in an organization by using the Data Envelopment Analysis method. In order to obtain lower maintenance costs, the results suggest the modernization of the fleet and the improvement of the internal capacity of maintenance or, alternatively, the option for leasing contracts.

The Public Administration (PA) activity, as in other sectors of the economy, has been facing the impacts of the exponential growth of data, which need to be processed in order to obtain information and knowledge for effective and efficient decision making in the management of public resources, particularly the financial ones. This work reports the design and development of a Business Intelligence (BI) solution for the collection and processing of information in the context of budget and financial management, in order to improve the efficiency of budget and financial management in public administration.
