  • A Study on Machine Learning and Blockchain-Based Techniques for Transparent VNF Testing for 5G and B5G Networks
    Panchanan Nath, Purnendu Shekhar Pandey
Blockchain Technology for Cyber Defense Cybersecurity and Countermeasures Techniques Solutions and Applications, 2025
This research work presents a study on the application of machine learning (ML) and blockchain-based techniques for transparent testing of virtual network function (VNF) in 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) network environment. The security and transparency of VNF while testing it are critical aspects in the rapidly evolving 5G and beyond network scenario. The traditional testing techniques often lack transparency and are often found ineffective in addressing materializing security challenges. Therefore, this study focuses on the state-of-the-art approach that utilizes ML algorithms and blockchain technology to enhance VNF testing. This chapter highlights the benefits of ML techniques to analyze VNF performance, detect anomalies, and identify potential security vulnerabilities. Furthermore, integrating blockchain technology ensures transparency and accountability in the testing process, allowing stakeholders to validate and trust the test results. The integration of ML and blockchain-based techniques enables real-time monitoring, analysis, and validation of VNF performance and security issues. This approach facilitates the efficient sharing of data among different entities, fostering collaboration and enabling comprehensive security assessments. This research contributes to possible challenges such as standardization efforts, trust and transparency management, and trade-offs of the testing process of VNF. Further, we highlight the future research directions and conclude the work.

Intelligent Spectrum Management Towards 6g, 2024
Blockchain, a prominent distributed ledger technology (DLT), is poised to drive the evolution of next-generation mobile networks. Recent research has increasingly focused on the versatile applications of blockchain technology and smart contracts within the 6G ecosystem. Beyond merely underpinning the technical core of 6G networks, blockchain holds the potential to empower unprecedented applications associated with 6G, including Digital Twins, Industry 5.0, Holographic Telepresence, and Extended Reality (XR). Leveraging its key attributes—security, decentralization, transparency, nonrepudiation, cost-efficiency, and high availability—blockchain can facilitate essential technical aspects of 6G, such as security and privacy compliance, trustless trading, federated slice brokering, and the coexistence of local private networks and mobile network operators. Spectrum, a finite and valuable resource, necessitates optimal and transparent utilization. Notably, efficient spectrum management, vital for fostering an open ecosystem, can be significantly bolstered by harnessing blockchain technology. In this chapter, we explore how blockchain and smart contracts have been utilized and can be further leveraged to ensure secure, transparent, trusted, fair, and efficient spectrum management in the context of B5G and 6G networks.
  • AI and Blockchain-based source code vulnerability detection and prevention system for multiparty software development

    Computers and Electrical Engineering, 2023
With the growing demand for application software , there is a race among industries to develop software as quickly as possible. However, maintaining pace and ensuring bug-free software has become increasingly challenging in a work-from-home arrangement as software developers are not under constant supervision. It increases the possibility of buggy products, and traditional testing techniques fail to provide optimal performance . We propose an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain-based novel decentralized software testing system. The proposed system aims to detect and prevent vulnerable code by synergizing deep learning capabilities and smart-contract-powered blockchain . The vulnerability detection is performed automatically without relying on manually written rules. We propose a non-vulnerability score range map to classify the source code . Furthermore, we integrate an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) to ensure efficient storage over the blockchain . We conduct a testbed-based experiment to demonstrate the effectiveness of AI and blockchain integration for secure code development and testing.
  • A Study on Secure Network Slicing in 5G
Pranav Kumar Singh, Maharaj Brahma, Panchanan Nath, Uttam Ghosh
Proceedings 23rd IEEE ACM International Symposium on Cluster Cloud and Internet Computing Workshops Ccgridw 2023, 2023
5G and Beyond 5G(B5G) networks are expected to support a wide range of business and industry verticals with diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements, such as autonomous vehicles, industrial IoT, smart city, smart agriculture, smart grid, etc. It is crucial to partition the physical network into multiple distinct logical networks using network slicing to meet these diverse requirements. While network slicing provides significant advantages for 5G, it also introduces new security concerns that must be addressed. This article aims to highlight security requirements, threat vectors, attack vectors, and associated security challenges that need to be addressed to fully leverage the potential of network slicing in 5G and B5G. Finally, we conclude this work by outlining the future research directions that can lead the way in securing network slicing for 5G and B5G.
  • VNFTestChain: Blockchain Based Test Framework for Trusted VNF Services in 5G and B5G
Panchanan Nath, Pranav Kumar Singh, Anshuman Kalla, Maharaj Brahma
2023 15th International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks Comsnets 2023, 2023
This paper proposes a blockchain-based test frame-work for trusted Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) for 5G and B5G networks. In particular, the proposed framework comprises two types of blockchain viz., consortium and public and five different entities viz., developer, tester, reviewer, verifier, and badging authority. The consortium blockchain forms the first level, where initially, the digital fingerprints of the developed VNF and other relevant information are pushed by the five entities. Once a VNF successfully passes all the tests and verification, the required information of VNF life cycle are pushed from the consortium blockchain to the public blockchain, which is the second -level blockchain open to anyone. To ensure a scalable solution, we use distributed off-chain storage. Moreover, the use of smart contracts provides transparent functionality, code immutability, access control, and automation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first test framework that proposes a combination of consortium blockchain, public blockchain, smart contracts, and distributed off-chain storage to address the security and trust issues in the existing centralized VNF life cycle.
