AbstractWelding dissimilar metals by resistance spot welding offers several advantages, including lighter weight and better mechanical properties for the shipping, aerospace, and automotive industries. The resistance spot welding parameters effects (welding current, squeeze time, welding time, and hold time) on the welding results of AISI 1005 and AISI 304L were investigated in the present research. The joints' tensile shear force, microhardness, and microstructure were examined. The Taguchi design of experiments approach was utilized to analyze the tensile shear force results statistically. A welding current of 7 kA, welding time of 1.4 s, squeeze time of 1.2 s, and hold time of 0.8 s resulted in an optimum tensile shear force of 6.194 kN. Additionally, the nugget zone demonstrated a higher hardness compared to the base metal and heat-affected zones.

PROCESS PARAMETERS INFLUENCE THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND NUGGET DIAMETER OF AISI 316 STAINLESS STEEL DURING RESISTANCE SPOT WELDING

Resistance spot welding (RSW) is an important fusion welding process used in many applications, including storage tanks, pipes, and medical tools. For this, should be improved the joints and developing the process parameters and through this research will be discussed the results and concept development. Herein, 1 mm-thick AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel was welded by RSW, and the effect of the welding process parameters, such as “welding current, pulses, squeeze time, and welding time”, on the mechanical properties, nugget diameter (ND), and microstructure of AISI 316 were investigated. As a result, there was a direct relationship between shear-tensile force and ND. The maximum shear-tensile force (12.5 kN) was obtained using 7500 A, 3 pulses, 1.8 s squeeze time, and 1 s welding time. The ND was maximized using 7500 A, 3 pulses, 1.6 s squeeze time, and 0.8 s welding time. The DOE analysis gives an indication about the relation between the parameters and ND on the hand and the parameters and shear strength on the other hand. The microstructure was investigated by optical microscopy, revealing the presence of martensitic, widmanstatten austenite, and ferrite structures.

Abstract This work aims to join sheets of carbon steel to aluminum alloy AA6061. A lap joint arrangement was used with a joint lap area of dimensions * 25 25 mm. The joining procedure was carried out using a rotating tool of 10 mm shoulder diameter. Three process parameters, with three levels for each parameter, were selected to investigate their effects on joints quality. The parameter’s levels for each experiment were designed using the design of the experiment method (DOE). The results indicated that the two materials were joined by a mechanical interlock at an interface line, without formation of intermetallic compounds. The shear force of the joint reached an ultimate value of. 482kN. The shear force of the joint improved by increasing plunging depth of the tool. Samples of minimum shear force value failed by a pull-outing aluminum metal from the carbon steel specimen. Samples of higher shear force value exhibited a shear mode of fracture. Increasing the rotating speed and decreasing pre-heating increased the process temperature.

Influence of Welding Parameters of Resistance Spot Welding on Joining Aluminum with Copper

Abstract The resistance spot welding (RSW) method was used to join aluminum alloy AA 1050 and copper alloy UNS C50100 sheets. Mechanical properties of the joints were examined. The influence of welding process parameters on tensile shear force of the joints was discussed. The design of experiments (DOE) method was used to analyze the influence of welding parameters on the mechanical properties of the joints. Three RSW parameters were used: welding current, squeeze time, and welding time. The results showed that the joint shear stress increased with increasing the welding current until a value of 12000 Amp. Then the shear stress decreased. The tensile shear stress increased with increasing the welding and squeeze time. As a consequence, it can be possible to weld copper with aluminum by RSW.
